Notes for Heretic + Hexen Achievements
由 Ilko 制作
My rookie attempt at giving general tips and directions for earning achievements in Heretic + Hexen enhancement-less, with some exceptions. This isn't a step-by-step guide for each achievement per se, so keep that in mind as I'm assuming that you're jumping into this re-release ready to put some work into it.

Important Notes
Unless stated otherwise, all notes are written with original versions of Single Player for games and expansion in mind — with all Gameplay Modifiers included in the re-release disabled as that's my preference overall. Some things may be slightly different if you play with all enhancements enabled compared to pure original. If so, you would have to just deal with it on your own.

This guide also doesn't provide step-by-step notes for some achievements. Certain descriptions would be too long to fit within appropriate segment, so I opted to either leave it up for reader's improvisation or simply refer to The Doom Wiki[doomwiki.org] for useful details.

Lastly, it's worth mentioning that you can use Cheats to make achievements much easier for yourself. While I don't reiterate this later on, I'm sure you can figure out how to cut corners if that's the approach you want to take.
Heretic

Staff Intervention
Heretic: Kill 5 enemies with the Staff in one map (powered up or not).

Necrotized
Heretic: Kill 10 enemies with the Gauntlets of the Necromancer in one map (powered up or not).

Master Assassin
Heretic: Kill all enemies on one map.

Now I've Seen Everything
Heretic: Find all secrets on one map.

Clean Sweep
Heretic: Get all items on one map.

These achievements can be done at any point in Heretic, but fastest and easiest way would be in E1M1: The Docks. When you start, switch to Staff to kill some Gargoyles as you progress through the map.

Open yellow door and go downstairs until you reach another door. After you open it, you'll be greeted by flashing corner with a demonic face and mouth full of skulls. Interact with it to reveal a room with Gauntlets of the Necromancer. Take them, put Gauntlets on and destroy first 10 enemies standing on your way.

For tips on remaining secrets, I recommend reading the map page on The Doom Wiki.[doomwiki.org] Explore the map, kill everything in sight and make sure you pick every item around you. Keep your eye on automap since it shows your progress on the map.

I'm Kinda Unstoppable
Heretic: Activate a Ring of Invincibility, the Wings of Wrath, and a Tome of Power all at once.

Just be on the lookout for each item. Sooner or later, you'll get them all. My recommendation would be E1M5: The Citadel as its secrets[doomwiki.org] contain both Ring of Invincibility and Wings of Wrath.

Power Trip
Heretic: Kill 20 enemies in one Tome of Power powerup duration.

I earned it at the beginning of E1M7: The Crypts by using Tome of Power I got earlier maps. Just kept reloading an autosave until I got it. Alternatively, use the item when you see around 20 enemies at any point in your playthrough and make sure you kill them all quickly.

Eggs Caliber
Heretic: Transform 5 enemies into chickens with a single use of the Morph Ovum.

The City of the Damned
Heretic: Complete Heretic Episode 1.

The final room in E1M8: Hell's Maw was a good "Eggs Caliber" spot for me because it had a lot of Disciples of D'Sparil and Golems on ground floor. Morph Ovum is laying on a platform alongside Iron Lich(es) in case you don't have one already. Grab that egg, defeat Iron Lich(es) and make a save before heading into opened room in case you don't get the achievement on your first try.

As for the "City of the Damned" itself, you just need to complete its final map — the one I talked about in prior paragraph. Take on the entire episode or Level Select it.

Manna from Heaven
Heretic: Kill 3 enemies with the rain from a single powered-up Hellstaff shot.

You need to lead 3 enemies into the rain from Hellstaff shot powered by active Tome of Power. The earliest moment you can get this weapon on continuous playthrough is the second secret[doomwiki.org] in E2M1: The Crater that opens up after you get close to a door into the exit room.
You may be able to get it on the same map if you leave enough enemies alive, but I earned it in E2M2: The Lava Pits when an opportunity presented itself.

Balls of Steel
Heretic: Find a Firemace.

Wrath of the Phoenix
Heretic: Kill 3 enemies at once with a single Phoenix Rod shot.

Ready for Anything
Heretic: Finish a map with 100 health, 200 armor, and all weapons.

E2M3: The River of Fire is a good map for these achievements. At the start, you may notice that lava on the left and right lead to inaccessible pools with Phoenix Rod on the right and Firemace with Mystic Urn on the left. They lower down after you press a switch in front of a blue key. You can also grab Firemace after getting your hands on green key — a wall in front of you will open up and reveal ice and muddy water where weapon pick-up is laying.

