Sekiro Veteran's Progression Guide

A collection of personal notes I took at the start of the 2024 when replaying Sekiro again after 100%ing it in 2019.
The objective of the guide is to be used as a reference for any run, regardless of finale objective, aiming to not miss any items or quest interactions as you go in order, also letting you obtain all Ending-related items as you go since they can be all achieved simultaneously.
In case I missed some steps, there are chapters for each ending at the bottom with detailed instructions on how to get them.
As for my previous guide, I suggest which quest paths to choose from, as I believe some quests have more to offer than others.

I want to stress that these are just my notes and are meant for someone who already knows the game extensively - a veteran, if you will, hence the namesake Elden Ring's armor in the guide's picture - but needs a nudge-nudge in between runs, or better, wants to make sure is not missing anything.

  3. Find the Dungeon Memorial Mob merchant in the rooms past the bridge on the right of the Ashina castle entrance, towards the basin where the game started.

  1. Obtain Gyoubu's Broken Horn from entering the inside of the house near the start of the game.
  2. Face Minor Boss: Seven Ashina Spears.
  3. Find Remnant where Kuro was at the start of the game.
  4. Meet Jinzaemon Kumano, near the whole where Sekiro comes out at the start.
  5. Face Minor Boss: Lone Shadow Longswordsman, where the game starts.
  6. Unlock Sculptor's Idol at Abandoned Dungeon, past the waters at the start of the game.

  1. Face Minor Boss: General Kuranosuke Matsumoto just at the top of the stairs.
  2. Rescue Fujioka the Info Broker who is trapped by the samurai below him, and speak to him to obtain the Nightjar Beacon Memo (he then moves to Dilapidated Temple and becomes a vendor, you can buy a Gourd Seed for 2000 Coins from him there).
  3. Open the treasure chest and collect a Gourd Seed.
  4. Obtain the Sabimaru, all the way down the pagoda.
  5. Find a hidden passage and acquire a Prayer Bead inside a treasure chest.
  6. Interact with an Emma and Kuro's remnant.
  7. Face Minor Boss: Ashina Elite - Jinsuke Saze.
  8. Face Boss: Genichiro Ashina.
  9. Acquire the first Ninjutsu Technique: Bloodsmoke Ninjutsu.
  10. Talk to Kuro, the Divine Heir who will tell you to go outside his window to find Isshin Ashina.
  11. Talk to Kuro once again and loot the Gun Fort Shrine Key.
  12. Toward Isshin's quarters and look below you, you'll notice an area that you can drop to. This is Old Grave Idol. If you drop down to a broken roof behind said idol, you'll meet Blackhat Badger and can now purchase the Loaded Umbrella material from him for 1600 sen.
  13. For Ayanama's Quest: Go to the Old Grave Sculptor Idol and go back through the gate where there are two enemies, one of which is the spear guy. Kill them both and head towards the bridge, where you can Eavesdrop on these two guards. The Ashina want salt. After giving the Peddler this information, rest at the idol, and his stock will increase.

