The McDonnell Douglas MD-80 series, nicknamed the "Mad Dog", is an improvement on the popular DC-9 regional jetliner, once a common sight around the United States. Due to efficiency concerns, most MD-80s flying in America have been retired, with a few still flying in the Middle East and South America.
Sunset Airways currently operates 5 MD-83 freighters, converted from former American Airlines MD-80s. A further 10 are awaiting conversion and will be in service by late 2025. These MD-80s will fly high-priority express routes across the United States.
