Later British Forces Tuning Pack

Beskrivning
Wish the British Forces in CoH3 were based around Italy 1943-45 instead of the base game British faction's 1942-43 Africa theme? Then this mod may be for you - This tuning pack changes the British Forces non-battlegroup units to those used in Italy 43-45, and removes those that weren't wherever feasible

TL;DR Changes:
  • Changed all possible British Africa unit models from their Desert models to their later green Italy models, as seen in the game's Italy campaign, whilst keeping their existing Africa multiplayer stats (these values aren't being overridden so any future balance changes to the main game should apply to the existing units here as well).
  • Changed unit icons & portraits to match above.
  • Replaced the Crusader with a new unit, the Sherman V - similar to the US M4A1, but it has slightly lower armour (matching the Firefly), ever so slightly different acceleration & speed, has the Crusader's veterancy stat bonuses, and has the Heroic Charge ability. Due to the game's M4A4 hull not having a hull MG attachment point, it does not have a hull MG, but its coaxial MG does higher damage to compensate.
  • Replaced the Grant with the Sherman VC Firefly - a variant of the Polish Firefly, which uses an unused English Firefly voice, cannot get tulips, has the Grant's veterancy stat bonuses, and is locked behind a tech upgrade.
  • Replaced the Matilda with a new unit, the Churchill III, locked behind a tech upgrade in the same manner. This Churchill has better penetration (more akin to a later tank firing 6-Pdr APCBC, if the base early Churchill is firing AP), has the Matilda's veterancy stat bonuses, and has access to an SVDS (APDS) ability. It uses the 'fender' (Heavy Track Armour) appearance, and is immune to Crew Shock. It is also locked behind a tech upgrade.
  • Renamed the M3 Stuart to Stuart III
  • Renamed the existing Churchill IV to the Churchill III (Early), to better match its in-game model
  • Fixed some inaccuracies with the Centaur IV, including removing the hull MG - the Centaur's coax MG has been given additional damage (same as Sherman V) to compensate for the loss of the hull MG

Bonus changes:
  • Renamed the US M4(105) Sherman Bulldozer to M4A3(105) Sherman Bulldozer, to better match its in-game model (it has a large hatch M4A3 hull, if it were an M4 it would have a different engine deck)

I created this mod for my own use as it was rather jarring seeing some early war British units (Matildas, Grants, Crusader IIs) consistently going up against later war Brummbars and Panthers and being seen alongside Archers and 76mm Shermans (and I didn't like all the units' tan desert appearances). This is not a complete rework to make the British forces perfectly accurate, and does not change existing unit stats to match, it just makes the unit roster more authentic to the units present in Italy. As such, besides changing the appearance of all units to those seen in the Italy campaign, the only real changes are to the vehicles produced in the Company Command Post

Vehicles Removed
  • Matilda
Left front line service with the British around the 2nd battle of El Alamein, long before Italy.
  • Grant
Did continue service up to the end of the Tunisia campaign but was being replaced by the Sherman and did not go to Italy except as command tanks and ARVs.
  • Crusader
The Crusader II with the 2-Pounder gun was phased out quickly with deliveries of newer types, the Crusader III with the 6-Pounder did see continued use and fought on into Tunisia, but did not go to Italy.

