Mop Up at Alligator Creek [Mission]

August 21st, 1942. The 1st Marine Division has just won its first major victory against the Japanese of the war in the Pacific. The night before, the 28th Infantry regiment from the 7th Infantry Division under Kiyonao Ichiki attacked the dug in forces of the 1st Marine Division at Alligator Creek. In the attack, the detachment lost over 800 men. The morning after the attack, the Marines decided to attack the Japanese remnants who had retreated to a coconut grove just on the opposite bank from the Marines position. 1/1 crossed the stream and outflanked the Japanese and cleared out the grove with the help of the newly formed Cactus Air Force and A Company, 1st Tank Battalion brought four or five M3 Stuart tanks to help. It is believed that Ichiki himself was either killed in the final stages of the battle or committed Seppuku.
