Welcome + Disclaimer
Hello and welcome to the first entry in my Companion Builds series, featuring the 4 starter companions from the prologue in order of appearance.

This guide was brought to light because I've noticed that it is really hard finding "thematic" builds. Most builds online tend to focus on extreme min-maxing, which sadly don't always take immersion or the character's background into consideration. And while there's nothing wrong with playing like that, it is just not how I like playing. I like some roleplaying in my roleplaying game, you know.

So, I've created some builds that either keep the companions in their base classes (for the roleplay), or switch them into others that make a good fit based on their personality, background, or overall cool factor. I hope you like it!
Seelah
Our favorite local paladin. Not limited to paladin.

For all builds listed here, you can use any 1h weapon you want, with Longsword being the lore-friendly option because of Radiance. For easy fights where you don't need the shield, you have the option of keeping your off-hand free to enjoy a 50% damage bonus of wielding your weapon with both hands.

How to upgrade Radiance:
  • Prologue: Make sure you find it during the shield maze. It requires solving the color puzzle;
  • Act 1: talk to Joran outside of the tavern and pick the relevant dialogue option to show him the sword. Later, during the final part of Act 2, you'll meet him again by a forge, where you can ask him to upgrade it for you;
  • Act 3: find Yaniel while exploring the Midnight Fane, close to the end of act 3, and ask her to empower the weapon for you;
  • Act 5: you'll get the final upgrade just before a boss fight on Iz.

Attention: always keep the sword in your inventory / unequipped for all those steps.
- Melee Support
Her gameplay is quite simple: use a few buffs, heal when needed, smite tough foes, profit. Use a Charisma headband and the best gear you find.

This is not a full tank build, but she will naturally be quite tanky with armor and shield, along with double duration buffs later on. If you want a tankier version with a horse, check my Tank builds guide.

Skills: Knowledge (World), Use Magic Device for scrolls and wands, and Perception or Persuasion as needed.
Take all 20 levels into Paladin.

Feat - Mercy
Comment
3
Weapon Focus: weapon of choice - Mercy: Sickened
Only pick this Mercy if you're playing on Core though, otherwise Dretches won't cast Stinking Clouds. If you're below Core, pick Fatigued instead, which can be used to remove fatigue and delay resting a bit.
4
+1 CHA
5
Tower Shield Proficiency - Bond: Divine Weapon
Weapon Bond can be used to give an extra +1 hit chance to your weapon with its base ability. The Keen property raises critical chance, but you'll have this effect baseline later on. The Flaming property looks good on paper, but this extra damage will get easily resisted by demons, so it's not really useful.
6
Mercy - Fatigued (if not taken before) or Shaken
7
Outflank
Take this feat on every melee character in your party, ideally at the same level.
8
+1 CHA.

Here you'll have two extra Bond choices for extra damage: axiomatic and holy. If you don't need the extra hit chance of the base effect, those are good options that work on basically 99% of the enemies in this game since they are either chaotic, evil, or both. Some of your spells can give those effects, but you won't have a lot of spell slots.
9
Metamagic: Extend - Mercy: Exhausted
Exhausted can only be taken if you have taken Fatigued before, which you should have.
11
Improved Critical: Weapon of Choice
Mark of Justice can give your whole party your Smite effect for a huge attack bonus. Use it for bosses or other high armor enemies. This is why we are raising CHA on every opportunity.
12
Mercy: Stunned or Paralyzed.
+1 CHA.
13
Power Attack
15
Blind Fight - Mercy: Blinded
16
+1 CHA.
17

19

Lots of good stuff here. Enjoy!
- Support Poet
This build is best suited to go with a caster main character or a party with 2/3 casters. Court Poet brings a buff to INT and CHA, being a nice addition to the group's spellcasting abilities.

Since this subclass favors spellcasting, we'll have Seelah be a full backline support this time. Equip a shield and position her in the middle of your formation, or in front of your squishy mages to deal with any enemies that might want to get close. Give her a CHA headband, a STR belt, the best shield and armor you find along with a few buffs and she can hold her own just fine.

She will have cool buffs, skald song, and dispel magic to help with bosses, while being pretty tanky. Not bad. Also doesn't compete for gear with your mages, so they are free to do their blasting.

Skills: Knowledge (World), Use Magic Device (to use scrolls and wands), Perception.
Take all levels into Skald - Court Poet.

Lingering Performance - Combat Trick: Improved Initiative
To make the most out of your bardic inspiration charges, you can now turn it off in the same turn you activate it. It will still linger for 2 more turns, which basically means you have 3 times the amount of charges and don't have to worry too much about saving them.

