How to eliminate all crashes and enjoy a game

I'll guide you through actions required to play this game without most crashes.
Installing DPfix with SweetFX are covered in this guide too.

1. Installing drivers
First things first. Install latest PhysX drivers.

Next, install OLD Nvidia drivers. This step will wipe out most of famous crashes!

I used 314.07. It hepled me to get smoothly through Hospital Crash and Chapter 9 crash (which i never saw, due to installing this drivers).

(OPTIONAL) You can also install K-Lite Mega codec pack. I had mine installed, so i don't know if it's needed, but people reported it can help if you have troubles playing in-game movies.
2. Adding Xbox 360 controller support
If you see controller option greyed out, but it's connected, you need to set up controller for using with older games.

For Windows 8:
1) Go to search (swipe in from right edge and type joy.cpl. Select it. (it's faster than navigate through control panlel)

For Windows 7:
1) Type joy.cpl in the search box and click Game Controllers icon when it appears.

Select Xbox 360 controller and click "Advanced" button and select it, then click OK.

Now game should recognize controller.

3. Eliminating start up crashes
Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Deadly Premonition The Director's Cut

Right-click DP.exe and set up compability with Windows 98 or 95.
IMPORTANT! Check "Run As Administrator"

Do the same for DPLauncher.exe

I've set up Win98 for launcher and Win95 for the game. If you don't experience crashes, just check "Run as administrator", without setting compability.
4. Installing DPfix
DPfix is the utility which will help you to improve resolution of the game. PC port is locked to 720p which is ridiculously small for modern fullHD screens.

I'll just paste instructions from readme file, it's pretty simple to set up:

How do I use it?
================
1) Delete previous version of the mod if you have any
2) Place the contents of the .zip into the game's binary directory. (The place where DP.exe is)
(this may be something like C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Deadly Premonition The Director's Cut)
3) Adjust the settings in DPfix.ini as desired
4) Adjust the keybindings in DPfixKeys.ini as desired
5. Installing SweetFX
SweetFX is the utility to improve game's visuals, by correcting gamma, color intensity settings etc.
You may have noticed, that PC port of Deadly Premonition have blue-ish tint, to get rid of it and make colors more natural warm looking you can install SweetFX

6. Additional notes
Though I did all above steps, i still experienced occasional crashes when entering houses for example. To get rid of this you can run game in windowed mode to get trough tough place.

Just don't forget to save often!

the game runs at 15 fps

I had to play in windowed mode at 24 fps (frame limiter) just to finish the game.

I tried all of that and it didnt make the game work at all and it cost me several hours in tinkering and downloading shifty files from the internets.
although i have found a solution, it is much simpler than all of this garbage. and it works on windows 10.
firstly, all you have to do is go to the control panel -> programs -> uninstall a program. now on the side of that there will be a selection called "turn windows features on or off", click on that one.
then navigate down that list to "media features" and expand that and check the box beside "windows media player".
now, all you have to do is press the windows button and type "default" and default apps should appear, now change the default media player to windows media player and....
*ta da* Deadly Premonition works, without any sketchy downloads, NO "DP.ini" NO "sweetFX" it just works smooth.

The 360 pad get recognized now but it doesn't work properly, you can't move the character and the camera movement is broken.
