Keisei AE Series / 京成AE形

The AE Series (AE形) is a limited express type EMU operated by Keisei Electric Railway as Skyliner.

Developed for service on the Narita Sky Access Line, the AE Series is Keisei’s second generation of airport express trains. As it shares the name of the original AE series in service from 1973 to 1993, it is sometimes referred to as the AE Series (2nd Generation). This type is the first private railway vehicle to be equipped with full active suspension on the leading cars, which is needed to ensure good ride quality at its planned operational speed of 160km/h. Arranged in fixed 8 car sets, it has a high performance 6M2T configuration using a VVVF control system manufactured by Toyo Denki. The exterior design is based on the concept of wind, combining a streamlined structure of the leading cars and the traditional indigo blue livery to evoke a sense of speed and elegance. A redesigned “Skyliner” logo is present on Car 5, all letters are capitalized except for the ‘i’, which has a red dot on the white car body, representing the Japanese flag. On the interior, the passenger cabin has a dome shaped ceiling with lights on each side, giving a feeling of calm and openness. The seats use a new type of spring fabric marketed as “Banex”, which aims to eliminate the feeling of hitting the bottom when sitting down. 8 trains were produced and entered service with the opening of the Sky Access Line in 2010, and one additional set joined the fleet in 2019, totalling 72 cars. Along with Skyliner services from Keisei-Ueno to Narita Airport, the AE series is also used for Morning Liner and Evening Liner commuter express trains, which runs along the Keisei Main Line.
