Rout at Point Cruz [Mission]

November 18th, 1942. After the Matanikau Offensive of Novemeber 1-4th, the Americans consolidate and occupy the positions around Hill 78, 82, 83 and 84 and begin to push west. The newly arrived 182nd Infantry Regiment has also moved into the line and is set to hold a piece of ground at Point Cruz just off the beach. The regiment is totally fresh and has never seen combat before. After attempts were made by the 182nd, 164th and and 8th Marines to extend their line past Point Cruz, the Americans and Japanese forces settle into a static line. On the night of November 20th, the Japanese 16th Infantry Regiment who by this time were now veterans of earlier battles in October attack the 1st Battalion of the 182nd and rout it in detail. The battalion loses significant ground to the weight of the Japanese attack. In the following days, 1st Battalion, 182nd Infantry Regiment as well as elements of the 8th Marines and 164th retake their lost ground and once again settle into the static line around Point Cruz. From November 1942 to January 1943, the Point Cruz Line would be the primary front line on the island.