Improved Initiative is just to make sure you always go first so you have your song and buffs rolling for everyone's first turn.

This will only work if you also pick it for at least one companion who's going to always stand close to Seelah. Recommended for one of your DPS mages to help with spell penetration, if you can afford the feat on them.

Otherwise, pick Destructive Dispel.
17

- Holy Martyr (respec)
Seelah is the most selfless person around, always putting the well-being of others before her own. So, we’re taking her personality traits to the next level by making her a Martyr Paladin, a shining beacon of support and protection for her friends. This build will offer great buffs, healing and debuff removal, tankyness, and damage. Honestly, this is my new cannon build for her.

The Martyr’s Mercy ability offers great versatility for your Mercy options. My recommendations will be based on effects that you’ll most likely need to cure in combat; that way, your auras will not get disabled while you still need them. Other effects, like fatigued or exhausted, can safely be cured out of combat. The healing bit of Lay on Hands is nothing to write home about, so use it mostly to cure those negative effects.

Note: the Stigmata passive states that the Paladin can “duplicate” the effects of Bard performances, but don’t think this means “double”. Duplicate in this case means replicate, i.e., produce a similar effect. This is the lore explanation of how the Martyr can use Bard songs. So no, it won’t give you double the bonuses. Booo!

To respec her with a different subclass, you need to use the Respec Mod[github.com]. If you need help with installing or using the mod, let me know!

Original choices for the respec: Background: Street Urchin (Pickpocket); Deity: Iomedae. Don’t change her base stats.

Skills: Use Magic Device, Persuasion. Spare points to anything else you need.
Take Paladin (Martyr) on every level.

1
Weapon Focus: Longsword – Lingering Performance
In case you don't know how to use Lingering Performance: deactivate your song right after activating it, and it will still linger for 2 more rounds, saving you a lot of charges.

As always, Longsword is taken due to it being the most lore-friendly option, but you can use any other weapon if you wish. 1-handed weapons are recommended so you can also use a shield.
3
Combat Reflexes – Mercy: Sickened
All my homies hate Dretches.
4

5
Metamagic: Extend – Bond: Divine Weapon
Metamagic can’t be used for now, so wait until you get your second mythic at level 7-8, then use it on all of your buffs for double duration.
The most common usage for Divine Weapon is giving you a bonus enhancement for your weapon (basically, higher hit chance). The other effects are situational, with the exception of Ghost Touch if you are fighting incorporeal enemies, and Brilliant Energy for heavy armoured enemies.

1
Bless Weapon, Veil of Heaven/Positive Energy
Bless Weapon is the best thing ever. Anyone under this effect will overcome demons’ damage reduction and have automatic critical hit confirmation against evil creatures, which are 95% of the game. Along with Veil of Heaven (and Positive Energy when fighting undead), they are the only buffs exclusive to Paladins, so that’s where most of your slots will go.
2
Aura of Greater Courage, Greater Magic Weapon, Protection from Alignment
The spell choice here is totally situational and most spells can also be cast by other companions. Aura of Greater Courage protects your party against fear, which is not very common, but at least it has a long duration so you can cast it and forget about it for a whole rest.
If you have nothing else to pick, the +4 buff spells are always good to have until you start to find equivalent belts.
3
Archon’s Aura, Angelic Aspect, Holy Whisper*
Holy Whisper will most likely be resisted by enemies, but the benefits for your allies are still good, so try to aim it at them instead.
4
Greater Angelic Aspect, Eaglesoul, Holy Sword
Greater Angelic Aspect is the aoe version of the one you got earlier, so use either one of them as needed. Eaglesoul gives you good defenses, a STR buff, and automatic critical hit confirmation (so you don’t need Bless Weapon for the same effect). However, it has a low duration, so save it for bosses or other hard enemies.
Camellia
Sadly, there's not a lot we can do with Cam in terms of different classes without abandoning her whole story and personality. We can, however, spicy things up a bit.

Since I've already made a tank build for her (which you can find here), we'll focus more on offense this time. I'll give you two build flavours, vanilla and spicy. If you are a new player, stick to vanilla, because spicy might contain spoilers and be too hot for you. IYKYK.

For both builds, equip a WIS headband and make sure to complete her personal quests to get the cool rapiers.

Also make sure to grab this from the Defender's Hearth vendor (can be bought anytime starting from act 1):

- Vanilla Cam
Vanilla flavour Shaman Cam, some good damage and some extra spell slots for a bit of magic support on the side. Everything you'd want from a full divine caster. She is helpful, after all.

Skills: Trickery and Perception.
Take all 20 levels into Shaman.

