The first part of this guide is aimed at players who want to use their hard-earned money to buy their first bridge blueprint and find out about the differences beforehand. In the second part, I have a few tips that might also be of interest to players with more experience.

Part 1 - Bridge types and their properties

First things first: The bridge modules cannot be connected to the fishing hut, nor can you build houses or decorations on them.

There are currently 5 bridge types, which I will number for simplicity according to their position in the construction wheel and indicate with their number.

An overview of the bridge properties:

This is how the bridge variants look. Bridge1 does not make it through the deep river because it is very shallow.

Here you can see the respective maximum height:

Part 2 - Good to know

The narrow bridges can be combined with each other and the wide bridges can be combined with each other. However, a narrow and a wide module do not snap together.
The bridge module can be rotated using Q and E. If you press the mouse wheel, the option is switched to height adjustment: you can then use Q and E to change the height of the module.
Saving tip: The long module is exactly twice as long as the short module, but it costs slightly less than twice as much material.
If part of the module sinks into the ground due to a hilly floor surface, a decoration can be placed on the floor above as normal (see picture).
Sometimes you build a long bridge over the river and realise at the end that the last module cannot be placed on the other bank. This can often be solved by building the bridge a little higher. And of course you can save a lot of materials if you first place all the blueprints before you start hammering.
High modules can be used in a variety of ways, as a canopy at the entrance to a house, to build a shed or a shelter. You can easily build decorations under a module.

Extra: Special building ideas and their pitfalls

A jetty with a fishing hut 1
You can build a jetty and a fishing hut close to each other and place four planks from your inventory to create a visual transition. However, depending on how it is built, NPCs may have problems getting to their workstation. If this is important to you, leave the gap larger.

The way it is built here, the NPCs come into the hut:

Another option is to build the bridge module very close to the fishing hut with a little dexterity. This will allow the NPCs to enter the hut directly from the bridge. The picture and the following explanation are from Cocco:
Build the fishing hut as far into the water as possible. Then take the bridge part and adjust the height of the part with the buttons to the height of the fishing hut.
Hillside path 1
If you have a gentle hill, bridges 1 and 2 work well. Unfortunately, the gradient is not adjustable, so you have to find a hill that corresponds well with the bridge gradient. Neither 1 or 2 are suitable for steep cliffs.
Hillside path 2
If you want to lead a path up a cliff, you need a lot of patience. The best way is in curves and sometimes you may have to interrupt the path. It can also be a little easier if you often use a junction or fork instead of the long, straight module. If you get stuck at one point, you can try again at the last junction and then remove anything superfluous at the end and replace junctions with simple modules or bends.
I built my hill path in a place where the NPCs always walked up the cliffs to get to work anyway. I also blocked the passages between the cliffs by running after them and building a small wall at the narrowest passage that everyone wanted to use. Since then, they have used the path, but often try the other way first.
Walkable city wall
As most bridges can also be built high, it is possible to use them to build a walkable palisade wall. It may make sense to first build the desired fence/palisade (blueprint only) and then align the height of the wooden walkway with it. After all, we want to be able to look out over the land from the wall and still be protected by the palisade. Once the wooden path has been built, the fence can be torn down and replaced so that it fits snugly.
(My inner fence was already there before and was not built especially for the wall).

Terraces and co.

To build a terrace from a bridge, proceed as follows: Change the blueprint door of the house to a wall (do not build it yet). This makes the stairs disappear and the bridge can be placed. The blueprint is then changed back to a door. Now everything can be built.

That is strange. I have not found a setting for this in the keybinds either. Maybe that would be a question for Morri/the devs.

A-HA! I've been trying to remember where I saw this info, especially "The bridge module can be rotated using Q and E. If you press the mouse wheel, the option is switched to height adjustment: you can then use Q and E to change the height of the module."

Alas, I tried and tried, but pressing the mouse wheel did nothing. Well, it made a clicking sound, but didn't change the Q/E actions. Failing that, I tried using Q/E buttons while holding the wheel down and then while rolling the wheel. I have a couple of other buttons and tried clicking them to see if I could get it to switch, and nothing. Hopefully one day I'll figure out how to make this work on my system.

This is such an amazing guide! I really appreciate the time you took to share what you’ve learned.

The one thing that frustrates me is that my mouse wheel does not raise/lower the height, is changes the distance from me where the piece will be constructed. I read somewhere that clicking the wheel is supposed to toggle between height and distance, but that had no effect. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to coerce it to work. Meanwhile I’m going to try and keep this guide handy for next time I spin up the game.