  1. Buy Mask Fragment: Dragon at the Abandoned Dungeon Entrance Dungeon Memorial Mob for 5000 Sen.
  2. You can also buy a Prayer Bead from this merchant.
  3. Obtain Rotting Prisoner's Note
  4. Speak to Doujon and get the Surgeon's Bloody Letter
  5. Face Minor Boss: Shichimen Warrior (optional) and acquire the Ceremonial Tanto
  6. Jinzaemon Kumano here can be told to go to Doujon, as his quest would end with him getting killed regardless. Send him to Doujon and save Kotaro instead. Sending either Jinzaemon or Kotaro to Doujun will reward 3 x Lump of Fat Wax when you return to the Abandoned Dungeon and speak with Doujon.
Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo
　
　
　
　
　
　
　
　
　
  1. Speak to Kotaro.
  2. In the room with the monks and crickets loot the Gourd Seed.
  3. Speak to the Old Hag and she'll ask you to bring her some Rice, which you will get later.
  4. Loot the Red and White Pinwheel and loot the White Pinwheel around the area where the Demon Bell is and the closest shrine to the next mini-boss.
  5. Give one to Kotaro, White is the best for his story. Red and White is good for Anayama's quest, but the reward is only an item for lower merchant cost, so unless you plan to NG+ a lot, I prefer the better ending.
  6. Face Minor Boss: Armored Warrior - ROBERTOOOO.
  7. Face Minor Boss: Long Arm Centipede Sen-Un, much further up the mountain, inside the lower Temple on the right.
  8. Loot Senpou Esoteric Text by going through a cave and coming out the other side near the Temple at the top of the mountain.
  9. If here before Genichiro this is where this exploration ends (see point 10), if not ring the bell in the large temple.
  10. Face Boss: Folding Screen Monkeys.
  11. Acquire Puppeteer Nunjitsu from the boss and the Mortal Blade from the Divine Child of Rejuvenation in Inner Sanctum.
  12. Obtain Holy Chapter: Infested and bring it to the Divine Child of Rejuvenation. This can be done if you come to Senpou temple before talking to Kuro about the Mortal Blade, or by diving in the pond near the "Temple Grounds" idol after completing Mibu Village.
  13. Continue eating the rice you receive, then ask for more from the Divine Child of Rejuvenation until she falls asleep.
  14. When she gives the Rice for Kuro, bring it to him. After he eats it, and go to talk about it with both Kuro and the Divine Child.
  15. Reload the area and go back to the Folding Monkeys' arena, and exhaust the dialogue with the Divine Child.
  16. Next go to the cave on the left of the Main Temple shrine, and in it, find a blue monk with on the Holy Chapter: Dragon's Return. Bring it to the Divine child in her room.
  17. Next, go forward until finding both the fruits of the serpent.
  18. Using Puppeteer Nunjitsu, make the "rat" near the kite close to Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo your puppet, then go up to the large tree with the woman asking for rice, and wake your way to the other side of the valley, to the idol "Sunkey Valley Passage".

  1. After gaining the Mortal Blade, you'll want to teleport back to the top of Ashina Castle and drop from the roof into the moat. Grapple out and then make your way through the few enemies here and across the bridge to the exit of Ashina Castle. Use the Gun Fort Shrine Key to open the shrine and speak to the Tengu of Ashina.
  2. Go to the Great Serpent Shruine, and cross into Sunken Valley
  3. From this point onward, you will want to drop by Isshin's room in Ashina Castle and eavesdrop on him. You are looking for a conversation between him and Emma that gives you some insight into the story and options available.

    1. Unlock Under-Shrine Valley Idol. When you first arrive at Under-Shrine Valley, turn around and grapple across, defeat two Gunmen, and jump and grab a ledge. You'll come to a grave site where you can find 1x Prayer Bead. The pond nearby leads to a Headless but you cannot go there until after Mibu Village is completed.
    2. Get Gourd Seed. From the "Under-shrine Valley" Idol, progress forward until you get to the fourth rifleman on the path. If you drop down to the poison lizard and the part where you hug the wall, you've gone too far. There is a climbable wall near where the rifleman was. Climb up the wall where you'll find two more riflemen, one of which you have to grapple up to. After defeating that rifleman, there is a wall on the left that you can climb. You'll find the gourd seed near a small hut up there.
    3. Unlock Sunken Valley Idol.
    4. Face Minor Boss: Snake Eyes Shirafuji.
    5. Unlock Gun Fort Idol.
    6. Face Minor Boss Long-arm Centipede Giraffe (Important: He rewards Large Fan for Divine Abduction Prosthetic Tool, necessary for Kotaro's quest.
    7. Get Prayer Bead. There is a hole in the floor to the left of the statue. Crouch and follow the left path to the chasm. Follow the two grapple hooks to the right to the first platform. Look up and to the right for the next grapple point to the next platform. Walk across the platform then look down and to the left for the final grapple point. This item will be on the ground in the center the mini-centipedes and poison geckos.
    8. Trigger the Great Serpent by crossing the bridge, then teleport to the Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo Idol. Use the Puppeteer Ninjutsu on the Rat near the Kite mechanism. Grapple across and get the Sunken Valley Cavern Idol. Drop Down and kill the Great Serpent. Get Fresh Serpent Viscera.
    9. Now teleport back to Kotaro, use the Divine Abduction on him, and then meet him in the Folding Monkeys arena.

