Thing is, their introduction, I've been told first-hand face-to-face at a literature writing meeting some years back- by the guy who wrote the branch of "Star Wars" that they show up in; that was Lucas' idea; they were brainstorming what to do about the Ssi-Ruuk, and every option seemed to be a dead-end for them, so Lucas just plain figured to have these guys come in via a backdoor takeover and just run riot all over the place.
