It is a critique of Half-Life 1's remake - Black Mesa, as well as a comparison of Xen, of what Valve and mod makers did. It is also a timeline, a review and an analysis about Valve. Though it has elements of a documentary, because i touch history of this game.

They've also made pointless multiplayer maps, while maps aren't usually as bad as something you'd see in Garry's Mod, playing Team Fortress 2 and Counter-Strike 2 with cheaters and bots would probably be more fun than playing this.

As for maps being very narrow which is one of my criticisms on Xen, i don't expect the level of open-world to be as big as in Grand Theft Auto 5 or any gta game. Despite being greenlit on Steam a long time ago, they've only released Xen a few years ago.

I talk about game development for this first-person shooter, a bit of story and narrative pieces they added into it. I even talk about the music in the game and how it compares to its counterpart and how much wasted potential there is, how boring Xen can be with gameplay on the background. Game design has a lot of flaws. I criticize the game and speak about how hyperbolized boss battles are, how they are bad, not good and also boring.

Community usually doesn't understand choices of the original developers of Valve and half-life, not only in this mod, but also in Portal mods set on the same Source Engine, where they make puzzles too challenging, difficult. It was about everything else, intrigue, narrative, humor, not hard for the sake of being hard. There should bee more meaning to it and while Xen is not difficult by itself, it is tedious and lackluster in Black Mesa. It was made by fans, so...

I do expect many players to speak positively about Xen if it were made for VR like Half-Life: Alyx and other vr headset games because hl alyx was also not good and yet people spoke positively about it just because it was only vr game in its space. Black Mesa performance is very poor, despite not having RTX in it. Because they haven't done a good enough optimization. Hardware required to play these games is higher than it should be, with rtx gpus and most powerful cpus. Of course, performance isn't as bad as in cyberpunk or other games that were overrated and overhyped, it's still not very good, poorly made. There are still less cutscenes and story in this game compared to other games, which is actually not a bad thing, good rather, because they don't take away gameplay from you and let you enjoy, engage the actual game. Games are antistress in a way or they can be stressful, but they certainly should not be boring. Cutscenes, story and narrative when appear too frequently in front of you detract many players, especially when there is no player agency. Sadly none of this matters for xen in black mesa because there is barely any exploration. Exploration in the level environment is also important in a first-person shooting game to help relax.

That's why level-design is very important.

Black Mesa Xen is just not very good. It doesn’t feel creative or even advancing for how long it takes to complete. The entire game up to this point that was closely based on Half-Life 1 actually had fun ideas and the sense of progress where the player acquires new weapons, sees new enemy types or some narrative pieces with occasional NPC interactions. Xen is completely devoid of that and not in a good way. Even if they wouldn’t include any new narrative pieces and they didn’t have to, Xen had a potential to be something more powerful and meditative, but something that wouldn’t leave the player bored, wondering «is it too boring? does it drag for too long? when am I gonna actually see something truly new that’s worth being excited about?» Those are the questions that many players have subconsciously asked themselves while playing Xen. And the ones that talk about how «good and incredible» Xen in Black Mesa is are usually people who talk about the «breathtaking graphics and environment» rather than something native to Half-Life such as game-design and advancing gameplay.

When those who think they liked Xen in Black Mesa struggle to point out any actually worthy and enjoyable elements to xen apart from graphics, then there is a serious problem with the game. Graphics is not enough for everyone, some players just want something more interesting and native to half-life. That does not quite feel like half-life and once you understand what half-life is about, you’ll realize why it’s so lacking, because having repetitive puzzles and monotonous environment for hours is not what we know Half-Life series for. They took the game-design it established up until Xen and threw it out the window. It’s not exactly a thrilling, exciting or fun gameplay to get through the levels.