2

Spam this on you/your tank and it will carry you through the whole first act. It is that broken.
3

4
Slumber or Iceplant
+1 DEX.

Slumber will make your life in Act 1 a lot easier. However, if you have another hex user in your party (like Ember or your main character), it's probably a better idea to let them get Slumber and take Iceplant for Camellia. Since we won't be raising Cam's WIS a lot, offensive hexes won't scale that much for her, losing a good portion of their effectiveness past early game. In that case, the extra defense from Iceplant will be a better deal overall, especially if you're playing on Core.
5
Fencing Grace: Rapier
Now your DEX will be added to your damage. Remember that you can't equip anything other than a buckler in your off-hand, otherwise you'll lose this bonus. I do recommend using the buckler though for extra protection.
7

Extra range at the cost of defense. If you have Iceplant, it breaks even. Remember to activate it from your abilities tab.
10

- Spicy Cam (DLC)
WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD

If you are a new player, do not read ahead of your current level. You've been warned.

The first half of the build is mostly the same as in Vanilla Cam. And then, by the time we discover a certain kink peculiarity of hers, we'll let her channel her desires freely. She will have a lot more damage than the previous build, but won't reach 9th level spells or have a lot of spell slots. It's fine. She's still helpful.

For this build, use the best light or medium armor you find (ideally mithral). The list of recommended spells is mostly the same as in the previous build, so check that section for it!

The Lord of Nothing DLC required!

Skills: Trickery and Perception, with spare points to Mobility.

Devour Flesh traits

Sadly, there are very few dragons and magical beasts to be fought during the game, and hardly any fey. However, you'll find plenty of undead and outsiders (demons). Since this build won't have enough levels to get major traits, only minor traits are included.

Enemy
Minor trait
Dragon
Energy resistance equal to the flesheater's level. The energy type depends on the type of dragon.
Fey
Once per round, when the flesheater moves at least 10 feet or charges, she gains concealment (20% miss chance) for 1 round. At 8th level, the flesheater also gains evasion and uncanny dodge.
Magical Beast
Anyone striking the flesheater with a melee weapon, an unarmed strike, or a natural weapon takes 1d6 points of piercing damage. This damage increases by 1d6 for every 6 levels.
Outsider
Permanent Protection from Evil, Good, Law, or Chaos, depending on the alignment of the devoured outsider. The bonuses increase by 1 for every 6 levels.
Undead
Negative energy resistance equal to the flesheater's level.
Lann
Lann is a fun case. Deciding on a lore-friendly class for him took me HOURS (not joking).

I decided to go with Divine Hunter. It matches both his mongrel cave-dwelling background and his religious side. However, Hunters are known for their animal companions, so we would have to assume that he got sent an animal companion through his devotion. I'll go with the Riding Dog here, but honestly, it can be anything. At least I can totally picture Lann calling his dog a good boy. Just please don't name it Wendog. Don't do it. Please.

I'll come back to make another build for him eventually. Maybe. I promise. Kinda.

Wenduag
For Wenduag, I bring you two builds: the first one is a Ranger, which matches her personality and is closer to her original character in the tabletop game. The second one is a full-flavour pick as a Shifter so she can, you know, actually turn into a spider.
- The adept Ranger
Wenduag is unmatched when it comes to exploring and surviving dire situations. For this build, we'll give her all the means necessary to be the most skilled ranger the Crusade has ever seen. Probably the meaneast, too. I'm quite proud of this one.

Give her a WIS headband so she has access to higher level spells. There are several unique Longbows to be found, so explore and find them! Make sure to use composite longbows for extra damage.

No, this is not an axe-throwing build. I'm tired of that, boss. She does, however, have a lizard pet, as in the original tabletop game.

1
Hurricane Bow, Aspect of The Falcon, Magic Fang, Acid Maw
Acid Maw only when fighting humans or other enemies with no acid resistance.
2
Sense Vitals, Cat's Grace, Barkskin
Sense Vitals is your top priority.
3
Instant Enemy
Can be used on humans, constructs, gargoyles, animals, or any other type of enemy you don't already have as Favored Enemy normally. Check the enemies' stat page to know their type.

Freedom of Movement, Animal Growth

Pet leveling

Class: Bully
Skills: Athletics, Mobility
First leveling point to INT (level 4), the rest to STR.

Your pet has 2 jobs: biting people to make them fall (so they get attacks of opportunity when getting up), and protecting your backline, either by holding an enemy with the Grabber ability, or bull rushing them away.

The lizard won't get big enough for you to ride it, unless you cast either Reduce Person on Wenduag or Legendary Proportions/Animal Growth on the pet.

