Tobu 10000 Series / 東武10000系

The 10000 Series (10000系) is a commuter EMU operated by Tobu Railway.

Manufactured from 1983 to 1996, the 10000 series is currently the most numerous type in Tobu's fleet. It was introduced as an improved derivative of the 8000 and 9000 series, and shares a similar stainless steel exterior design. The 10000 series is divided into the 10000, 10030, and 10080 subtypes. All variants are ground-level only cars not compatible with through operations into Tokyo Metro lines. The 10030 series have a slightly redesigned exterior, while both the width and number of seats have been increased, thus lowering the overall capacity. There is only one 4-car set of the 10080 series, which was Tobu's first VVVF vehicle built to trial the technology. A total of 486 cars were produced across the three subtypes, arranged into 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 carriage trains. The base 10000 series does not have any 4-car trains while the 10300 series has no 8-car trains. Renewal works on the type have been carried out gradually since 2007, and not all vehicles have been renewed to date. These works focused on refreshing the interior cabin, updating all seats, destination displays and adding wheelchair spaces. Some 6 and 4 car sets where also combined to form fixed 10-car sets as a part of the renewal process. As of current, most cars are still operational with the exception of some accident damaged vehicles and a few with faulty equipment. They are placed on the Tojo Line, Isesaki Line, Nikko Line, and Urban Park Line, typically on the portion of the network closer to Tokyo.
