The Mount Austen Offensive [Mission]

After the 1st Marine Division left Guadalcanal, new units like the remainder of the Americal Division and 2nd Marine Division arrive on the island to continue the offensive against the Japanese 17th Army. On December 18th, 1942 the fresh 132nd Infantry Regiment marches into the hills around Mount Austen to finally clear it of all Japanese resistance. The defenders made up of the 228th Infantry Regiment and remnants of the 124th Infantry Regiment had dug themselves into the hills with connected trenches, bunkers and pillboxes on high elevated positions with interconnected fields of fire. At the heart of these defenses, was the mighty and formidable redoubt called “The Gifu”. Forced to carry only light weapons to battle and limited grenades and medical supplies, the Americans would be pushed to the limit. For the men of the 132nd, the battle would be an uphill fight from here on out.
