Beginners’ guide to The Bazaar

This is my guide to the Bazaar. Some of the tips may seem super-obvious, but it’s often hard to keep track of everything, so I’ve included them anyway.

Keywords and Heroes
Note: You will find more information on individual items and their Enchantment effects in the most popular databases for The Bazaar - Bazaar DB[bazaardb.gg] and How Bazaar[howbazaar.gg]]. The former is slightly more comprehensive, but the latter is easier to use.

Note 2: This chapter was supposed to be the last in this guide, but as I was working on it, it dawned on me that it can actually be used to help choose what heroes to play, especially when more get added as paid DLCs.

- Ammo - Does damage in “shots”, which are limited. This means that Ammo items need a way to reload, and/or increase the number of “shots” available to them, in order to be effective.
Used by: All heroes, but Vanessa’s firearms and Mak’s potions are the most numerous. Both Vanessa and Mak have items that can reload Ammo.

- Burn - Does damage over time, starting at a rate of double the indicated number per “tick” and gradually decreasing by 1 per “tick”. Shield decreases Burn damage by 50%
Used by: All heroes.

- Charge - Immediately advance an item’s cooldown by the number of seconds indicated.
Used by: All heroes, but particularly Dooley and Stelle.

- Crit Chance - A % chance to double the effect of the item. Works for all buffs, debuffs and damage types.
Used by: Mainly Vanessa, Dooley and Mak.

- Destroy - Make an item disappear for the duration of the fight.

- Enchant - Add an extra keyword to the item. Only one enchant can be active on a single item!
Used by: All heroes. Mak is the only one who can apply enchants, using Reagents and Catalysts. All other heroes need to wait for special events.

- Flying - Flying decreases Freeze and Slow effects on the item by 50%.
Used by: Stelle and Dooley, almost exclusively.

- Freeze - Pause an item’s cooldown by the number of seconds indicated.
Used by: All heroes except Stelle.

- Haste - Make an item’s cooldown advance twice as fast for the number of seconds indicated.
Used by: All heroes.

- Heal - Regain health, almost instantly.
Used by: Pygmalien has the most Heal items, followed by Mak, then Vanessa and Stelle. Dooley has only a couple.

- Lifesteal - Gain health equal to the amount of damage dealt to opponent. Their Shield, if present, gets reduced first, followed by the main health bar.
Used by: Almost exclusive to Mak.

- Poison - Does damage over time, at a rate of 1 per “tick”. Unlike Burn, Poison doesn’t decrease over time and ignores Shield.
Used by: Mak has the most Poison items, including some with both Poison and Regen effects. Vanessa has quite a few as well. Dooley has only a couple. Pygmalien and Stelle have none.

- Potion - A (normally) single-use Ammo item, exclusive to Mak.

- Property - A (usually large) non-weapon item with beneficial effects.
Used by: All heroes. Pygmalien has the most, followed by Vanessa, with other heroes having only a couple each.

- Reagent - An item that can be transformed into another, keeping the keyword where possible. Exclusive to Mak.

- Regen - Regain health over time. A direct counter to Poison.
Used by: Mak has the most Regen items, including some with both Poison and Regen effects. He is closely followed by Pygmalien. Stelle has only a couple. Vanessa and Dooley have none.

- Slow - Make an item’s cooldown advance half as fast for the number of seconds indicated.
Used by: All heroes.

- Shield - A transparent extra health bar on top of the main one. Only works until the main health bar is depleted.
Used by: All heroes except Mak.

- Transform - Change an item to a different one, of the same size and rarity.
Used by: All heroes. Mak is the only one who can transform, using Reagents and Catalysts. All other heroes need to wait for special events.

- Value - Some items increase in power as they get more expensive. The ways to increase value vary from item to item.
Used by: Pygmalien, almost exclusively.
General Gameplay Tips
1. Your run is divided into “days”. Every day has 6 “hours”. At the end of each hour, you pick an action, from a choice of 3. When you complete an action, you earn 1 XP, unless otherwise stated, with 8 XP needed to level up. When you level up, you choose a skill or an upgrade for one of your items, depending on what “day” of the run it is.