    1. Make your way through the higher part of the Sunkey Valley passage, towards the body of water where the Guardian Ape is.
    2. Speak with the Old Hag next to the Bodhisattva Valley Idol and give her Rice to find out how to get past the Great Serpent.
    3. Face Boss: Guardian Ape.
    4. Loot the Lotus of the Palace in the cave after.
    5. Find Toxic Memorial Mob in the lower part of the area, going backwards from Bodhisattava Valely Idol.
    6. Use Puppeteer Ninjutsu on Monkey near the Serpent and get past it,
    7. Get Dried Serpent Viscera
    8. Unlock Ashina Depths: Poison Pool Idol.
    9. Deliver both the Fresh and Dried Serpent Viscera to the Divine Child.
    10. Rest at the Idol, then eavesdrop on the child.
    Ashina Depths / Hidden Forest
    　
    　
    　
    　
    　
    　
    　
    　
    　
    1. Face Minor Boss: Snake Eyes Shirahagi near the Poison Pools Idol.
    2. Enter the cave after and grapple up to a small passage and jump up the wall to find some items including a Prayer Bead from the top of a statue.
    3. Then make your way down to fight the Headless Ape a second time. At this point, if you port out you won't be able to port back to this Idol but will find a Shichimen Warrior (optional) in this area.
    4. Speak to Jinzaemon Kumano, unless you sent him to Doujon.
    5. Face Minor Boss: Headless inside the mist. (optional)
    6. Face Minor Boss: Tokujiro the Glutton.
    7. Face Minor Boss: Mist Noble.
    8. Return to Doujun after completing the Ashina Depths to find him crying near his cell. He will give you the item Surgeon's Stained Letter, and then direct you to read it for further instructions.

    1. Speak to Exiled Memorial Mob.
    2. Get Gourd Seed next to the big tree with white leaves.
    3. Speak to Jinzaemon Kumano (optional depending on the quest).
    4. Face Minor Boss: O'rin of the Water (optional).
    5. From the Water Mill Idol, jump on top of the rooftops and head towards a dead end to find the Pine Resin Ember upgrade material for the Flame Vent.
    6. Speak to the Head Priest of Mibu Village inside the house.
    7. Get a Prayer Bead on the higher floor of the house.
    8. Face Boss: Corrupted Monk, obtain the Mibu Breathing Technique, then loot the Shelter Stone after.
    9. After obtaining Mibu Breathing Technique, it's time to dive at several locations for loot. Do this before continuing!

      - In Hirata Estate, the body of water at the start.

      - In Hirata Estate, before the Bamboo Ticketh Slope Idol.

      - In Hirata, after the Bamboo Ticketh Slope Idol.
      
- In Sepou Temple, Temple Ground idol, in the body of water right in front of it, the location of one Prayer Bead.

      - In Sunken Valley, the pool of water right under the Great Serpent Shrine, directly on the right looking from the balcony, or before the Under-shrine Valley Idol.

      - In Sunken Valley, before Sunken Valley's Riven Cave.
      - In Abandoned Dungeon, in front of the Underground Waterway.

      - In Mibu Village, at the start after the namesake idol, here you'll also find .
      
- In Mibu Village, and at the bridge with the Samurai.

      - In Mibu Village, right before the Corrupted Monk Apparition.
      
- In Ashina Castle, in the mot before the castle entrance, right after the Bullfight.

      - In Ashina Castle, in the mot behind the castle.
    10. Go back to Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo, and get the Holy Chapter: Infested, unless you got it earlier.
    11. Kill the Red-Eyed Treasure Carp in the lake near the entrance of Mibu Village. It will give you the item Red Carp Eyes, which you then need to bring them back to Doujun. After giving him the eyes, reload for another eavesdrop opportunity.
    12. Rest again and head toward the Underground Waterway Sculptor's Idol. Continue down the waterway to the small island to find a red-eyed Jinzaemon/Kotaro. It is recommended that you engage him now, otherwise you will have to contend with Doujun as well. Afterward, dive under the water and head towards the cage surrounded by loot, near the cage is a small cave. Go through and grapple your way up; you'll reach Doujun's room and find him there. Talk to him, grab some items, and then open the nearby gate. Rest. 
    13. Now, from the Underground Waterway Sculptor's Idol, drop in the water and swim towards Senpou (away from the Dungeon). Both Doujun and whomever you initially sent to him and have not killed before will await you on the island to your left. They will both have red eyes and be incredibly hostile; kill them for your final rewards.

