Kaine's Quck Guide to Crash Solutions

Kaine's Quck Guide to Crash Fixes
(and a couple of handy beginner tips)

This game is riddled with game breaking crashes and bugs. I've encountered all of the ones in this guide and found working solutions to them. This guide is meant to be a quick troubleshooter for the most game breaking crashes/bugs. I added a couple of beginner tips as well, as this might be a guide that new players might need if they're experiencing crashes. I assume some of the solutions might not work for everyone but hopefully they might be of some help to those in need.

Disclaimer: I am not the one coming up with the solutions, other people found them years back. I simply looked into what worked and ended up wanting to make a quick guide here, so steam users can access them faster than searching around the net for working solutions for the crashes.

Random Crashes
I experienced a multitude of random crashes at first. The solution was not to mess with graphical settings, apparently.

The Solution: What caused the problem was that I had set the graphical settings to max at first, but the game didn't like that for some reason so I set it to recommended/standard and the game worked like charm afterwards. Had no more random crashes after that apart from the bugs below. I can probably tune up some graphical settings but I don't want to mess with stuff that works.
Shooting Range Crash (Inside TF 29)
Most likely the very first crash you'll encounter in the game is the shooting range crash that happens when you exit the shooting range after you've done the tutorial in there. The bug is from what I've read related to the inventory. The solution is also the inventory.

The solution: Drop EVERYTHING (yes everything) in your inventory onto the ground just outside the door to the shooting range. It won't disappear when you load in/out of the shooting range. Just drop it all on the ground, go do the tutorial inside the shooting range, then pick it all up afterwards when you complete it and exit the range. It's actually way faster picking the stuff up than dropping it all, just smash your pick-up button and vacuum it all up and you're good to go and explore more of Prague.
The Black Loading Screen (2nd Prague visit, after Golem)
After you've made your way to the very end of mission 7 (Golem City) and seen the cutscene you might encounter this bug where the screen is black and the loading animation is looping forever in the lower right corner, and you see that tree outside your window growing in slow-motion, the only thing you can do is force-quit the game for now. The game should have auto-saved by the super-slow gate you open to get there. Now, it seems that the game doesn't really like it if you have more than 8 cores in your CPU.

The Solution: If you have (very likely) multiple cores in your CPU you need to change how many cores is set for the game in the Windows Task Manager.

STEPS: Start the game so the launcher pops up (don't load up a save, just start the executable), go into the TASK MANAGER, then go into the DETAILS tab, find DXMD.exe, RIGHT CLICK on it and select SET AFFINITY in the drop down menu. Now change it to only run on 8 cores (SELECT 0-7 ONLY) for the game.

Note: Some can probably have half their of their cores selected and make it work which was the original solution I found, but it didn't work for me at all. The only thing that changed was that I could skip the cutscene but I still experienced the loading freeze until I tweaked it and set to only 8 cores instead - and now it works! I'm back in Prague, looting and knocking out everyone with my tranq-gun to celebrate.
Instant Crash At Chikane's Place (3rd Prague visit, after GARM)
The game completely froze the first time when given control to play Adam after exiting the aircraft, and subsequent game restarts and save reloads it always instantly crashes. My mind wandered to the theory that the game isn't really optimal/future-proofed for more CPU cores, and might be related to the previous crash. I was right.

Solution: The solution is the exact same one as the previous one regarding setting core affinity for the executable game file through the Task Manager. Follow the same steps and it will start. Don't worry the game auto-saved so you'll start right next to Chikane by the aircraft.
Gameplay Tips For DX Beginners (No Spoilers)
(That I wish I knew from the start)

Handy Tip 1
If you are a first time player of the game, and you bought a complete edition or similar that include some/all DLC:s. Go to your inventory then look at the left side of the screen. There's a tab that says "STORAGE". That's where your DLC stuff is. I didn't realize this until I've almost finished everything in Prague (1st visit). Hah. Also, be sure you really want to use the consumables, they won't come back in a new game though the weapons will always be there for each new game, so you will always be able to get that elite tranquilizer for each new game.

Handy Tip 2
You can hack the Diagnostics Nodes, they're the red ones that starts countering you if your hack becomes detected by the system. IF you can capture it you will not only successfully complete the hack when you do (meaning you don't have to take any green nodes during the hack) but you will ALSO get all the loot from the Datastores without having to capture them. I didn't realize this until halfway through Golem. *facepalm*.

Handy Tip 3
You can loot cars.

Handy Tip 4
You can store stuff in the three big containers in your apartment, the ones by the TV.

Handy Tip 5
Always take another look in a room before you move on, especially during big missions outside of Prague. Use your vision augment because holy sh*t there's stuff I keep missing since I can't really see the items for all the clutter, and a lot of stuff are hidden.

Handy Tip 6
You can do multiple takedowns with the aug BUT they have to be standing up and close enough to each other in order for it to work, though you likely have to be cloaked when doing so or be very quick reaching them meaning you need good amount of juice to do it. The UI will say something like "Multiple Takedowns" when close enough that you can interact. It is iffy and not always working properly, so save before you do.

Handy Tip 7
Save OFTEN (especially in this game), preferably multiple save files, this should be a given if you play games like Deus Ex, because you can mess up/be locked out of some quests or items by killing/incapacitating a named char/vendor, there might be a bug messing up something that might require a reload, or simply die due to falling down the d*mn manholes, for example.

We all want to give Tars a couple of tranq-shots at first though I'd advise against it, but you do you - it's your playthrough.
