The problem is that if you don't use a real barrel attached to the gun the precision is extremely bad. The machine gun spreads its bullets like Roman candle (you'll have a spread of a couple of meters at 50 meter distance more or less), so sadly at least one actual barrel is needed for the gun to me remotely accurate.
I'm almost done with the gun but I need some sleep (8 am here) and then I'll finish it this afternoon.

you can kind of create a fake gun barrel that can be smaller using scaleables, but the muzzle flash wont show up at the end of the barrel

Well I did some more testing and I'm bored so I'm building a Pak 36. It'll be a bit wonjy due to the big guns and girthy gun barrles in the game but it is what it is until we get guns and gun barrels that are more to scale. :)

I've myself shot a 20 mm auto-cannon and been next to 40 mm Bofors cannons when fired and for a 37 mm cannon to make the sound the machine gun does in game just feels wrong, it's not a cork gun. So that's why I'd prefer to wait for a scaleable actual cannon. But as I've said I've done some testing before and you can get a semi-decent effect from 24-72 machine guns, so maybe if I'm bored. :)

I've done some testing and you can get a half-decent low level AP effect by stacking dozens of machine guns, but the sound it makes doesn't get any louder which and it sucks to have a cannon go "plop", but I might give it a go at some point, no promises though.
