Fernmeldeturm

The Fernmeldeturm Berlin-Schäferberg is a radio tower in Wannsee, within the Berlin city limits, near Potsdam. It was constructed by the West German government in 1961-63 to allow the then isolated island of West Berlin to communicate with the rest of West Germany via over-the-horizon radio links to towers such as the one at Gartow, over 130km away. It is 212m high, has been operational since 1964, and has been configured in vastly different manners for different purposes over the last 60 years. It can be seen from all over Berlin and Potsdam and has become an iconic landmark for the region south-west of Berlin center. My new Potsdam map would feel incomplete without it!
