How to avoid soft-locking character routes!
由 Skypianer 制作
Ever been totally invested in your fave character’s route, hours in into your save file only to realize... you made a choice three hours ago that soft-locked that character and now you’re stuck in No Romance Land™? I made this guide here to try and save you the headache (and heartbreak) by walking you through how not to accidentally softlock yourself out of some character routes and endings as best as I can. Spoilers are hidden, but be very careful to not to spoil yourself!

Mind that some character's routes bugs can be avoided, but others will have to wait until the developers drop a hotfix to patch it out.

Hope it helps! If you know something that's not on the guide, please let me know and I'll add it!

General Tips to Avoid Soft-Locking Routes
1. Save before any important decision / dialogue.

Before speaking to any of the problematic characters, do a manual save. If you notice that the dialogue is looped, the character disappears out of nowhere or if you simply can't advance the quest — load your previous save immediately before it's too late. This is pretty useful if you're following a guide on how to answer the questions and the option you're looking for isn't appearing for you.

2. Avoid starting new routes before finishing the bugged characters' routes.

It's best to focus on the characters that are giving you problems first until patches are available, as they may crash or give you an unintended ending if you start other characters' routes.

I'm talking about Celia, Florence, and Wallace (who can be locked out if you complete Lyric's route) or Jacques (whose romance ending options won't be visible if you unlock Beau first).

3. Do NOT realize anyone until you have all the characters' endings

This one's quite obvious, but don't turn anyone into a human until you're 100% sure they don't have any other unfurnished business with another character's storyline. Skylar will warn you about this most of the time—but there are plenty of other times where she won't, and will leave your save soft-locked, preventing you from getting the true ending.

Characters you should Avoid
You should try to avoid meeting these characters if you don't want to soft-lock others:
  • Lyric. I'm not too sure if it'll soft-lock other character's routes if you start their questline — but one thing's for sure, and that is that if you finish their questline, all the Book Club's quests will be automatically soft-locked — and that includes Florence, Celia and Wallace.

Lyric's quest can also be locked by Mac if you finish their questline before Lyric's!

And it can also be bugged if you choose any other option than all of the first options for the novel's plot — mainly forcing you to choose one option if you want to finish Lyric's quest line.

  • Beau. If you start her questline — or even meet her before Jacques — the game will automatically force you out of seeing Jacques's second day interaction.

  • Stella. She can easily soft-lock Florence and Celia's questline about her pyramid scheme.
Characters you should Prioritize
You should try to prioritize meeting these characters if you don't want to soft-lock others — these characters can easily break!
  • Jacques Pierrot. You can easily miss his Love Ending if you are not careful enough.

  • Florence and Celia. Probably the most buggy pair of characters of them all, sadly.

  • Bobby Pin. Although it has been already patched out, you should keep an eye on Bobby — some players had previously reported her being missing from the location she should be in.
Known bugs and how to (hopefully) avoid them
  • Lyric

Problem: If you progress with their story, you'll block everyone who's part of the "Book Club," whom they ask for feedback on the book they've written with you. This club includes Celia, Florence, and Wallace.

Possible fix: I'm not too sure if this soft-lock is triggered just by starting their quest, but I'm sure that if you end it, you'll end up in soft-lock. Just be careful and avoid them until you achieve an ending with the other members of the Club.

Problem: Lyric's route is soft-blocked after reaching an ending with Mac.

Possible fix: Don't finish Mac's questline before Lyric's. I know — it feels like walking on eggshells, but if you want all the endings you need to do it... as frustrating as it may be.

  • Jacques Pierrot

Problem: If you unlock and talk to Beau before he does, the game will never show you the option to get his romance ending in your last conversation with him, after the Quest against Isolde.

Possible fix: Many people find it impossible to get his romantic ending; don't unlock Beau until you finish the second conversation with Jacques—always choosing the options to flirt with him.

If you've done it right, after showing you his new giant cockroach army there should be a third option to answer him, similar like "I've come to claim a pirate's heart".

(The 30-minute quest dialogue options don't matter for Jacques's ending.)

  • Koa

Problem: His dialogue about giving you lint is looped.

Possible fix: Koa will repeat the dialogue where he gives you a piece of lint once, but this doesn't block anything. Just be patient, and he'll continue as normal the next day.

  • Daisuke

Problem: He doesn't appear unlocked. His name appears as "???", nor does he appear in the Date-A-Dex after speaking to him.

Possible fix: If you chose anything "..." in the first conversation, chances are Daisuke won't be unlocked in your "Love Pokédex".

This fixes itself, so don't worry — you just have to reach an ending with him, and then everything will appear.

  • Kopi

Problem: Their conversation about serving you coffee is on loop.

Possible fix: It seems like a bug — but it isn't! Interestingly, Kopi works like this. You have to order each coffee until you exhaust all the dialogue options (about two per coffee type); once you do so and order it a third time, Kopi will give you a test to see if you've been paying attention.

If you get two of the three quizzes right, you can advance to the Love/Friend Ending. If you fail more than two, it will send you to the Hate Ending.

  • Beau

Problem: Her route blocks the Love Ending of Jacques Pierrot.

Possible fix: Simply don't talk to her or unlock her until you've exhausted Jacques Pierrot's dialogue options.