    1. Face Minor Boss: Chained Ogre at the base of the pagoda again.
    2. Face Minor Boss: Lone Shadow Masanaga the Spear-bearer near Old Grave Shrine.
    3. Face Minor Boss: Lone Shadow Vilehand on the way to the top of the Pagoda.
    4. Endings Choice / Face Boss: Great Shinobi Owl or side with him and defeat Emma, the Gentle Blade / Isshin Ashina (SHURA ENDING)
.
    5. If Owl is defeated, go down and talk to Kuro.
    6. This is also a great opportunity to go to Isshin for the dialogue between him and Emma.
    7. Speak to Emma to be given info on how to make Kuro bleed.
    8. Eavesdrop on Kuro, then talk to him about all the ingredients for the incense, when exhausted, rest at the Idol and eavesdrop on him again.
    9. Emma will have now moved up the stairs from Kuro's room, talk to her.
    10. Rest then speak to her again to obtain Tomoe's Note.
    11. Next, you'll find her at the Old Grave Idol, on the left, at Tomoe's grave.
    12. Now, teleport to the Dilapidated Temple and eavesdrop on her and the Sculptor. Then confront her about it.
    13. Finally, burn the Incense.
    14. Now go to the Divine Heir and get the Frozen Tears from her, the key item for the Return Ending.
    15. Go to the Ashina Depths - Wedding Cave Door Idol and head to the bridal palanquin and pray to transport to Fountainhead Palace.
    16. Go to the Hiarata pot guy and after trading enough scales, and reaching the Fountainhead Palace, exhausting Harunaga's dialogue will result in him giving you Truly Precious Bait and asking you to feed it to the Great Carp. This is one of two Truly Precious Baits that have differing rewards depending on whose bait is used.

    1. Use the Father's Bell Charm on the Buddha.
    2. Face Minor Boss: Lone Shadow Masanaga the Spear-bearer (again).
    3. Face Minor Boss: Juzou the Drunkard (again).
    4. Face Boss: Owl (Father).

    1. Face Boss: Corrupted Monk.
    2. Locate the secret room containing the Water of the Palace.
      Go to the Fountainhead Palace: Flower Viewing Stage Sculptor's Idol. Turn around from the idol and go back through to the courtyard where you fought the palace noble and the Okami warrior wearing purple. Go up the stairs to your right, and there is a hole in the floorboards right at the end of a white "blood" trail. Dive in. The Water of the Palace is in the chest against the far wall.
    3. Provide the Water of the Palace to the Head Priest of Mibu Village.
    4. Face Minor Boss: Sakura, Bull of the Palace (optional).
    5. Face Minor Boss: Shichimen Warrior and acquire Lapis Lazuli (optional). ùDefeat Okami Leader Shizu next to Great Shakura Sculptor Idol.
    6. By now you should have mastered at least a secret skill, so take the opportunity to gain the Mushin Esoteric Text from Isshin and the Black Scroll from a chest around his house.
    7. Now that the waters are safe, speak to the Daughter of the Carp Attendant  on top of the roof of a sunken building
    8. Face Minor Boss: Headless and acquire Yashariku's Spiritfall (optional).
    9. Acquire Prayer Bead inside a treasure chest underwater near the Headless.
    10. Get Gourd Seed close to Palace Ground idol, after swimming underwater where the Great Colored Carp is, in a big red chest.
    11. Speak to the merchant, Pot Noble Koremori, get his Truly Precious Bait.
    12. Buy Mask Fragment: Left for 12 Treasure Carp Scales from Pot Noble Koremori.
    13. Kill the Great Colored Carp (optional).
      For the Great Colored Carp and the Two Pot Nobles quest.
      - Giving Precious Bait 1 and 2 times will reward 1x Treasure Carp Scale and 3x Treasure Carp Scales, then it will be advised against by the guardian. 

