Reducing The Gifu [Mission]

After the American 27th and 35th Infantry Regiments cleared The Galloping Horse and Sea Horse hill complexes of Japanese forces, The Gifu was totally isolated. The defenders who by now were sick, starving and emaciated had radioed the Japanese 17th Army Headquarters that they would fight to the last man. On January 22nd, the American 25th Infantry Division commander had managed to bring up a borrowed US Marine M3 Stuart tank up the jeep trail to the face of the The Gifu and began to blast away at Japanese pillboxes and bunker emplacements. As the tank carried out its work, the 35th Infantry Regiment advanced through the gap in the line and the Japanese responded by carrying out a final last ditch Banzai Charge which effectively eliminated all Japanese resistance on Mount Austen. The strongest and most fortified position on Guadalcanal was finally in American hands. Within days, the Americans finally took Kokombona, and began to push the Japanese back to western tip of the island at Cape Esperance. At the same time, the Japanese Navy had launched Operation Ke at the direct orders of Emperor Hirohito. On February 8th, 1943 the last Japanese troops quietly marched aboard troop transports and evacuated the island. The Guadalcanal Campaign was over.