Vehicles added
  • Sherman V
Known as the M4A4 in US terminology, this was the iconic 'British' Sherman variant, with the British receiving almost the entire production run - in Italy it was at first fairly rare compared to the similar-looking small-hatch Sherman III (M4A2) which was the main type in use by the British at the start, but as deliveries went on it later reached parity during 1944.
  • Sherman VC Firefly
The Firefly conversion applied to the Sherman V, this type made it to Italy later on in 1944 - see this image from 1944[commons.wikimedia.org] for an example.
  • Churchill III
As depicted in CoH3 the Churchill III with its distinctive welded turret and the short L/43 6-Pdr Mark III gun was the main Churchill variant for the 2 Churchill Tank Brigades going into Tunisia, but when the Brigades later deployed to Italy photos suggest most of their tanks were the Churchill IV (these have an all-cast turret, base CoH3's Churchill is incorrectly named) and seemingly always with the long L/50 6-Pdr Mark V gun after the first few battles. However at least 1 Churchill III made it to the Gothic Line battles in September 1944, equipped with the long 6-Pdr Mark V - see IWM NA 18170[www.iwm.org.uk] for an example, where the sharp upper edges and welds of the Mark III turret can be seen. This new Churchill unit has performance based on what this particular tank would have had, with the improved performance of the later 6-Pdr and later APCBC ammo - I've also given it an SVDS (APDS) ability as well as whilst I have not seen evidence either way of its use in Italy, the rounds were in use by Churchill units in NW Europe prior to this time.

Vehicles Kept
  • Daimler Dingo
The Dingo was a particularly successful scout car used by the British all over, including Italy.
  • CMP Truck
The CMP was widely used by the British and is appropriate for Italy, with the exception of the 20mm AA conversion - these conversions were made for the invasion of Normandy due to fears of German air support, and were only deployed there for a relatively short time as the threat never really materialised. However, removing this would result in the British losing any non-battlegroup AA, so I have left it in.
  • Humber III Armoured Car
The Humber Armoured car was widely used and the Humber III as depicted in-game served in Tunisia, however the photos of Humbers in Italy I've seen have all been the 37mm-armed Humber IV which became the standard type. I've seen comments suggesting the Humber III did go to Italy at first though, so it could still be authentic.
  • Stuart III
The Stuart was used as a Recce tank in Italy, often with the turret removed, though in almost all photos the Stuarts seen appear to be the Stuart V with its sloped hull - however at least some earlier Stuarts made it to Italy in 1943, see IWM NA 7706[www.iwm.org.uk] for an example.
  • Bishop
2 Royal Artillery regiments did go to Italy equipped with Bishops in 1943, though these were phased out later on - see IWM NA 7259[www.iwm.org.uk] for an example.

Battlegroups
I have not made any large changes to the battlegroups' units, as they often have a theme distinct from the Italian theatre and changes are impractical - e.g. the Air and Sea battlegroup is clearly D-Day themed with its RMASG Centaur IV, or the Polish battlegroup with its Tulip-equipped vehicles is based on the Coldstream Guards fitting them to their Shermans in NW Europe 1945. So the only change of note here is the change to the Centaur IV to make it more accurate by removing the hull MG (with an improved Coax to compensate).

It's possible these changes may make the Brits a bit unbalanced, your mileage may vary, but from what I've seen playing against the AI it seems okay.

itd be cool if you could reuse the centaur model but replace the 95mm gun with 6pdr and have that be the crusader replacement
Thank you. As a person who understands WW2 weapons, it was painful for me to look at such as M3 stuart, although in the UK they were called Stuart III or Churchill IV, although the IV has a cast turret, and the III is in the game (Thanks that Churchill III has truck protection without it is not beautiful). I hope the mod will continue to improve, but for now, keep 1200 Steam points.

Oh I see, thanks anyway mate.

Cheers all

@ Primm Slim I'd love to edit the campaign but sadly we can't use tuning packs with it currently - removing the Sherman was indeed an odd choice, since until the 25th Tank Brigade arrived in Italy with its Churchills in spring 1944 the British were entirely reliant on Shermans there as their front-line tank (so excluding recce Stuarts etc) - it should have been the Valentine that was removed instead since none went there.

The mod should now match yesterday's CoH3 2.0 update, so Crusader AA and Centaur IV production should now be fixed among other changes - hopefully I didn't miss anything.

Also, it seem that the Crusader AA from the Armor Company cannot be produced at the company command post. Probably an error introduced with update 2.0

Ehi friend can you actually modify the campaign units aswell? For some unknown reason relic decided to swap the British Sherman to a Valentine