      - Giving either of the Truly Precious Baits will kill the respective merchant, leave a Lapislazuli as a reward on their corpse, and give the inventory of them to the other, be it Koremori or Haranaga.
    14. Teleport to the Guardian Ape's Watering Hole idol and obtain Great White Whisker & give it to the Great Carp Attendant.
    15. Resting again will show him dead with his daughter by him, then teleport back to Palace Grounds Idol and find the other daughter in the house.
    16. Face Boss: Divine Dragon.
    Ashina Reservoir - Part 5 and Ashina Outskirts - Part 2
    　
    　
    　
    　
    　
    　
    　
    　
    　
    1. Make your way back from Kuro's Room unlocking all idols again.
    2. Face Minor Boss: Ashina Elite Ujinari Mizuo (optional) located in the hidden dojo below Isshin Ashina's room.
    3. Face Minor Boss: Seven Ashina Spears - Shume Masaji Oniwa (optional) found right after the "Ashina Reservoir" idol.
    4. From the Old Grave idol, the bridge has been reconnected and from here you can make your way back from the Outskirts, or, you could teleport to the Mount Senpou Demon Bell idol, and from here use the shinobi door to go back where the Headless is and from there go back up and quickly reach Outskirts - Staircase.
    5. Face Minor Boss: Shigekichi of the Red Guard (optional).
    6. Face Boss: Demon of Hatred.
      　
      Final Ending Preparations.
      　
    7. Face Final Boss: Genichiro, Way of Tomoe / Isshin, the Sword Saint.
    8. Endings.
    ENDINGS
    All Endings can be achieved simultaneously, beside Shura, which requires siding with Owl instead of fighting him earlier in the game.

    • After obtaining all the ingredients Kuro asks for the incense, when stopped by Owl on your way back to him, decide to side with him over fighting him.
      This will end the game 75% of the way in, and have a unique final boss, Emma, the Gentle Blade and Isshin Ashina.

    • For Immortal Severance, simply follow the story, then give the Dragon Tear alone to Kuro.
    ENDING - Purification
    　
    　
    　
    　
    　
    　
    　
    　
    　
    • Exhaust all dialogues with Kuro and Emma, including a conversation with Kuro about the Mortal Blade. Eavesdrop on Kuro while he's standing near the incense burner. Multiple rests may be required for Kuro to appear here instead of in the library. The specific location for eavesdropping requires the player to stand just around the corner behind Kuro and the large statue he stands near. Go around behind the statue and then hug the wall on the left side of it. Rest and repeat until you eavesdrop on Kuro, alluding to a secret he's keeping from Sekiro, which includes the phrase "Do... what must be done."  If you are not getting this eavesdrop conversation, you might not have exhausted all dialogues yet with Kuro and/or Emma. (You may also eavesdrop on Kuro in the library while facing the window in the corner, and looking back at Kuro to eavesdrop.)
    • After resting, Emma will move to the top of the stairs. Speak with her and agree to keep Kuro alive.
    • Progress the story and collect the second key item (Lotus of the Palace or Shelter Stone). At this point, you will face new Interior Ministry Ninjas at Ashina Castle.
    • At the top of Ashina Castle, The Owl will give you the choice to follow the Iron Code or to continue to serve Kuro, the Divine Heir. Choose to continue to serve Kuro and defeat The Owl.
    • Talk to Emma at the top of the stairs again, she will now give you Tomoe's Note.
    • Travel to the Old Grave Idol and go to the left, you will find Emma standing in front of two tombstones. Talk to Emma and then travel to Dilapidated Temple.
    • Eavesdrop on Emma and Sculptor from behind the temple. Talk to Emma and then choose "Ask about what you overheard", and then, "What are you hiding?" to receive Father's Bell Charm. Use it at the Buddha statue. If you haven't completed Hirata Estate area, you will need to do it by killing Lady Butterfly before you can use Father's Charm.
    • Go to the Lady Butterfly boss room and defeat Owl (Father) to obtain Aromatic Flower; the optional Memory is also awarded for this fight.  There are also two mini-bosses in the area before this that award the player with Prayer Beads; one is optional while the other one is mandatory in order to continue.
    • Beat the final boss, talk to Kuro, and choose to give him the Aromatic Flower ("Everblossom") and then the Divine Dragon's Tears

