Random Quest

描述
You play this guy who is on his way home from work one day when he decides to pick up a ringing payphone. The payphone teleports him to a strange place. Because of course it does. Hopefully, you can escape and find your way back home!

BE NICE TO THE MELON!

---

This is a short campaign mod first released pre-workshop, around 2008. Now it is here on the workshop, supported by both original authors! Some more work was done on the mod around 2016, but that was never released. Then it kinda got forgotten. I didn't think I had it anymore, but I randomly (heh) found it lying around on an old hard drive. So here it is!

---

NOTES YOU SHOULD PROBABLY READ
----------------------------------------------------------

This mod originally had some extra code for some features.

Unfortunately these features are impossible to get working in the Workshop version of the mod.

1. The inventory system (most of the time)

Thankfully it was a fake inventory system. If it had been real, we'd be really screwed.

In MOST* of this mod, when you pick up some items, they disappear a moment later. You are then carrying that item. Originally, there were some custom icons that would appear on screen to show you that you were carrying items. The icons no longer work because they relied on small bits of custom code. You will just have to remember the items you pick up. When you pick them up, they typically enable you to then use something else in the map. Like, picking up a key lets you open a door you couldn't before.

*see note on final level below

2. The smoke monsters

There were some smoke monsters. A bit like the one in the TV show "Lost". They used to harass you in the maze level. They are not there now, unfortunately. If you find a later level that feels a bit empty, just imagine they are there....

3. A new weapon

There used to be a powerful laser weapon, this was used for one particular battle. Because the new weapon doesn't appear anymore, the encounter became basically impossible.

So, I had to change the fight. It's the one where you see a lot of legless zombies. You'll know it when you see it. They didn't used to be zombies. It's not as much fun as it was before, but unfortunately the laser weapon just can't be put back in for the Workshop version. Sorry.

4. A puzzle

The smoke monsters I mentioned earlier were also involved in a puzzle. This doesn't work anymore for the same reasons. When you find a piano, this is it. I left it there just as scenery.
You don't need to do anything with it anymore.

NOTES ON THE FINAL LEVEL
--------------------------

The way you pick up and carry objects goes back to normal HL2 style in the final level.

Reason is, that level was one of the maps I worked on for a separate sequel. At least, that's what I thought at the time. I built it different, not knowing it was eventually going to be part of this mod.

I didn't use the same inventory rules in the sequel maps, in fact the last map wouldn't be finish-able at all if it used that inventory method.

But I still wanted to include it here as it's quite fun I think - so, just so you know. Suddenly you'll be carrying items around again. You'll know you're on the final level!

The last level is also a bit more jank-tastic than the others and it's possible to softlock it more easily than the rest.

The main one is, if you drop the green gem while crossing the bridge, you might be stuck, depending on where it lands. Make a manual save when you find that gem.

Other mods that add or change game sounds
--------------------------------------------------------------

If the voice acting in this mod doesn't work for you, it is being caused by conflict with another mod. Any other mod which adds or changes game sounds may overwrite the sounds manifest file for this mod.

If you can pinpoint specific mods which are in conflict, post their names in comments below and I can look at making compatibility patches.

For the easiest, most trouble-free experience with this mod, disable all other mods before playing.

Thanks! I am glad you liked it :-) I am working on another mod, but I can't currently make any promises about when it will be ready for release. It probably won't be called Random Quest 2, but it is a spiritual successor to this mod in many ways. There is still a lot to do, so it may take awhile.

Yes, it's just going to take longer due to the current state of the RQ source materials, for reasons caused by the unstructured way RQ was developed over a long period of time. The recent Workshop cut I guess I could upload to moddb relatively quickly, but for the real moddb update I need to restore all the cut content that uses custom code, and unfortunately due to some mistakes I've created extra work for myself there. But yes, it is coming, as soon as I can find the time.

It's "BlockMan" by Kevin MacLeod. Except slowed down. You can listen to the original version of the song here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Li8xQj-JD6I
