Downloading and using DxWnd
This is a guide to fix an issue I was having with the game resolution messing up the models in conversations. The information here partially lifted from a sourceforge discussion thread linked here [sourceforge.net] but serves the purpose of easily walking someone through each step, with the assumption that they don't know anything about DxWnd (which I also know very little about other than using it to play Sherlock Holmes: The Mystery of the Mummy).

So, you launch your game and and start your first conversation to find that their face is half cut off the frame. At first you think it might be a resolution issue and maybe even find that the game's aspect ratio is not the same as your monitor and assume that's the culprit, but I assure you that you can run the game with your desired aspect ratio with no issues.

(note: While the resolution is what's messing up the models, it isn't because the image is being cut off. I don't go into this here, but I found it very interesting and suggest you read the original thread!)

To fix this we need to launch the game through a program called DxWnd so we can make some adjustments.

  1. Search DxWnd and go to SouceForge ( here [sourceforge.net])

  2. Dowload the latest version of DxWnd

  3. Go to downloads folder, right-click and Extract All...

  4. Open the extracted folder, right-click dxwnd application and Run as administrator (note: please ensure that the game is not open at this point)

  5. At this point, a small white window should have opened. Right-click in the blank window and press Add.

  6. Click the ... next to Path and find your game application. This should be found at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sherlock Holmes The Secret of the Silver Earring or something similar. Select the application and press Open.

  7. Follow the same steps listed above for the Launch pathway.

  8. Feel free to name your file at this point (I suggest Sherlock Holmes: The Silver Earring as a title)

  9. Make your way to the Video section along the top bar.

  10. Under Screen resolution, tick the Fix aspect ratio box. The default resolution chosen should work fine.

  11. From there, click OK. You should see you game with the title you've given it in your window now.

  12. Launch and enjoy!

I really hope this helped and made the game more accessible for those less technologically inclined and made it so the first puzzle in the game isn't why everyone is so damn tall.
