Prophecy Optional Waves is important to put into, but beware.
It's really easy to overwhelm yourself with too big of a waves of enemies if you overestimate your troops's capabilities, striking a good balances of optional waves is honestly one of the biggest play you need to make when you playing your run. Couple tips i have is for the first prophecy have at most one optional wave, then have only essential waves before the boss appear so you have more time to replenish your troops.

Getting Advance Production as soon as you can.
A lot of Tier 2 and 3 troops require materials like Iron Bars, Fuels. So anytime you come across optional waves that give Advance Production as reward, consider always getting those first. The earlier you set up your Advance Production the easier time you'll have to transition into Tier 2 and 3 troops. Also lookout for Advance Production inside the shops, it is almost always ideal to get these before artifacts (unless it is some seriously good artifacts).
Magic School/College is actually better than you think.
It is a bit of a investment to build this two facilities but as spells have some tremendous effect in the battlefield, its honestly a worthwhile investment if you have a good amount of Crystal, doubly so if you get a upgrade to choose the spells from the facilities. Why you ask? After the spell completed a cycle it stays as a reward for you to choose on the side, so you technically can have more than 6 spells ready for you to kitchen sink the boss, or make prophecy waves much easier. (i once had 9 spells reward on the side, the boss legit stood no chances).
A cheeky trick if you have the Goose Rider artifact.
One of the legendary artifact is spawning temporary Goose Rider each time a wave arrive. Temporary troops are still consider your troops, so if you just so happens to have a Goose Hydra Nest and a way to obtain meat, well, you can get yourself some *almost* free big ducks (at least before the Goose Rider run in and get themselves killed, don't worry tho, the cycles simply stops if the Goose Rider die before the trainning complete so the next time they spawn you can get that Goose Hydra.)
I hate that red debuff tile.
Every run you'll have a random red debuff tile in your kingdom, don't you hate that? I do, so i cover it with the starting Tile Enchanter over it.

That's it for now, i'll update the post more if i found more tips down the line. Goodluck, your majesty.

@LazyLoz, i haven't try to do that achievement yet but i think you're on the right path, there's a king that benefit a lot from using spells so that probably helps too.

Have you done the deforestation achievement? any advice? I was thinking my best bet would be magical spells, legendary predominantly for the chance of the tornadoes and perhaps the wood council member that gives the wood chop spell. Any insight would be great! 2 achievements left :D

Lastly, basic Research Table isn't going to cut it until you unlock Sophy to research Tier 2 Resources tile, still, even without using Sophy and Research Table i could still beat the run just fine. For now i'm using Automation (whatever that advisor is named) for early to mid-game basic resources problem, with 10 forest and 10 small wheat farm it will last me until i found Tier 2 resources tile just fine.

Advance Production is optimal in most cases sure, however Flour and Iron Bar sell for 3 Gold for the cost of 1 basic resources, just that alone could help upgrading to lvl3 gaze significantly faster. On top of that getting Advance Production early give you a better idea, and better head start of how to build your Tier 2/3 troops. Rather than get your Tier 3 troops blueprints first before hoping the corresponding Advance Production shown up in prophecy reward or in shop, i'd already have some material waiting to spawn my Tier 3 immediately after getting the blueprint.

Another thing is the red tiles, yes while you can just slap Well on it and call it a day, knowing you can cover it up with the tile enchanter is why i put that into the guide, there's already couple instances where i choose the legendary artifact that spawn 3 legendary tile and it spawn some next to my red tile. So i can just cover the red tile up with my starter tile enchanter to use the space.

I disagree with some of what you said @Pilesformiles, Having easier time in first prophecy let's your early game start more smoothly rather than smashing your head trying to send out whatever Tier 1 troops you get from the first reward. Sure trading castle hp for some early game optional reward are a viable strats, but i personally dislike the extra micro managing of send troops back to garrison then back later. As for empty wave before boss is to have garrison full to ready for the boss fight, if you burn too many troops just before the boss arrive chances are you'll face the boss without full strength thus dragging the fight longer.

You should always be sending every wave if possible. The real strategy is to use your hp to soak damage so you can always get optimal rewards. The trick is to always have extra units garrisoned. Also, don't waste resources replacing the red tiles. You can literally just put unused buildings on it. It's also not always optimal to get advanced productions just because you're offered them. You have to be aware of your resources vs future demands. Many of your runs will end just because you run out of basic resources. The research tables don't cut it once you get to higher difficulties. You have other mechanics you have to deal with that you absolutely cannot ignore. All of these tips are basically obsolete once you really get into the game. Wouldn't recommend this guide. Other than how important it is to build spells, I think that one is kind of a no brainer though.

you can move buildings around by shift-clicking them and dragging them around
