how to heal all types of wounds (explained)
由 Yours truly. 制作
in this guide i will show you how to treat all types of wounds, on the vanilla game that is.
and i mean, the real deal. not ai generated like the OTHER one.
this won't be a nerdfest i promise, i'll keep the numbers at minimum,
(results and/or survival not guaranteed.)

FIRST OFF, WHAT IS FIRST AID?
as the name implies, its the skill used to treat wounds and all that
but on the vanilla game is pretty underpowered. since it doesn't change the healing speed, only the bandage durability and speed of any action that involves this skill.
you can press the "H" key to access your ingame health tab or right click another survivor to see theirs

basic knowledge:

1- A WOUND WILL NOT HEAL IF UNTREATED.
you'll need to bandage it first, limited to:

  • bandages (the best one, longer durability)

  • ripped sheets

  • denim stripes

  • leather stripes

  • adhesive bandages (the worst one, shortest durability)

right click on the wound, select "bandage" and select which one.

PS: compared to ripped sheets, denim and leather stripes need scissors to be obtained by ripping clothing with said materials with them. these 3 have the same durability if used as bandages

remember that if a bandage is dirty, it doesn't change the speed of healing, only the chance of infection. which we'll talk below. they can be washed with normal water from sinks, sea water or water containers in your inventory

2- infections... errrrr
there are two types of infections
  • the normal infection (bacterial)
  • the knox infection (the zombie virus)

-the normal infection-
the normal infection (i'll just call it infection from now on) will be shown on your health tab.
straight off. the ingame infection is pretty flaccid compared to its real life counter part.
it only causes pain, it doesn't reduce health nor slow healing speed (at the time of writing this guide, that is.)

you can brush it off by using
  • bottle of disinfectant
  • bourbon (yes, the game lets you do this.)
  • cotton balls doused in alcohol
  • alcohol wipes
  • antibiotics

-the knox infection-
ok this one is kinda tricky, not really, the symptoms are noticeable.
it causes:
  • overheating
  • sickness
  • constant gain of stress (separate from character traits)
  • fast loss of health.

-the symptoms can appear in the same day or 1 day after.
-you have 3 days to live before succumbing to the infection for real.
-this infection won't be displayed in the health panel.
-not curable without mods

TREAT COMMON DAMAGE:

SCRATCHES / LACERATIONS
it is simple really, just apply a bandage to the 2, there is not really much difference between the 2 in the vanilla game
skip the "adding water to the wound" step from the other guide since it doesn't work like that ingame
its not necessary to add alcohol wipes to the wound unless its infected.

remember if both scratches and lacerations were caused by a zombie
you'll have chance for the knox infection.
  • scratches have a 7% of knox infection
  • lacerations have a 25% of knox infection

(the laceration should be more lethal to match the real life counter part but whatever)
BITES.
im gonna be real with you,

if a zombie bites you, you're cooked. since bites have 100% of knox infection risk

so you better kiss your game save and character build goodbye unless you have a mod to reverse the knox infection.

so don't even bother bandaging it.

ok negativism over.

just apply a bandage to it, and do it fast since bites have fast bleeding speed.
TREAT ADVANCED DAMAGE:

DEEP WOUNDS
now this is starting to get tuff.

for this one you'll need
  • suture needle
  • or a normal needle with thread
  • forceps (suture needle holder) (optional)

do right click on the deep wound and press suture

you can use a normal needle but the pain will be higher, forceps will do the procedure faster and with lower pain
GUNS N' BULLETS
(well. only bullets ...and lodged glass apparently)

During combat with other survivors (either multiplayer or with the bandits mod)
most guaranteed that they'll have a firearm, and you'll get shot.

yes, you CAN survive a bullet. you just need to bandage it and worry about the bullet later.
but not THAT later since your character is still bleeding regardless if it is bandaged or not.
just find a safe place to remove the lodged materials. otherwise it won't heal.

you can remove the lodged materials either with
  • bare hands (slower)
  • tweezers
  • forceps (suture needle holder)

moving on
SKIN BURNS
probably the worst of all compared to the above.
you can get these from being lit on fire or surviving a bomb thrown at you

burns cause severe health loss and pain, and they take a ♥♥♥♥ ton of time to heal.
to treat them, you'll first have to clean the burn with a clean bandage, this will cause high pain so
i recommend to take pain killers before doing the procedure. then you bandage it.
you'll have to do this from time to time.
FRACTURES
this one is the most lethal one.

if the fracture is on the legs it will slow you down, (no ♥♥♥♥)
if the fracture is on the arms it will make you attack slower
if the fracture is on the torso it reduces your endurance capacity
if the fracture is on the head you'll become drowsy faster

for this you'll have to craft a splint with:

  • ripped sheets
  • either a three branch, sturdy stick, or a plank

you cant put splints on the torso and head.

but if you maintain yourself hydrated and fed you'll recover

data that i forgot:

thx for the comment.

A note on fractures: Fractures can heal significantly faster if you apply a comfrey poultice.

Comfrey can be found using foraging, mostly in Deep Woods areas. Chances are low unless you have the herbalist trait or have read the Wilderness Survival magazine. You'll need 5 comfrey and a mortar and pestle to craft the poultice. Assuming you've already fractured yourself, you can remove the bandage, apply the poultice, and bandage it back up.

The other poultices are helpful as well (plantain for wounds, garlic for infections) but as those injuries are generally not as long lasting or impactful, I generally don't bother using them.

@MeiaDúzia yes, since the game doesn't take into account the infection when it comes to healing the wound in the vanilla game
MeiaDúzia 9 月 23 日 下午 3:00
So the wound will heal if it is treated even if it is infected?

I found drinking bleach to be quite an effective way to deal with bites