1
Fury's Fall
Right-click the Trip ability to make it your pet's basic attack. Unless you're fighting something that can't be knocked prone.
3
Weapon Focus: Bite
4
+1 INT
5
Combat Reflexes
7
Outflank
9
Power Attack
This is only here as a requirement for the next feat, since your pet will be using trip or bull rush most of the time.
11
Greater Bull Rush
Now, every time you bull rush an enemy, they will provoke attacks of opportunity from your allies. Pretty neat.

Improved Critical (Bite)

Shake it Off
- Spider's Web (DLC)
Now, for the full cool factor, we'll make Wenduag a true spider. Ungoliant would be proud.

Even though we're building her as a damage dealer, she will naturally be quite tanky due to her high DEX and the spider form giving a bonus to AC. If you are playing with mods, you can also respec her to go full Shifter and remove her ranged feats. This is not mandatory, however.

For equipment, use a WIS headband and the best DEX belt you find. Don't worry about STR. Since you already got the DLC, make sure to complete Ulbrig's personal quests because there are a couple of great items for Shifters available from those areas (assuming you won't give those to Ulbrig lol).

This build requires the Last Sarkorians DLC.

Skills: Mobility, Stealth, and Lore (Nature).

Take Shifter (base class) on every level. Check down below for an explanation about the feats and class' abilities.

2
Aspect: Spider
For now, it's just a basic +2 to AC, so keep playing as a ranged character.
3
Weapon Finesse
This will make your spider bite attack use your DEX for hit chance, so you don't have to worry about raising STR. Until level 5, either keep using a bow or buy a melee weapon from the vendor outside of the tavern.
4
+1 DEX.
5
Piranha Strike
You now have the major spider aspect, which means actually turning into a spider. The game is on. Turn your Shifter Claws ability on.
6
Aspect: Tiger
Note that you cannot activate this along with the spider aspect yet, so keep doing your spider business until you can activate both at the same time at level 10.
7
Outflank
Take this feat with every melee character in your party, ideally at the same level!

Don't forget to activate the Shifter's Fury ability!
8
+1 DEX.
9
Shifter's Multiattack
10
You can now activate 2 minor aspects at a time, so use spider + tiger for the extra DEX. More DEX = higher hit chance, AC, initiative, and damage. What's not to like?
11
Extended Aspects - Aspect: Wolf
12
+1 DEX.
13
Improved Critical: Bite
15
Weapon Focus: Bite
Use Wolf as your third minor aspect for extra damage.
16
Aspect: Wolverine
+1 DEX.

Use Wolverine instead of Wolf as your third aspect when you need extra defenses/health. The rage power doesn't matter since it only works for the major form, which you won't use.
17
Dodge
19
Any teamwork feat
Shake it Off is a good choice, assuming you pick the same with other companions.
20
+1 CHA.

Shifter Abilities explained.

Here you can see how Wenduag's skill bar is looking at max level.

3 - Greater Chimeric Aspect: toggle 2 or 3 aspects (always take spider) as seen here and then click the ability itself to activate them. Keep in mind that the minor aspects last for 1 minute per charge, so don't forget to uncheck it after combat so it doesn't run out too fast. After you get Extended Aspects, they will last a little bit longer;

5 - Shifter Claws: always on. This will boost your bite attacks with more damage and make them bypass damage reductions, super important when fighting demons;

6 - Shifter's Fury: click it and toggle it on for the Bite, allowing you to perform several attacks in a row with it (without this, you would only be able to do one attack per round);

7 - Piranha Strike: always on, unless you're having trouble to hit.

9 - Major Form: before you get your first mythic ability (at the end of act 1), you'll only be able to shapeshift a few times per day with a duration of 1 hour each time. After you get Master Shapeshifter, you'll be able to stay in spider form permanently.

@adoginpants The animal aspect spells apply a polymorph effect, so she can have the benefits of master shapeshifter while under those. She has at least one animal aspect spell on each level to have this always up.

I'm confused on why Wendaug should take the master shapeshifter mythic ability in the ranger build. Am I missing something?

Thanks a lot!

I just posted part 2! Took a lot longer but it's finally ready. :GhostScared:

Thx a lot for this. Was looking for a guide for ''canon'' build characters.
Looking for part 2!

It works with shortbow too! It's just that longbow has a lot more unique options. But you can also use shortbow just fine! I'll edit the guide to include that option!

Just make sure to use composite shortbows for the extra damage!

Crossbow sadly would not work because his level 2 passive only applies to long and shortbow.

does lann works with shortbow/crossbow or does he only works with longbow? (sorry for my bad english)
