Introduction

Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy is a nostalgic favourite of mine. Every year, I find find so much joy when I revisit for a winter playthrough, and I wanted to ensure everybody else has the best opportunity to enjoy this game to the fullest.

These graphics settings are either from my own extensive comparisons, or are a compilation from other sources, but this guide aims to be a loose assistance to hopefully support you on your adventure~!

I want to help preserve this game, making it easily playable long into the future!
Summary of Settings
Graphics Settings
If you are happy with the settings above, you don't need to read fruther.
Everything below here goes into further and greater detail for the choices made, and what each setting does.

Due to the age of the game and the power of modern hardware, almost all of the settings can be ran on maximum, with zero performance degradation.

Anti-aliasing
Recommended Option: ON
Anti-aliasing smooths the jagged appearance of many objects and assets of Fahrenheit, and also the blending between some objects and terrain.

Decreasing this setting increases the jagged edges of most assets in the game, making everything significantly unplaesent to look at.

Filtering
Recommended Option: Anisotropic 16X
Filtering (better known as Anisotropic Filtering) enhances the quality and clarity of textures on surfaces like floors, increasing the clarity of distant surfaces.

What makes me laugh, is this setting also effects the texture of the menu background.

Environment Mapping
Recommended Option: On
Environment Mapping is an efficient image-based lighting technique to model lighting and shadow effects.

This setting has a much larger effect on the visual quality than shadows. Environment Shadows are baked into this setting. I would not disable this.

Texture Quality
Recommended Option: High
Texture Quality controls the quality of the in-game textures, with only two settings, High and Low.
Lowering the settings has a very minimal, almost unnoticeable decrease in visual quality.

Vertical Synchronization
Selected Option: Off
Vertical Synchronization (better known as VSync) synchronizes your graphics card's frame rate with your monitor's refresh rate to prevent screen tearing.

Front-Buffer Effects
Recommended Option: On
Front-Buffer Effects (better known as Post-Processing) applies bloom, motion blur, and other visual effects.

Enabling this setting notably increases the brightness across the entire game, but makes everything look slightly softer, removing a lot of sharpness and clarity to textures.

Shadows
Recommended Option: On
Shadows are very important to the world of Fahrenheit. In a world covered in snow, the shadows add a much deeper layer of depth.

When comparing ON and OFF in the "Love Lost" Chapter, Shadows only effected Lucas.
Standard and High Definition Comparisons
During any moment in the game, you can switch between Standard Definition (SD) and High Definition (HD) textures by pressing F9.
Some textures are heavily modified and replaced, and others appear to have been automatically processed and "enhanced", only receiving deeper contrast, increased sharpness, and noise removal.

Let's look at a few scenes and compare during the opening 10 minutes.

The Docs Diner sign in the window has been improved with changes, introducing the blue neon circle, but mostly cleaned up.
The logo on the door however, remains the unchanged.
The car textures are refreshed and replaced, but if you look in the background, the buildings receiving no notable changes, a trend which continues throughout the game.
Character texture changes are more evident, mostly only being sharpened instead of recreated.
The texture on the inner-lining of Carla's coat is significantly nicer in the HD textures, with more smearing in the SD textures, but a lot of detail in her face is is lost in the HD textures.
In the distance, the chain link fence looks significantly nicer in HD, but detail in Tyler's textures look much softer in HD. His face just looks smoothed out with detail in clothes and face removed.
The wheels on the police car actually look much nicer in the Standard Definition textures, and again, the buildings display no visible changes beyond an increased sharpness.
Wall, telephone, all the textures are improved, with no changes to any of the models (evident in the phone cable).
The window blinds lost a lot of sharpness.
The Restroom sign received no changes, but the wall looks significantly nicer in HD.
The barstools received no changes at all.
In SD textures, Tyler's textures in the distance look much sharper.
The snow in SD quality blends very well with the recycling bin, but in HD, it looks dirty and misplaced.
The remaster was necessary to make Fahrenheit run on modern hardware, but it was made without love and consideration.

In my opinion, Standard Definition overall seems softer, but it is the superior option.
The original textures retain more detail, and everything looks like a more cohesive art style.
Steamdeck Optimisations
Playing on the Steamdeck can be very troublesome. Why?
Sometimes the game does not launch with a Controller Scheme by default. We can easily fix this!

One Simple Fix...!
  • After launching the game, hold the STEAM button and use the right trackpad as a mouse to create/load a profile, using R2 to click.
  • Once in the Main Menu of Fahrenheit, after creating/loading a profile, navigate to Settings, and Controls.
  • Change the default control set to be Controller, instead of Mouse and Keyboard.
  • The main menu, and all game controls should now be responsive.
Further Optimisations...
coming soon
Conclusion

Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy is not the most problematic game to configure, and I hope you find enjoyment in this thrilling adventure!

Have an amazing adventure, and choose carefully...!
