Here you will find complete instructions on how to install and play American McGee's Alice on your PC or laptop running Windows 11. These instructions are suitable for installing American McGee's Alice on modern PCs and laptops.

1. Be sure to install the .Net Framework 3.5 package on your computer, because the game will not work without it. It can be easily found on Google on the Microsoft website. Or you can use the following link to download this package: .Net Framework 3.5 package [www.microsoft.com]

2. Go to Control Panel → Programs and Features → Turn Windows features on or off. Check and enable the following boxes if they are not already checked:

• Next to .Net Framework 3.5
  
• Next to Legacy Components and next to DirectPlay, which is located inside the Legacy Components setting.

3. Purchase and install the game “Alice Madness Returns” from the Steam store. Without purchasing and installing this game, “American McGee's Alice” will not work either.

4. After installation, launch Alice Madness Returns once, enter any profile name, then click “Apply” and exit the game.

5. Download the archive with the game “American McGee's Alice” from the following link: Link 1 [www.dropbox.com] or this one: Link 2 [drive.google.com]

6. Unzip the archive so that the folder named “Alice1” is located in the “common” folder next to the “Alice Madness Returns” folder.
Note: if you have not changed the drive and folder for installing games in Steam, then it will most likely be located at “C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common”.

7. Go to the folder at “C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Alice Madness Returns\AliceGame\Config” and find the file named “DefaultEngine.ini”, open it with Notepad and find the following lines (they are usually located at the end of the file):

[AliceGame.AliceGameEngine]
Alice1Path=..\..\..\Alice1\bin
GisSpecialPCEdition=TRUE

Make sure that the GisSpecialPCEdition parameter is set to TRUE, not FALSE!
If the Alice1 folder is located inside the common directory and next to the Alice Madness Returns folder, then you do not need to change anything in the line Alice1Path=..\..\..\Alice1\bin. However, if you unpacked Alice1 directly into the “Alice Madness Returns” folder, then the path in “config.cfg” will need to be changed to “Alice1Path=..\..\Alice1\bin” or, alternatively, you can manually move the Alice1 folder one directory up to the “common” directory.

8. Go to the folder at “C:\Users\[Your UserName]\Documents\My Games\Alice Madness Returns\AliceGame\Config” and open the “AliceEngine.ini” file using Notepad. Find the following lines there and check that they are exactly the same as in the previous case (they are also at the very end of the document):

Alice1Path=..\..\..\Alice1\bin
GIsSpecialPCEdition=TRUE

9. Add a shortcut to the alice.exe game to your desktop. Right-click and select Create -> Shortcut from the context menu and specify the path to the file named “alice.exe”. In your case, this file will most likely be located at “C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Alice1\bin\alice.exe”. In the next step, when you are prompted to specify a name for this shortcut, enter the following name: “alice.exe” if it has not been automatically entered in this field. After creating the shortcut, right-click on it and go to Properties, then find the word “Target” and add the following parameter to the existing text in the input field on the right: -RunningFromAlice2, separated by a space. The text you will then see in the “Target” field should look something like this: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Alice1\bin\alice.exe -RunningFromAlice2

10. Double-click on the game shortcut you created to launch it. At this stage, you may see an overly large image of the game opening in windowed mode, and it may be very difficult to make out any words or options due to their excessive size. Don't worry, everything is fine and this is how it should be the first time until you manually adjust the necessary settings in steps 11 and 12 of this instruction. Therefore, at this stage, simply close the current window with the game “Alice.exe”.

11. Go to: “C:\Users\[Your UserName]\Documents\My Games” and open the folder named “American McGee's Alice”. Inside, you will find the file we need, “config.cfg”, which we must open using Notepad. Find the following parameter values in the document and change them: seta r_mode "5" to seta r_mode "3", then save the document and close it.

12. After that, find another file with the same name, “config.cfg”, located at “C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Alice1\bin\base”, and make the following changes to it as well:
- change the value of the parameter seta r_mode "5" to seta r_mode "3"
- Change the value of seta r_fullscreen "0" to seta r_fullscreen "1"
#optional setting, performed if you want to run the game in full-screen mode instead of windowed mode

After changing these parameters, be sure to save the document so that your changes are saved.

The result you should get after completing all the steps described above: double-click on the shortcut on the desktop named “alice.exe”, the game should start in 1024 x 780 graphics mode, and all words and symbols inside the game window or in full-screen mode will then be clearly visible to you, after which you can start playing the game.


If you manually changed the folder on drive C: for installing games in Steam settings, or changed the drive with the folder for installing games, for example, replacing it with drive D: with the “Games” directory, then in your case, the path to the config.cfg file specified above in the instructions may look something like this: “D:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Alice Madness Returns\AliceGame\Config”. This means that in this case, you will have to figure out where exactly your “common” folder with all your Steam games is installed, and only then proceed with all the above instructions, replacing only the path to your common folder.
