The Sherman Firefly was a British modification of the American M4 Sherman, fitted with the powerful 17-pounder (76.2mm) anti-tank gun to counter German Panther and Tiger tanks. Developed in 1943 by British engineers, it required significant turret modifications to accommodate the large gun. Entering service just before D-Day (June 6, 1944), the Firefly became a key asset in the Normandy Campaign, as it was the only Allied tank capable of reliably penetrating a Tiger I from long range. Its effectiveness made it a priority target for German forces, leading crews to camouflage its long barrel to resemble a standard Sherman. Notably, in August 1944, a Firefly from the 1st Northamptonshire Yeomanry is credited with killing Michael Wittmann, Germany’s top tank ace, near Saint-Aignan-de-Cramesnil.
