The Matanikau Tank Attack [Mission]

October 23rd, 1942 just after sundown. The Japanese Army's 4th Infantry Regiment under General Nomasu Nakagama attacked the Marine line at the mouth of the Matanikau River with nine tanks of the 1st Independent Tank Company consisting of seven Type 95 Ha-Go light tanks and two Type 97 Chi-Ha medium tanks. The only crossing point was a small sandbar at the mouth of the river emptying out into the ocean. The opposite bank was held by 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine's under Lt. Col. William N. McKelvy. They would stop the Japanese attack with the help of multiple Marine Artillery Batteries and a well-fortified line of defense on the opposite bank with Machine Guns and 37mm AT tank guns covering the sand bar. This battle, while short, set the stage for Oka's attack on the ridge that was to be held by Herman Henneken of the 7th Marine's which would create a snowball effect causing the rollback to effect Col. Chesty Puller in the south end of the line the following night.
