Walkthrough
You can do all this with notepad. In notepad, press ctrl + f to quickly find these settings.
  1. Go to C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Arrowhead\Helldivers2
  2. Open user_settings.config
  3. Set particles_cast_shadows to false (it is already disabled for some machines).
  4. Set particles_receive_shadows to false
  5. Set particles_local_lighting to false
  6. Set particles_tesselation to false
Next
  1. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Helldivers 2\data
  2. Open settings.ini
  3. Change memory_size = 26214400 to 78643200
  4. Change num_refills_in_voice = 2 to 4
then you're done! Me and others who have tried it have noticed no visual downgrade.
I'll add the nerd ♥♥♥♥ details later if I'm not lazy
p.s. what the hell is with all that preamble that these guides have? this isn't ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ google, there's no SEO. anyways happy diving.

OMG thank you!!! I have not been able to play for weeks before doing this. 15min into a game i would have audio bugs and lag and then eventually crashing. unplayable before trying this (both steps). thank you!!! (4070 GPU)

On linux you can find the appdata directory inside your SteamLibrary like this: SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/553850/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Roaming/Arrowhead/Helldivers2/
If you don't know where your steam library is, on the game page in your library you can go to Manage/Browse Local Files and go up two directories.

For the first one, you can shortcut most of the location by typing in:
%appdata%\Arrowhead\Helldivers2

That address will work on all Windows computers, regardless of your Windows login username.

For the second location, not everyone installs Steam there so the most reliable way that should work for everyone is:
Right-click your Steam entry for Helldivers 2, go to Properties > Installed Files > Browse and then the Data folder.

it's particles_tessellation (double l). What's the memory_size setting? A bit afraid to increase it on a laptop

SAVE YOUR ORIGINAL USER CONFIG FILE SOMEWHERE BEFORE EDITING THE ORIGINAL.

JUST SAVE IT IN YOUR DOCUMENTS FOLDER OR WHATEVER AS A BACKUP.

That is all.

Thank you so much! I can actually play on bots without the game dying

Clear instructions, nice. Stuff the devs aren't doing, nice.
Now, fix the random sample drops + respawn. Not "dying", but when the game decides it's time for the player to respawn my helldiver drops samples, falls on the ground, and then I'm respawning; player input means nothing, the on-screen character just dies regardless of how avoided it is.
