There are ways to unlock some secret characters through button codes:

  1. Start the game
  2. Press anything to go past the loading screen
  3. Enter the button combination in the main menu
    Keyboard arrows or Controller D-pad works
  4. Click Equip Now
    I have had issues that the unlocked character disappears unless I equip it directly.

The Konami-Code is quite commonly a secret code in various video games.
