FAQ - Before You Buy (Wolfpack in 2025)
由 ☆ Special Guest Star ☆ 制作
This FAQ has been made to give you a clear picture about the state of Wolfpack, and what you can expect from the game in 2025. For further questions, I urge you to join Wolfpack's Discord server, where the Community will offer answers to their best knowledge. This is not a gameplay guide. Without further due, let's see the most common questions of the recent months.

Before you buy
Is Wolfpack abandoned?
No. The developers post reports on their progress every month on the game's Steam page.

When will the next update be released?
There is no set date. To give you an honest answer to this, the development is painfully slow. That is not something new though, it has always been the case, but the devs always came up with something cool. Don't expect it tomorrow, or the next few weeks. Being patient is a useful trait in Wolfpack.

What will be in the next update?
Just to mention a few upcoming features: complete netcode rehaul, full world map, campaign mode, celestial navigation. Also, playable Flower class corvette, dedicated servers, and U-boat damage control are also on the roadmap.

What does the current version have to offer?
It has two playable branches:

1) Stable main branch
Although the netcode is stable and bug-free for the most part, it does NOT contain manually operable engines, and the roles on the boat are limited to the five original ones (Captain, Navigator, Dive Officer, Helmsman, Radioman). This version is NOT played by any players.

2) Beta-beta*
This version is played by practically every player as it comes with two extra roles (Chief Engineer and Machinist), offers manually operated Diesel and Electric engines and a rehauled boat interior.
HOWEVER! As its name says, it is a beta version, which means it comes with several issues. More details in the next question.

*Downloading the beta is available once you own a copy of the game, and can be done by selecting beta-beta at Steam Library -> Wolfpack -> Game Properties -> Betas

What are the hardware requirements?
If you meet the minimal requirements suggested by Steam, you should be fine. I used to play the game on an Nvidia 1080 GPU, and it was fine. Lowering the graphical settings to minimal won't really make an impact on gameplay. Some textures aren't optimised very well though, so you might experience higher GPU demand on occasions.

How playable this beta-beta is?
Basically, the netcode is pretty broken, which means you may encounter lag, desync or sound issues. Also, there are some UI bugs, and some features aren't working as intended, such as the Workshop Editor.
But before you get discouraged by the sound of this, the game is playable. There are some workarounds and 3rd party patches that solve many of these problems. It is far from perfect, but keep in mind, the reason for the netcode currently being re-written from scratch is this instability. We're riding a wild horse without a saddle, but the Community has learned to endure and overcome its outbursts.

If I buy, what kind of games can I expect?
If you decide to buy, expect something non-mainstream. Wolfpack is partially arcade, partially simulation game in a World War II German U-boat setting. A niche game, mostly played by WWII and/or U-boat enthusiasts. You can take up on any role, such as the Helmsman who steers the boat and uses an Engine Order Telegraph to forward speed orders to the engineers. You can jump in as the Dive Officer, who has valve and plane controls, or the Navigator, whose flexible roles are to either navigate the boat on the map, or be the right hand of the Captain. The engineers operate the Diesel and Electric engines, and the radioman communicates with the other U-boats. Of course, the most complex and responsible role is the Captain. As Captain, you have to manage your boat's operations, maneuvers, calculate solutions for the torpedoes, handle the crew, keep the boat safe, etc...

What is the minimal crew?
I would say the bare minimum is three people: one Engineer, one acting as both Dive Officer and Helmsman, and of course, a Captain. Having and extra Engineer, and separate people for Dive and Help is more optimal. The Navigator role can be flexible, and a Radioman is only necessary if there are other boats to communicate with, or significant time is spent submerged, which makes it necessary to have a hydrophone operator.
Keep in mind, bots are available in the game. They do the job. Kinda.

How many people play this game in 2025?
Quite a few, but mainly in hosted game events several times a week, rather than in random lobbies. Although you might find some occasional random games, the majority of the community plays scheduled events, both in European and American time zones. These games run from 2 to 4 hours in length at a time, in sessions of multiple rounds of attacks on a convoy. Up to four U-boats can participate and co-operate in these encounters. Of course, you can join and leave at any time, maybe except for the captain, which is a bit of a commitment, since that role is not always replaceable.

Is the game repetitive?
Since all sessions are relatively similar to each other, some may find the game repetitive after a while. A good practise to avoid this is regularly changing your played roles, learning new stations, or looking for different settings and challenges. There are always new ways. It really depends on your tolerance to repetitiveness.

So is the price worth it?
Depends. If you're looking for constant action, shooting left and right at enemies, Wolfpack might not be your game. It is a delicate task to get into firing position, make solutions and attack. It takes time and a lot of patience. However, if you're willing to commit a few hours of your life to learn the roles, you might find the games a lot of fun. Wolfpack is highly dependent on co-operation, a puzzle that needs a piece of every player's contribution. And when it comes together, the torpedoes hit, burn and sink targets, it is incredibly satisfying.

I find the price a bit steep, will the game go on sale?
Unfortunately, it is unlikely. It has never been on sale since its release in 2019. Hopefully, we can convince the devs to put it on sale when the next update is released to refill the playerbase.

What about the Community?
The Community is what keeps this game alive. It is a small, very dedicated group of people, divided into smaller player groups (Flotillas), but the core resides on the official Discord. Wolfpack Community is welcoming, helpful, and eager to show the ropes to newcomers. We need every single new player to grow and keep this awesome game alive.

