Working easy fix for stutter.
由 Heart In Light 制作
This guide is for people with high refresh rate monitors. Who struggle with stutter in Hogwarts legacy. Its a widespread issue. The game was made for fidelity in mind, for its crafted world being somewhere to really explore. Not for high refresh rates so much.

The Fix, easy, and effective.
You dont need to change anything in your files, or do anything crazy that will cause more issues. Change your monitor to 60hz, and set the game to 60fps with vsync on. And your stutter will be gone.

Its an issue with high refresh rates affecting frame time, even with VRR on or off. Its honestly probably the worst crafted game I have seen for high refresh rate. No fix I have tried online, or found has fixed this issue totally. Its just easier and plays better when you set it to 60hz and just enjoy the game as it is.

This probably doesnt affect everybody, and might depend on the monitor, or gpu thats being used. But I can use my 5700xt underclocked to 1905 and undervolted, and upscale this to 4k with FSR 2 quality settings. With medium everything and high texture and material.

60fps is just easier than fiddling endlessly for fixes that quite honestly, bring their own problems to your gameplay. Just lock it to 60fps, slap on vsync with your panel set to 60hz. And up the settings a bit, and enjoy the visual feast that this game is.

Hope this helps some people get past the stutter, and just enjoy the game they bought. The high refresh rates, do not agree with this title...at all. Variable refresh rates, are common now. 60hz panels, havent been a real thing outside of TV's and very low end monitors, for a long time. This is something that was definitely not taken into account for this game.

Variable refresh rate, should sync perfectly with a 60fps game. But this game, is all over the place. Just do yourself a favor, and set your monitor to 60hz so you can enjoy the game. It will be smooth and not stutter anymore.

And no, leaving your monitor any higher than 60hz, will not stop the stutter. The higher the refresh rate, the more stuttery it will get with or without VRR or Vsync on. I have tested this. And it actively gets worse with higher refresh rate panels.

Hope this helps someone. God bless, and Peace to you.
If you really want 120fps.
If its a must have for you. To get 120fps.

This game, does not play well with VRR. But if you set your panel to 60hz/120hz, or whatever in between you are capable of pushing fps wise. You can get smooth nearly stutter free performance.

Its when you have VRR enabled, and have windows set to say 144hz, or 165hz ect. And turn on VRR, and want to get say 120fps, or 90 fps. The stutters come in hard.

Lossless Scaling here on steam, can help older gpus achieve 120fps. Allowing older gpus to go from 60 to 120. But you still must set your windows display setting to 120hz, with VRR on, its much more smooth than doing a solid 60.

I have tried with 144hz, and the stutters come back. There is no middle ground. The game hates VRR and windows settings higher than what the game is pushing.
Fix that darn FOG!!!
The visual problem. THE FOG!!!

A side note, if you hate volumetric fog inside buildings. Go into engine.ini and add this at the bottom. You will keep fog, but the volumetric fog covering the world that covers up the world will be gone. And the game looks far far better without it. Even if the render isnt perfect at a distance, its still worlds better. And you get to keep regular fog.

You have to edit the engine.ini file here. And I set to read only after editing, just so the game doesnt change it.

C:\Users\"YOUR USERNAME"\AppData\Local\Hogwarts Legacy\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor

[/script/engine.renderersettings]
r.fog=1
r.VolumetricFog=0

I posted 2 screenshots to show the difference. They're in different locations. But you can see the massive difference it makes at seeing things in the distance. The kind of world crafting made in this game, was meant to be seen. Not to be covered up with fog so we didnt see bits of pop in. Its to pretty a world to cover up, and it was a major eyesore inside buildings even. The game, is far better without it.

And here, you can see before I changed the fog. How it would affect walking into certain rooms. Before walking fully in, vs being fully in. The fog would increase and cover so much of the visuals.

The game is far more enjoyable without this stuff.

Hope this guide helps you. Peace

This has so far been the best fix for me but there is still stuttering. Can;t seem to get a smooth experience no matter what i do.

Yeah, i ended up leaving the fog on cause it just doesnt look right without it. It still annoys me from time to time but. I would rather have the atmosphere i guess.

I agree. It easily would have become one of my favorite open-world games if it wasn't for the constant stuttering back when I played. Something like that can make or break a game for some people. I reinstalled it a couple of days ago, and it's been enjoyable. Most importantly, playable. There's stuttering here and there, mostly around areas where there's those circular traces of ancient magic, but it's playable. Fingers crossed it'll stay that way until I finally finish the game. Also, you're absolutely right about the fog. I didn't notice it until you mentioned it, and now I can't unsee it. The fog completely dulls everything, especially the view of Hogwarts.

No problem KnitKita. Hope you can finally enjoy the game without all that awful performance issues. It really is a gorgeous game, its a shame its plagued with these issues. But even with them, its still one of the most finely crafted worlds in gaming history.

I uninstalled the game a long time ago because of this problem and never finished it despite really enjoying the world and game play. Gonna pick it up again and try this solution...thank you.

Glad it was helpful, this game was definitely not optimized too well. Was probably one of those "console first" type deals. Despite actually being created on a PC...

This kinda stuff, is why so many people stick to consoles. Performance optimization problems on PC is still trial and error to get a game working as it should sometimes.

DUDE, this fixed the game for me! It made it so much more enjoyable! I remember doing the same thing with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and it worked there too. I'll definitely keep this fix in mind if other Unreal Engine games get annoying. Thank you!
