How the AI detects you
This game has good stealth mechanics, but you have to get how they work in order to play them. Enemies have a cone of vision like in reality or other games, but can also hear you even if you're outside of their vision. So, in order not to be seen, you have to avoid their cone of vision and also avoid being heard by them.

Be aware that alerted enemies will scout for you, and can see you from far away.
How not to be detected
In order to avoid detection, you not only need to be aware of the enemies cone of vision. You also have to be silent while moving.

In Dagger Directive, you move at the top speed by default (if you're using a keyboard), and that attracts the enemies' attention. In order not to be heard, you need to either:
  • Walk, holding the shift key, or if you're using a controller, move slowly using the analogue stick.
  • Move while crouching.
  • Crawl (move while prone).
  • Move while aiming, which will also make you move slower no mater if you're standing or crouching.

As long as you do any of those types of movement, and stay out of their vision, the AI won't detect you and you'll be able to sneak on them, or sneak away from them.

Now you've mastered the art of infiltration, godspeed m'boy (or gal, or nb)

One thing i've noticed is that smoke grenade can effectively be used to sneak up or sneak past NPCs. Chuck a smoke and stab swiftly.
One more thing is you are completely invisible while proning IN GRASS (even a little grass can help). Crawling in grass to approach enemies is a viable stealth strategy.
Lastly, melee is more silent than suppressed weapons.

Something important for snipers to note is that some enemies will start shooting in the general direction you shot from (dunno how much this changes if you don't have a silencer)! Though sometimes they were able to track me if I was under 300~ near them, and I later found they had a scope on their gun, so that possibly causes them to have increased vision too.
So take a shot, move far away, and take another! (though you should also kill whoever the enemy sends to catch you as they might surprise you later)
