Open Advanced Options, scroll down under HUD options and find Use the team status display in the HUD, then tick it off.


Create an autoexec.cfg file (if you don't already have one) and type in this command:

Launch TF2 and voilà, balance is restored and even your performance is improved (the Match HUD is terribly optimized per nu-TF2 standards). in the distance you hear the faint seething of a Valve Employee whose name starts with a J

The old timer is bugged[github.com] and will show a broken timer on top of a blank Match HUD background after relaunching TF2, something which still hasn't been fixed after over 6.5 years (thanks Valve). In order to fix this, simply open the console and type in this HUD refresh command ...but the issue is that you'll have to do this every time the bug occurs.

For a permanent fix, put that same command at the start of your autoexec.cfg file. This will execute every launch and correct the bug seamlessly, no manual input required.

For those using mastercomfig[comfig.app], type in your modules.cfg file inside \cfg\overrides or for a new config head to the website and toggle Match HUD off under HUD.

Additionally, there's also some select mods such as Community HUD Fixes[github.com] that deal with this issue as well.

If for whatever strange inconceivable reason you want to revert back to the hideous Match HUD, you can tick it back on in Advanced Options or remove the command in your autoexec.cfg file and type inside the game console. Remember to remove from your config as well.