I suggest keeping as many of Gargoyles alive as possible by manoeuvring around the map until you get access to the blue key and the switch in front of it. Go to the lowered lava pool with Phoenix Rod, grab it and make a save for trying to kill a few enemies at once until you get it.

You can collect the entire arsenal while exploring The Rivers of Fire, but you'll most likely need to only find Phoenix Rod and Firemace if you play continuously. Once you get into the blue area, make sure to not grab anything in left room close to a door into exit room before you deal with all enemies nearby. That room contains Enchanted Shield that will give you 200 Armor. Make sure you're at full health (Mystic Urn might come in handy), double-check all your weapons and take Enchanted Armor. Avoid molten rock floors on your way to the exit!

Charbroiled to Perfection
Heretic: Kill a Maulotaur with a powered-up Phoenix Rod.

Hell's Maw
Heretic: Complete Heretic Episode 2.

First time you face Maulotaur(s) in E2M8: The Portals of Chaos. If you don't have Phoenix Rod, Tome of Power and Ring of Invincibility, you'll see them in a central area where Maulotaur(s) are standing. Use them all together to deal get the achievement safely.

Once you're done burning Maulotaur(s), head to the unlocked teleporters to finish the episode.

D'Stroy D'Sparil
Heretic: Kill D'Sparil.

The Dome of D'Sparil
Heretic: Complete Heretic Episode 3.

Reach E3M8: D'Sparil's Keep by playing through the episode or level select it. Push through until you come face-to-face with D'Sparil. Kill the Serpent Rider and get the achievement.
You can also encounter D'Sparil in Faith Renewed's E1M8: The Great Chapel.

After you "D'Stroy D'Sparil", a northern room with a switch will open. Activate it to get access to the exit room. Step into the teleporter to see Heretic's ending, earning this achievement.
Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders

The Ossuary
Heretic: Complete Heretic Episode 4.

Get to E4M8: Shattered Bridge and complete it. You can do that by beating the entire episode or selecting its last level.

The Stagnant Demesne
Heretic: Complete Heretic Episode 5.

Reach E5M8: Field of Judgement and complete it. As I mentioned before, you can also just Level Select it.

You're Not Supposed to Be Here
Heretic: Complete one of the hidden bonus levels.

This isn't about typical secret levels, but Fate's Path — a "hidden" pack of Deathmatch maps accessible either through Level Select or console commands. Select either E6M1: Raven's Lair or E6M2: The Water Shrine and just play through the map.
Ignore E6M3: American's Legacy because this map has no proper exit.
Heretic: Faith Renewed

A Shocking Development
Heretic: Find the Tempest Wand.

Tempest Wand is hidden in E1M9: Pocket Plane, the secret level of Faith Renewed. You can access it by finding a secret exit in E1M6: Foundry or choosing Pocket Plane in Level Select menu.
As for the Foundry, secret exit is accessible after you get a blue key. Pick it up and move along opened path. Turn right and open blue door. Clear it up before you reach the switch in front of regular exit door. Get up close to it, turn left and interact with a pillar before you. Go into teleporter and then head back. Turn around and leave the area. Run to the main area. There, you'll notice Mystic Urn. Take it, and then you'll see an area open with secret exit teleporters. Go there.
Once you're in Pocket Plane, progress through a bit. When you get to the big open area with many fire hazards and lava, turn slightly to the right and approach the first button in front of aforementioned hazards. Press it and approach lowering pillar up ahead. Survive until it lowers and press the second button. A pillar with Tempest Wand will come down, allowing you to take it and claim the achievement.

Faith Renewed
Heretic: Complete 'Faith Renewed'.

Play through entirety of Faith Renewed or level select E1M8: The Grand Chapel. Exit the map after killing D'Sparil (again) to get an achievement.
Hexen: Beyond Heretic [1]

Infinite Combo
Hexen: Land 10 flawless combos in a row with the Spiked Gauntlets.

Bombs Away
Hexen: Kill an off-screen enemy with the Fighter's Flechette.

Out of the Blue
Hexen: Kill 2 enemies at once with the Sapphire Wand.

Sequence Break
Hexen: Ring the bell in Winnowing Hall without picking up the silver key.

Winnowing Hall is an easy starting point for the first few Hexen achievements as everything you need is already in front of you. "Infinite Combo" demands precision from a Fighter because each combo requires 3 successful hits in a row. They don't have to be quick, so just make sure you don't disrupt combo by hitting breakable objects, punching them 'incorrectly' (it sometimes happen) or missing altogether. I got the achievement without getting hit, and I'm not sure if that plays a role too, but keep that in mind anyway.

