ALSO BEFORE YOU SHOOT, don't forget to backtrack to where you first found the lever and shoot the dark plywood-looking drain to the left (right next to where the lever first broke off), to drain the sewer water out and get the "cool secret item" that's stuck behind the drain that you can see when you first passed it, thanks to how it shines like any pick-up when its in view.

If you haven't, then be warned that once you shoot the lever, you lock yourself out of that half of the level and can't access that half of the level anymore and you'd have to restart to get the secret item.