    • Acquire the Holy Chapter: Infested early, or after getting the power to swim underwater.
    • Travel to Inner Sanctum Idol and talk to the Divine Child of Rejuvenation. Talk to her to receive Rice (you can give her the Holy Chapter: Infested now as well).
    • Get rid of the rice by using it on yourself (or giving it to the Old Hag). Reset the area completely--leave Senpou Temple and return (using the return idol will not reset the area); resting will not suffice. If you have more than one rice or Fine Snow in your inventory from previous playthroughs, you need to get rid of all of them.
    • Repeat this step, asking for more Rice and using it until you trigger the Divine Child to fall asleep. Ask her for Rice one last time, use the Rice, and reset the area.
    • The Divine Child will now not be feeling very well. Exhaust her dialogue and give her a Persimmon (you can buy this from the vendor in Shugendo; he also gives you one for free if you visit him after speaking with the Divine Child for the first time). Give her a Persimmon and then ask for more Rice. She will give you the item Rice for Kuro and ask that you give it to him.
    • You can give Rice for Kuro immediately or later, but do it before defeating the Divine Dragon. Once you give Kuro the Rice for Kuro, rest at the idol and speak to him again. He will give you two Sweet Rice Balls. You can use one of them (not mandatory) for a little extra dialogue with Kuro and later with the Child.
    • Travel back to the Divine Child and talk to her.
    • The Holy Chapter: Infested is required at this point, and must be obtained if you did not manage to acquire it earlier (see above).  Once you have given it to her, rest so that she moves to the Illusory Hall (where the Folding Screen Monkey boss was); an entry portal is in the water directly across from the Divine Child's Inner Sanctum.
    • At the Illusory Hall talk to the Divine Child (located near the large tree in the center) who tells you to seek out a High Senpou priest.
    • Travel to Main Hall Idol at Senpou Temple and retrieve the Holy Chapter: Dragon's Return from the cave just outside the Hall's side entrance. The item will be on the blue monk's corpse at the end of the cave.  This item cannot be acquired from the corpse until this point is reached in the quest line. You will then need to rest.
    • Talk to the Divine Child who has moved back to the Inner Sanctum, give her Holy Chapter: Dragon's Return and she will mention needing two serpentine fruits:
- Fresh Serpent Viscera
- Dried Serpent Viscera
    • Travel to the Divine Child and give her both Viscera items. Rest then eavesdrop.
    • If you have not done it already, progress the story and collect the Lotus of the Palace and the Shelter Stone key items, then choose to Stay Loyal to Kuro, defeat Owl, and burn the Fountainhead Incense at the Altar after talking to Kuro.
    • Travel back to the Inner Sanctum; the doors are now open. Talk to the Divine Child to receive Frozen Tears.
    • Continue the game normally, beat the final boss, talk to Kuro, and give him the Frozen Tears with the Divine Dragon's Tears.

    Hi Niks.
    You can take a backup before Owl in Ashina Castle Part 4, and then with all the other steps done, after defeating Isshin Saint in Ashina Reservoir - Part 5, as it's a prompt on the body of Kuro that determines the ending.

    good guide, one thing I do most people don't is run straight to the corrupted monk at the wedding doors, and clear out the gun fort. I head into the second gen with 4 AP plus way more health and gourd seeds to work with early.

    I see what you both mean, but in writing it, I thought of ways to do everything once instead of having to go back to other areas a lot. Considering I tailored this to a player like me who has knowledge of the game, fighting a fight before or after makes little difference I'd say.

    I know the second ape fight is not the easiest, with the double monkey and all, but it's nothing the Empowered Morthal Draw can't take care of quickly.

    Really good guide. Clear and concise. Nice to read ;). I´m agree with #SusNojutsu skip the fight with the headless ape and his partner is something I do since my second playthrough. First fight is kinda cool to me, second one is so annoying to me despite being easy most of the times I did. Anyway excellent guide. Keep it up ;).
