The long and short of it is that there are 5 blue shards hidden in the main lobby that you need to find and interact with to unlock Max. The guide contains their locations (marked with a red circle on the mini-map for clarity).

That's about it. Once you interact with the last blue shard, The renowned War Mage Max should be playable for you.

Good luck using the war mage that has saved the world from orcs at least three times, and almost destroyed it only once.

PS: You don't have to get these 5 shards in the order specified in this guide.

PPS: Also, they disappear once you've interacted with them, and when you finally unlock Max, an ethereal magic Max replaces him in the Lecture Room.