2. The third “hour” of each day gives you a choice of 3 monster fights. You gain XP and gold even if you lose the fight. How much you get is based on how strong the monster is, compared to you, and the amount of damage you’ve dealt - between 1 and 4 XP. If you win, you will also get either a unique skill or an item. These are chosen at random, out of the skills and items the monster has.

3. Bronze monsters are the same level as you, so are an almost guaranteed win; Silver are a level above, also usually an easy win; Gold, two levels above, are a challenge. Diamond or Infernal monsters are impossible to defeat unless your build uses a particularly high-damage combo!

4. Bazaar DB[bazaardb.gg] is an excellent database on many things related to The Bazaar. Its Monster section is particularly helpful, detailing the items and skills each one has, as well as what days they appear on.

5. The final, 6th, “hour” of each day is a PvP fight. To win a run, you need to score 10 PvP wins before you have 7 losses (6 + 1 “last chance” loss). If you lose a PvP fight, your Prestige meter gets depleted. The Prestige cost of a defeat is equal to the number of the day when it happens. You start with 20 Prestige in total. Depending on how long it takes for the meter to deplete, the length of your run can vary from 10 (perfect run) to 15 “days”.

6. On days 1, 2, 4 and 5, you get to choose between 3 options. The left one is a store, the middle one is an event, and the right one is a free gift.

7. One of the free gifts, “Relax”, gives you armour for your next fight. Only pick this on day 4 or 5 - it’s too powerful to waste on a monster fight!
General Strategy Tips
In terms of strategy, it can be helpful to think of your run as having 4 stages:

Days 1-3 are the beginning. Your rug is not yet fully unfurled. You buy as many items as possible, to pick a strategy based on what you get.

1. You will notice that the majority of items in the game have keywords (detailed in the first chapter of this guide), provide bonuses depending on their position or scale their damage output. However, a few of the items don’t have any special abilities. Avoid buying those, unless you have no choice - special abilities win matches!

Days 4-6 are the mid-game. Your rug is now fully unfurled, your strategy chosen.

2. Pick one weapon to be your main win condition. It would be medium or large. Concentrate on making it as effective as possible - improving it, hasting it, picking the skills that affect it. Use a couple other weapons to help you while your main one is on cooldown.

3. Weapons that scale with every attack are often the most effective. For those that don't have scaling "built-in", you can add items which provide it to your build.

4. Single-weapon builds are possible, if you are experienced and/or confident. There are some items that enhance those.

Days 7-9 are the endgame. Your build is ready, you are mostly looking for upgrades and high-level large items to make it even more efficient. You are also stocking up on gold to buy them.

5. The difference between Gold and Diamond items is not that big. So don't sell part of your build to upgrade a Gold item!

Days 10+ Win, hopefully. The strategy is the same as on days 7-9. There are special events, merchants and Diamond-tier skills that only appear on day 10 and beyond.
Item Tips
1. You can see your stash at the bottom-left corner of the screen. Above it is an indicator strip, showing you which slots are filled. Both the stash and your rug have 10 slots in total. Make sure you have enough space in your stash before buying chocolate bars and gumballs and don’t forget to sell them before you fight anyone!

2. Small items fill 1 slot. They are the least powerful and the cheapest. Medium items fill 2 slots. Large items fill 3 slots. They are the most powerful and expensive. They are also often quite slow.

3. Some items require you to sell/buy other items, or to perform a certain number of specific actions, in order to be upgraded. This can be done with the item stashed. Also, you don't have to Buy the items, just obtain them!

4. To upgrade an item, you need to combine two of the same tier - so a Bronze Katana would not combine with a Silver one.

5. Some items produce a small item once a day, even when stashed. The item will be of the same tier as the one which produced it. However, it would never combine into an upgrade!

6. In rare cases, it’s best to not upgrade an item at all - when it doesn’t fit your build or you ahare only keeping it for a specific bonus.