  • Abel

Problem: Dialogue on loop despite having spoken to every table in the house.

Possible fix: Abel has three special interactions with other characters at three tables in particular, and you may be missing the second conversation (which is the one that repeats once you've spoken to him). They are:

• The nightstand in your room.
• The dining room table.
• The table on the second floor.

Talk to these tables until the dialogue repeats, and you shouldn't have any problems.

  • Florence and Celia

Problem: Looping dialogue.

Hoo boy. This is, personally, the most annoying bug in the game right now, as there are so many things that can block them that it's not clear what causes them.

If you complete Lyric's quest, you'll not only be blocked from the paths of these two characters—Stella can also block their quests!

Possible fix: To avoid this I recommend either getting the Love Ending where you date both of them at the same time, or activating the Pyramid Scheme quest BEFORE unlocking Stella.

So far, the only thing that's worked for me is getting the polyamorous Ending with both of them, whether you choose the friends option or decide to date both of them at the same time it doesn't matter.

I haven't seen anybody successfully finish the air bottle quest in the full version of the game.

  • Gaia

Problem: This character is already fixed in the latest hotfix — but issues with her dialogue looping are still being reported.

Possible fix: Gaia requires you to introduce her to al least 7 or 8 dateables from another country.

The key is to NOT to introduce them to her all at once; if you've already done so, when she asks if you have any new stories, say yes, and then immediately tell her you don't have any more.

Another alternative is to go little by little, and introduce her to 2 or 3 characters at a time.

  • Phoenicia

Problem: This character is already fixed in the latest hotfix — but issues with her dialogue looping are still being reported.

Possible fix: The only thing that seems to work is talking to her at least once a day at every possible hour and advance enough character quests so she can gossip about them, until you get a new interaction.

  • Stella

Problem: The pyramid sheme quest does not seem to progress.

Possible fix: I'd say to avoid this character until you start the Celia and Florence quest, but honestly? I'm not too sure if that's going to work. If you are going towards an all love ending playthrough, I highly recommend you not to go this route — as this will either get you a hate ending for ending her scheme, or if you have enough SPECS, reach an agreement with the mayor which she won't be very happy about.

  • Zoey Bennett

Problem: Her information doesn't seem to be updated in the Date-A-Dex, nor does she appear after the Seance Ritual. If you experience this bug, you won't get the Steam achievement linked to this. There is currently no way to get this achievement without repeating the ritual, sorry.

Possible fix: After completing the ritual, save and restart the game. This should cause both the information and the item to appear on the map the next day.

However, you'll now need to use the glasses to talk to her, just like any other Dateable.

  • Curt and Rod

Problem: Dialogue on loop despite having checked all curtains in the house.

Possible fix: The first curtain where you talk with both of them won't count towards the "curtain A' Dex" until you talk to them there for a second time! If you still can't manage to get their final conversation, keep reading.

All dateables seem to have some sort of "main" location, even if the game doesn't imply it, code-wise it seems like so. After making sure you've talked to all curtains on the house, go to the curtains located on the main entrance and talk to them there. That did the trick for me and some friends.

  • Mac

Problem: Their route blocks Lyric's.

Possible fix: Simply avoid finishing their route before reaching an end with the writer.

Known bugs without solution (for now)
  • Beverly

Problem: Looping dialogue.

Possible fix: This is possibly another bug that, as of today, cannot be "fixed," even if you prioritize Beverly as a character... So we'll have to wait.

If you find yourself stuck with her conversation, try using other dialogue options, talking to her at a different time, or returning to a previous save.

Hopefully after that big Patch 3, this article will be getting a whole lot shorter.

If you want the prompt to call Washford you have to get first the Love ending with Drysdale! At least, that's what worked for me. Then tell him about Washford wanting to apologize to him

Stepford
On the night before his competition, don't do anything sexual or he will lose and you are locked out of the Love ending.

Getting Washford and Drysdale together
Also extremely difficult and I honestly don't even know exactly where I messed up. Friends with both but I don't get the prompt to tell Drysdale to call Washford :(

That's odd, I never got Rebel's storyline glitched despite having done it three times already (thank you random bug that doesn't let me realize the last dateable needed to reach the true ending of the game).

What seems to break the loop for many is talking to her in soft and caring way, until she breaks out of her tough persona and goes away saying she "needs time to think"... but if you got stuck on day 2, I imagine they just re-appear on the bathroom again :(

Is there any workaround to the Rebel bug where you get stuck talking to them in the bathroom on a loop of the day 2 dialogue which ends in them "poofing" away? It's not possible to reach ANY ending with Rebel now, who has the final sass points I playthrough getting endings with 98 people and realising 65 of the characters but thanks to the Lyric and Rebel glitches, I literally can't progress

Me and a lot of other people are finding that if you try to do Maggie's investigation after progressing past Scandalabra's polishing cutscene, it doesn't give you the option to interrogate him :(( idk the solution I think you'd have to just complete Maggie's thing before Scandalabra

Oof, that sucks to hear. I already updated the guide! Hope it gets fixed soon :(

for lyric, make sure to also avoid finishing mac's storyline... i romanced mac before finished lyric, and now i can't progress with the book publication because mac will only sweet-talk me :(