Fighter's Fléchette bounces off terrain, so you just need to throw a couple or so flasks at an enemy from a distance, turn around and run away from them. There're a few flasks waiting for you in the chapel alongside some Ettins, which should make it relatively easy.

Mage's starting weapon, Sapphire Wand, has an ability to pierce multiple foes with its line strike. Its damage isn't that high, so your goal here is to hit same two enemies consecutively in order to see them drop dead together. A couple of Ettins at the starting yard in Winnowing Hall should suffice.

For the last achievement, you need to go through Winnowing Hall as a Mage up until you open emerald gates. Enter opened courtyard and look at the bell above you. Shoot it with Sapphire Wand to get an achievement and progress further.

It's for a Special Occasion
Hexen: Collect and hold 25 of any artifact.

You'll most likely get it naturally during a playthrough, but there's a faster method to this as well. Since difficulty directly affects the amount of items lying around in maps, you should stick to first or second option. Pick any class and grab any Quartz Flask or Fléchette you see in Winnowing Hall and accessible parts of Seven Portals' maps without using any of them.
I got the achievement as a Fighter on second difficulty after passing through the first part of Guardian of Ice: I gathered 24 Fléchettes and just needed to get one more from opened portal rooms for Guardian of Fire/Steel.

Schlurp!
Hexen: Heal a total of 1000 health with the Serpent Staff.

I would recommend earning this achievement on 1-3 difficulties because Serpent Staff would be waiting for you in Seven Portals' hub. Should you play on 4-5 difficulties, you would have to progress a bit in Guardian of Steel to get it. Although you also have to deal with more enemies on higher difficulties, which can make it easier for some players. Third difficulty is a good middle ground of sorts in this case.
Once you get Serpent Staff, you just have to damage enemies up close. When you do that, it acts similarly to Gauntlets of the Necromancer from Heretic powered by Tome of Power: draining health from enemies you attack. Just use it over the course of your playthrough or make a save at preferred spot to farm the same foes until you get the achievement: you can literally just run past all enemies in Seven Portals hub after getting there, open door to the room with first Guardian of Ice portal, take Serpent Staff and save for repeated lifesteal slaughter.

Look Out Below
Hexen: Cause an enemy to fall to their death.

This achievement is more lenient than its description make it seem. Once you get into the first portal of Guardian of Fire and solve one third of a puzzle there as a Fighter, stand right in front of a pouring lava with two crimson statues placed between it and keep at least one Ettin alive. Turn left to the wall with grey Flame Mask on it and go interact with it. You'll get to the bridge across huge abyss. Get close to it to initiate a scripted sequence where this bridge gets destroyed. Lead an Ettin right to the edge of abyss and punch him to death with either Spiked Gauntlets or Timon's Axe. If corpse falls down, you should get the achievement.
Alternatively, you can wait until you get your hands on Disc of Repulsion in Bright Crucible (secret map of Seven Portals) or Darkmere (a map in Shadow Wood). Just use it on an enemy close to some abyss and watch them fall.

It's a Gas
Hexen: Kill 3 centaurs/slaughtaurs with a single gas cloud.

It's very easy to get with some prior preparations. First, you have to be a Cleric for this to get gas cloud from a Fléchette. Get into the first portal to Guardian of Steel and deal with all the Ettins without getting blocked. Lead at least one Centaur that would come after you up one of staircases: it doesn't matter which. Once there, you'll be greeted by two more Centaurs and you can begin manoeuvring around them until all three of them are close by. Place one(!) Fléchette right under their noses. Watch them die one-by-one until you earn the achievement.
Once again, this is the earliest point for getting it. You'll have more opportunities to get it naturally through the playthrough as Cleric if this particular scenario is too difficult for you.

Sculpture Garden
Hexen: Have a total of 10 un-shattered frozen corpses active at once.

You probably can pull this one off without any Gameplay Modifiers on third difficulty, but I recommend having at least Enhanced Weapons enabled. I did an achievement run with Enhanced Levels on too, but that's not necessary if you play as a Mage from the start. Play through Seven Portals as usual, pick Frost Shards and enter Guardian of Ice for the first time. Its available segment has 10 Ettins with two of them waiting for you close by. Keep them alive and go forth until you meet another pack of Ettins and pass a trigger to spawn the rest.
Avoid their attacks and make sure those first two Ettins follow you down the stairs. Once all ten of them are on the same ground level, just try hitting all Ettins with Frost Shards. Making a save around this point would be useful. Enhanced Weapons allow frozen projectiles to pass through frozen enemies, which helps quite a bit. Keep trying until you get "Sculpture Garden".
Hexen: Beyond Heretic [2]
Are You Ready to Fly?
Hexen: Find and use the Wings of Wrath.

