TL;DR
Benefits:
  • Fixes control issues.
  • Compatible with existing saves.
  • Re-bindable controls with controller support.
  • Better video options.
  • Native speedup support (good for skipping through parts you've already seen).

Caveats:
  • Change the default video scaling method to integer instead of bilinear to match Franzen defaults. Ignoring this does not cause problems and the art does not suffer.
  • The save menu is on the party stats screen, not the EasyRPG Player main menu.
  • If you do not manually save your EasyRPG Player settings, they won't be applied the next time you run EasyRPG Player.
Franzen game files
The game data for Franzen is found here in a lowercase folder titled "franzen":
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Franzen
Another way to find this folder is by going into your Steam library, right clicking on Franzen in your game list, selecting "Properties...", selecting "Installed Files", and then selecting "Browse...".

Franzen save files can also be found inside, titled "Save01.lsd" to "Save15.lsd".
Getting EasyRPG Player
The latest version of EasyRPG Player as of the time of writing is 0.8.1.1 and I can confirm that it works without flaws... as far as I can tell because Franzen is unplayable without it.

https://easyrpg.org/player/downloads/
https://easyrpg.org/downloads/player/0.8.1.1/easyrpg-player-0.8.1.1-windows-x64.zip

This is a portable installation, so you'll want to extract the Player.exe file inside to its own folder.
Using EasyRPG Player
Copy the entire "franzen" game folder to the same folder that Player.exe is in. This will also transfer your save files.

To run Franzen, first run Player.exe and then select "franzen" from the menu.

Settings > Video > Scaling method
By default, when run normally through Steam, Franzen uses pixel perfect integer scaling instead of bilinear. Because the default bilinear scaling method used in EasyRPG Player is of good quality, this shouldn't be noticeabe if you don't change it.

Franzen was not designed for widescreen or ultrawide support. I can confirm that through all of Act 1 that the graphical bugs introduced by using widescreen are minor.

If you do not manually save your EasyRPG Player settings, they won't be applied the next time you run EasyRPG Player.

EasyRPG Player saves its settings here:
C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Roaming\EasyRPG %AppData%\EasyRPG

Saving
The save menu is on the party stats screen, not the EasyRPG Player main menu.

Because of how Franzen handles fights, I strongly recommend saving often and in a new slot each time so that if you have to return to a previous area then you aren't inconvenienced as much. (The fast forward keybinds really came in handy.) The save files are only 10 or 12 kilobytes each.
