The Montana Highway Patrol was established in 1935 after Montana led the nation with a 74% increase in highway fatalities. Out of 1,500 canidates, 24 were chosen to attend the MHP's first Montana Highway Patrol Academy, and began patrolling the highways on May 1st of 1935.

In 1988, they became the first state highway patrol in the nation to become nationally accredited. The accreditation process took three years to complete and was considered a critical element in enhancing the professionalism of the Montana Highway Patrol.

Every year, the 243 State Troopers driver more than 5.5 million miles, respond to over 70k calls, and issue more than 85k arrest tickets. The agency currently has 4 specialty divisions, Special Response Team (SRT), Executive Protection (EP), Criminal Interdiction Team (CIT), Strategic Enforcement Traffic Team (SETT), and a few aviation divisions.