Play through Seven Portals normally until you activate the last switch in Guardian of Steel and get "Stairs have risen on the Seven Portals" message. Teleport back to hub's map and walk into the main area. Walk up each set of stairs close by (one of them will rise up shortly after you teleported here) and pull the switch in front of you. After that, walk south to closed gates. They'll start opening up before you, revealing a small arena with enemies. Deal with them and pull a switch to open a wall before you. Walk forward and turn left (ignore portal in a distance). You'll see a small opening with blue mana pick-ups. Jump there and follow the path (be ready to fight some foes) that will lead you to Wings of Wrath. Pick up the item and use it.

The Old One-Two
Hexen: Kill an enemy with a gas cloud launched by a Disc of Repulsion.

While you can get this achievement on Seven Portals, it's only technically the earliest point for it because you'll need to reach Bright Crucible as a Cleric — the secret level of the first hub. Back at a pair of staircases I mentioned in "Are You Ready to Fly?" segment (you can get Wings of Wrath first if you want), there're puzzle switches similar to ones you interacted with for progressing in this hub opposed to other switches that open the final part of Seven Portals. Activate them, and you'll get "A door opened on the Guardian of Ice" message for each. This optional puzzle and secret map itself can throw some challenging encounters at you, but I'll leave it up for you to figure out. Have fun with that.
Once you reached Bright Crucible, a single Disk of Repulsion will be laying in a distance: it's the only one you'll get from here. Take the item. You have to be a Cleric for this as his Fléchette will give you a gas cloud you'll need to launch towards an enemy with a Disk: it's highly lethal to most enemies in the game (aside from bosses), so don't be picky.
Alternatively, you can just naturally stumble into Disks of Repulsion at Darkmere in Shadow Wood hub and later in the game.

Triple Play
Hexen: Play as all three classes (Fighter, Cleric and Mage) over the course of a single Hexen hub.

For this achievement, you must play Hexen with Enhanced Levels enabled as that's the only way to have access to class switching in-game... for whatever reason. I recommend sticking to Seven Portals and completing a major step in hub's main puzzle as each class.
For example, I completed Seven Portals in following way:
  • Entered Guardian of Ice as Fighter.
  • Took on Guardian of Fire as Mage.
  • Explored Guardian of Steel as Cleric.
  • Unlocked and ventured into Bright Crucible as Cleric.
Of course, I would encourage you do this in your way in whatever hub you want. I'm not sure if transforming into two other classes for a few seconds before going back to your preferred one would work, so shake things up in your playthrough just to be sure... It's also just more fun this way, you know?

I Thought This Was a Melee Class?
Hexen: Kill an enemy from a very long distance with the Hammer of Retribution.

You'll first find Hammer of Retribution in Shadow Wood's hub, in a subzone with a portal to Darkmere. Pick it up and attack Green Chaos Serpents that are standing far away from you up above. Even if you somehow fail to get achievement after killing them, you can get it later in your playthrough.

Porcine Predicament
Hexen: Get turned into a pig and then survive.

Makin' Bacon
Hexen: Transform 5 enemies into pigs with a single use of the Porkalator.

To get your hands on Porkalator, you'll need to explore Darkmere as a Cleric or Mage. If you play with Enhanced Levels, Fighter will get to see a Porkalator on his way as well. In Single Player, you can be turned into a pig if a Centaur/Slaughtaur uses their shield to deflect a Porkalator's projective towards you. Conveniently enough, there're some Centaurs up ahead in Darkmere. Make a save after picking Porkalator, go forward until you meet a Centaur and let them deflect the projectile. Survive the encounter and reload the save you made earlier to have Porkalator for later.
You might be able to also get this achievement in Deathmatch when another player hits you with Porkalator only for you to survive through transformation period.

Initially I tried to get another achievement in a room with water in Darkmere, but it didn't go well. So instead I went back to an autosave to a point where I entered Darkmere and run pass all enemies to grab Porkalator. I made a new save right after that, run back to a crowd of enemies and use the item. Took me a couple of attempts to get "Makin' Bacon".

Pieces of Power
Hexen: Assemble your fourth weapon on any class.