7. Some Neutral items improve the ones with certain keywords (such as “Shield”) when sold. The improvement is for both stashed and active items, unless otherwise stated.

8. If one item is reliant on another to activate, most commonly seen with Haste or Ammo items, pay extra attention to cooldowns. Generally, a cooldown of 5 seconds or less is short; one of 8+ seconds is long - Haste or Charge the item in some way for it to be effective.

9. Mouse over an item description to see the items it will affect highlighted with a glowing blue border. This is vital for taking advantage of positioning/adjacency bonuses given by items and skills!

10. Some items and skills have number-related bonuses: “If you have less than 5 items...”, “If you have more than 7 items...”, “If this is your only...”. This type of bonus counts only the items on the rug, not in the stash!
Merchant Tips
1. You don’t need to be at a merchant to sell items!

2. Just like items, merchants come in 4 tiers. You can see what tier they are by their portrait frame.

3. Bronze merchants can appear from day 1. Their shop reroll cost is 2 gold. They offer the largest selection of items, meaning it can be harder to find any specific one.

4. Silver ones can appear from day 3. Their shop reroll cost is 4 gold. They offer a large selection of items, meaning it can be harder to find any specific one.

5. Some Silver merchants only appear for a specific hero, offering only the items in a specific category unique to that hero, meaning it’s easier to find a useful one. They can appear from day 1.

6. One of the Silver merchants, Curio, offers Neutral (non-hero-specific) items. Their synergies are usually weaker, but many of them offer bonuses when sold! He can also appear from day 1.

7. Some Silver merchants pay you extra for selling certain items to them. Valpak likes Bronze-tier items; Barkun - small ones; Midsworth - medium; Quixel - large.

8. Gold merchants can appear from day 7. Their shop reroll cost is 6 gold. They offer items in categories that are either very specific, or very powerful.

9. Diamond merchants can appear from day 9. Their shop reroll cost is 8 gold. They offer items in categories that are either very specific or very powerful.

10. Any merchant can offer items of any rarity, with rarer items becoming more likely as the days go by. Silver items start appearing on day 2; Gold on day 7; Diamond on day 10.

11. Bazaar DB[bazaardb.gg] has a Merchant section that tells you about their reroll costs and item types at a glance. However, I feel that How Bazaar[howbazaar.gg] is better laid out if you wish to see a merchant’s entire range of possible offerings.
Event Tips.
The following information was taken from Bazaar DB[bazaardb.gg]. I have provided these tips for the cases where it’s easy to make the wrong choice until your remember what the options are.

1. Vanessa can earn XP at the Docks before day 9 if she has a Star Chart or an Astrolabe. Many players keep one of these items, unupgraded, in their inventory for that purpose. All other heroes have to wait until later in the run for the option to be given free XP.

2. A Strange Mushroom, and later, The Shrouded Figure, offer an option to get free gold.

3. A Small Furry Creature can give you a free skill, from a choice of 2, if you have a food, a friend or a toy. The other two options, available even if you don’t have these items, are also good, but getting a skill has a much bigger impact.

4. Eating Contest, Gumball Machine, Likit, The Shrouded Figure and Artisan Dunes have at least some options that make you spend money. Merchants who improve your items also charge a fee. So avoid visiting those if you are penniless.

5. The Aerodrome can take you to a store of your choosing. The rerolls are unlimited, but cost progressively more coin. If you have 20 coin to spare, you can also go on an Expedition. However, you can get a ticket to it for free as a drop from some monsters.

6. The expedition will appear on Day 9 as a separate event if you've got the ticket. It's got a trap fights, then a loot room, followed by a boss fight and a final reward. You get 3 choices for the fights and the reward, but you can only pick one. All rewards are unique and powerful.

7. Pearl’s Dig Site gives you a free item of your choice. Rerolls cost progressively more coin, but they are infinite, so you will get something good out of it, even if it's just an expensive item to sell!

That's all, folks! Have fun!

Sorry, typo. I have now edited it to say "All heroes except Mak". Thanks for the correction!

Stelle does have quite a few shield items.