Is the game difficult to learn?
Although some aspects of the game might have a steep learning curve, some other roles are quite easy to pick up. If you have knowledge in U-boat warfare, or if you have a history in Silent Hunter, it all should be a piece of cake. But even if you're completely new to the genre, steering and diving are fairly easy to learn. Most players take it step by step, learning every role after one another. Some players fully commit their careers to engine operations or support roles, or to be a proud and capable captain. Even Morse radio is endorsed by a small section of players. Wolfpack can be a commitment, it's very easy to get glued to the game and spend hundreds or even thousands of hours playing. You'd be surprised how many hours some dedicated people invested into Wolfpack, even though the game stays in the backshadow of the mainstream genres.

Is there damage control or flooding implemented?
As mentioned before, actual damage control is on the roadmap. Flooding your boat however is very much possible through the main hatch and the engine intakes, which will require the use of the Bilge pump, and some work on your engines.

Are warships playable?
No, not yet. It is on the roadmap though, the Flower class corvette is currently being worked on. But there are still a lot of questions ahead how this may change gameplay, or when it'll be added.

Are there airplanes in the game?
No, but they're coming in the next update.

Will the game be released to consoles?
That is highly unlikely.
After you buy
How do I set up a game?
All you need to do is create a lobby, and set your preferred settings. I highly advise making your lobby password protected, and share the password at a trustworthy place, or with your friends only.

What difference does year make?
It changes the convoy's size, but nothing else really.

Can I solo play the game?
It is possible, but keep in mind, you will be missing out on the best part of the game: human co-operation and interaction. AI bots are available for your engines (Automatic engines), and for your crew members as well. The bot interfaces are accessable with keys 1, 2, 3 on your keyboard.

What are the detection ranges?
~5500m during day, and ~1900m during night. Your aspect to the enemy and the fog level may allow you to go even closer than this. The moonlight is purely cosmetic, won't make a difference.

How do I hit ships?
You need to identify the target, get target speed, Angle on the Bow, distance from target, and input all of these into the Torpedo Data Computer (TDC), which can be found in the conning tower. Also make sure to set the proper running depth for your torpedo. To find out more about data gathering, please visit some other detailed Steam guides, specifically created for this purpose, or discuss this in the official Wolfpack Discord.

How do I reload the torpedoes?
On the torpedo screen, which can be opened by clicking in the top right corner of the TDC. Simply drag and drop torpedoes into the tubes. Top left tube is number one, bottom right is tube four.

Can I reload torpedoes manually in the torpedo room?
Unfortunately, no. Maybe in the future.

What does it mean to "safe the TDC"?
It means putting the distance to target to maximum (and the target speed as well if you have 30 knot steam torpedoes loaded!), which will deliberaty create an impossible solution, thus preventing an accidental torpedo launch.

What is the small horseshoe/magnet icon over the torpedoes?
It changes between impact and magnetic pistol. The small x next to the magnet means impact pistol.

What is the difference between electric and steam torpedoes?
Electric torpedoes have fixed 30kts running speed and limited range, while steam torpedoes can be set between 30/40/44kts speeds, allowing distancese between 6 to 10km. Steam torpedoes leave a trail though, which can be detected by the enemy!

My air reserves are running low, how do I refill it?
The Junkers air compressor can be found left of the stern torpedo tube.

The lights in the boat went out while operating the Electric engines, what happened?
The Electric engine circuits are protected by two circuit breakers (one for each side). Their locations are marked by high voltage signs, where you can restore them. If you have trouble finding the breakers, I suggest looking up and engineering guide on Steam or Youtube.

How do I switch to red crosshair in the periscopes?
CTRL+mouse wheel, or + / - key on the numeric keypad.

How do I open the ingame distance overlay?
It should be key E by default, but all the necessary keys are listed in Options -> Keyboard.

What is the horizontal table for?
It is possible to measure distance with the horizontal degrees of the periscopes, but you need to be at 90° AoB of your target.
Troubleshooting
I can't see my friend's lobby!
First of all, make sure you both are on the same version of the game. Have the lobby distance on Worldwide, and password on Show. Turn off your VPN, and check if your firewall lets the game and Steam through.
Also check if you have accidentally banned each other in the game by opening banlist.xml at:
Steam\steamapps\common\Wolfpack\Wolfpack_Data\Userdata\#######\

My microphone isn't working in the game.
You microphone has to be set as the default device in Windows Device Manager. If your mic is picked up by Windows, or Discord, it should be fine in the game as well. Find the proper Push-to-talk button in Keyboard settings. If you're pressing the proper button, a speaker icon should appear in the botton left corner of the game.

I can't load my Workshop missions.
Workshop missions are broken on version Beta-beta.

I can't seem to get the proper range for target ships.
The height measure tool is inaccurate on version Beta-beta. The mast height data is correct though.

I'm stuck on the ship data screen in the identified ships list.
Remove the ship from your ID list, that will drop you back to the previous screen.
Final words
If you're hesitating whether to buy or not, I encourage you to join the official Wolfpack Discord, and show up for a game event as an observer. That way, you'll be able to see what to expect precisely. By creating this FAQ, my sole intention was to provide a bit of insight and information about the game's current state, not to give you a push in any direction. Currently (as of mid-2025), the game has several issues, but IT IS playable, and being worked on. Slowly, but surely. I suggest avoiding any kind of bad rumours, negativity or bitterness you might encounter regarding development or the game itself. As we know, it is impossible to satisfy everybody.

If you decide NOT TO BUY the game for now, I suggest following the monthly updates to see where the development progresses and what the future brings.
If you decide TO BUY, you are most welcome in the Community, and I sincerely hope that you're going to have a great time!

Hello yall, this might not be the correct place for it, however if you happen to speak to any of the devs, I do have a small request. When you click on the map table (navigation station), you can set the map to any color you like, for example red map when the red lights come on, or blue map, yellowish white old paper looking map. If it is possible I would like to be able to save 2 preset colors for the map table that switch automatically when the red light is turned on, or turned off. For immersion of course, but no big deal, good the way it is if its too much of a computer hiccup. Thanks.