You have to put together your fourth weapon with 3 fragments you find in the first three hubs, and they're hard to miss. First fragment(s) will be laying of a portal in Seven Portals that transports you to Shadow Wood. All of them are placed in one place.
Next ones can be found as you explore rooms in Hypostyle, the last map of the second hub: northern for Cleric, western for Mage and eastern for Fighter.
Last fragments can be discovered in an eastern wing of Heresiarch's Seminary. One of a dragon walls at the staircase leading to Orchard of Lamentations' portal open to a cellar room of sorts and a fragment for each weapon will be placed in a different part of that room. You'll gain access to it after pulling a switch in a small area hidden behind a couple of dead trees.
Once you assemble your Wraithverge, Quietus and/or Bloodscourge, you'll have get "Pieces of Power". And yes, you're also putting them together in Deathkings of the Dark Citadel and Vestiges of Grandeur.

I Hate That Guy
Hexen: Kill a Heresiarch.

You get to fight Heresiarch not only in Heresiarch's Seminary after progressing through game's third hub, but you'll also run into him at Gibbet in Castle of Grief. The easy and fun way to kill Heresiarch is to surroud him with multiple gas clouds from Cleric's Fléchette that will literally melt the sorcerer.
Naturally, he also returns multiple times over the course of both Deathkings of the Dark Citadel and Vestiges of Grandeur.
Hexen: Beyond Heretic [3]
Are YOU Ready to Die?
Hexen: Kill Korax.

Checkmate
Hexen: Complete 'Hexen: Beyond Heretic'.

Play through Necropolis and unlock the portal to Dark Crucible. There, you'll come face-to-face with Korax. My only advice here is to not kill him too quickly by using a lot of Fléchettes as Cleric: you'll get softlocked! Also watch your step for spikes that can be risen up by Serpent Rider! Let him teleport away, allowing the waves of Ettins & Centaurs come from opened doors. Destroy them all to get access into the second part of Dark Crucible where damaged Korax will be waiting. Once you get there, destroy him.
You can also fight Korax in Vestiges of Grandeur's MAP08: Korax's Domain.

An exit portal will open up in the second part of Dark Crucible only after Korax's death. Step through it to get the achievement.

The Full Party
Hexen: Complete a Hexen hub in co-op with at least a Fighter, Cleric and Mage all present.

Multiplayer achievements can be quite a nuisance to deal with and this one is no exception. It will become more and more difficult as time goes on because that's just the nature of these things. With that being said, there're actually a few paths for you to choose from. You can deal with "The Full Party" achievement depending on what options are available to you at this point in time:
  • Friends — if you have friends who would like to play some Hexen with you, that's awesome! Just ask/convince them, agree on the time, who plays what class and all that sort of thing. You'll surely have fun together.
  • Strangers — whenever you don't have friends period or they're simply not interested in Hexen, your option is to find like-minded achievement hunters. You can look for public Cooperative matches in re-release's match browser or search for dedicated "The Full Party" posts here and there.
  • Solo — you might just be able to deal with this achievement yourself by using Split Screen option. If you have two gamepads at your disposal, you can just connect them to your PC and launch a Local Cooperative match to play through chosen Hub "normally".
Seven Portals is probably the easiest and fastest Hub to play through for this achievement, especially if you already played Hexen before. Feel free to try different Hub though.
Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel

Regicide Tenebrae
Hexen: Complete 'Deathkings of the Dark Citadel'.

Make your way to expansion's third hub, Nave. You can also just get there via Level Select. Play through the entire hub until you get to its final map Dark Citadel. Make your final stand against three waves of enemies and enter the revealed portal afterwards.
Hexen: Vestiges of Grandeur

Ozymandias
Hexen: Complete 'Vestiges of Grandeur'.

Entirety of Vestiges of Grandeur consists of one Hub with up to 9 maps, so Level Select option won't be helpful. In order to complete this expansion, you have to enter MAP08: Korax's Domain and face every foe and puzzle standing on your way. In other words, deal with it as you see fit: be it a proper playthrough or whatever alternative comes to your mind.

Nice observation, Mattador. Forgot to comment on that before. A glitch that you're describing doesn't sound that surprising. This re-release was and still is kind of rough in some areas.

I earned "Power Trip" accidentally, by activating a Tome of Power in E1M8, then manually loading into E2M1 and playing as usual. Seems like the tracker doesn't disengage like it should when moving between saves.

For anyone having trouble getting it the normal way, you can always try that.
