Detailed INFO page
First sheet is very important to read, it will help you to read the rest of the excel.

Battle Statistics

How long does the battle take?
Who deals more damage during charge?
Who has best DPS during whole battle?
Who is the most deadly unit?
Ultimate GUIDE

What is the best role for this unit?
What Terrains are better or worse for this unit?

All numbers converted to human language. Take this as highly accurate recommendations.
Terrains
All Terrains and their effects:
  • Open Field = fair conditions
  • Forest = Light units get +5% Defence
  • Sand = 10%/20%/30% less of Attack & Defence, based on their Weight
  • Mud = 0/10%/20% less of Defence, based on their Weight
  • Water = everybody looses 20% Attack

In the excel, you can find unit's performance for each Terrain. Their new ranking and comparison vs average.
Unit Roles
How you should use unit efficiently?
  • Cycle Charger = pull away when Charge Bonus wears off, then charge again
  • Frontline = don't charge with this unit, but utilize defensive stance
  • Flanker = flank enemy, even for the cost of being flanked too, it is worth it here!
but who is simply the BEST?
Open "1v1 Duel" sheet, and sort by "better than Average".
This will answer the question = Who is the strongest unit?
Assuming you just want to right click to charge and wait to see your unit winning.
Details about the RESEARCH
Now you wonder how I came up with the numbers in excel. Here is explanation:
  • Every unit has stats (attack, defence, weapon...)
  • I have app that simulates total war battles = 1 unit versus 1 unit
  • Every dues gives me statistics (kills, damage, time...)
  • Simple math gives me efficiency (e.g. "this unit is 2x better than this")
  • I ran big tournament = all units, everybody vs everybody
  • Each unit gained (or lost) their ELO, just like chess players in real world
  • After tons and tons of rounds, every unit had their stable ELO
  • ELO (exponential value) can be converted to linear value, which I call "Power"
  • Units with double of Power are in game 2x stronger
  • Now that I know which unit has how much Power (aka "true combat potential"), I can sort them in tables
  • Lastly, comparing power vs average gives better look & feel to see how much is this unit powerfill

@Borisanimal yes, the "flanker" role means that unit is doing better in "messy" battles, where every unit is flanked to side by another unit. Than compared to "clean" 1v1 battles, where such flank-resistant units are not using their advantage, and therefore performing worse.
When you see a typical "frontline" unit being labeled as "flanker", then you should avoid 1v1 engagements and try to make a mess in battle line to inflict more Flanked to Side debuffs.
In other words, "Flankers" do worse in fair 1v1 duels, and better when everybody is flanked to side.

Thank you very much for such detailed analyze. Very interesting piece of information. However, can you please explain as I'm a bit confused, why did you put a lot of 1h spear units a flanker role in your excel (eg. Hittite Spearmen)? Cannot get to logic behind. Is it due to unit ability to ignore disadvantage if enemy will outflank them. To sum up, the main point of role - should I try to outflank enemy units with flanker role units from excel or they just have to hold the line on my flanks?

@Azeltorez difference between Flankers from Frontlines is that they do better when both units get "flanked to side". Those units are not efficient for frontline grind, and it is worth it to flank neighbor unit even for a cost of being flanked too. In Flankers case, it gives more penalties to opponent.

Good guide!

I'm wondering what distinguishes Flankers from Frontline units, like, for example, Nuraghe Warriors are ranked as a flanker, and I looked in your battle feedback sheet, and didn't see "Flanker" performance rated as an average, although I might have missed it. It seemed to me like Nuraghe warriors are best as frontline units, so I'm wondering what the difference is

@Eruner
I'm sorry for the misunderstanding. I can't thank enough for your hard work. :)

@Naoki you can filter by Factions (or Roster). That way you can have only Native units displayed, for example. Elites have Elite in roster name, playable factions you know by name, and rest is native

Very informative list! Wish units were categorized with native, faction and elite too.
with that, it'd be easy to search tier 5 native units.
