How to disable Last Man Standing for all difficulties
由 Milo 制作
In Max Payne 3, in every difficulty except Old School, if your HP reaches zero while having at least one painkiller, the "Last Stand" ability will trigger, entering bullet time and giving you the chance to kill your attacker before going down, resulting in your survival.

However, if you're like me, and dislike this mechanic, and also find Old School a little too easy, or just want to disable this for whatever reason, I'll teach you how to in this guide, with a simple modification of a certain game file.

Install OpenIV
You'll need it to access the game's files.

Simply look for "OpenIV" on google and the first result should be the official page.
Accessing the game's files
Once OpenIV is installed, open it. Select the game Max Payne 3 (obviously) and if it's your first time opening it you might have to specify where it is installed.
Disabling Last Stand

Once you're here, you'll modify the following file: "globalsettings.xml".

There's two, on the following routes:

Max Payne 3 > common.rpf > data
Max Payne 3 > update.rpf > common > data.

You'll have to edit both of them.

Once you've opened the file, under <LastManStandingSettings>, set all values to 0, just like on the image above. Save and replace both files.

I highly recommend to do a backup of the file before replacing it so you can revert the changes.
Results
Since Last Stand is now disabled, you'll die instantly regardless of how many painkillers you have, in every gamemode and difficulty. Enjoy.

thanks for the guide, been looking to disable Last Man Standing because of how annoying it is (reloading checkpoints is disabled during LMS + it takes away all my Bullet Time + I'd rather just be instantly killed instead)

btw you only have to edit the "update.rpf - common - data" file.
the "common.rpf - data" one is not used by the game

@JP

If you can't find them, type 'globalsettings.xml' in the search bar, then click "Search in all archives".

Appreciate the comment ;). MP3 is one of my favorite games so naturally I've a significant amount of hours played on it.

And thanks for sharing that mod, looks like it's worth a try. Since I know the entire game by heart, the vanilla experience doesn't really pose much of a challenge for me anymore—hence why I created this guide. I also like to speedrun this game but it burns me out so bad to the point I can't play the game for months or years on end, so doing challenges like this is a nice experience from time to time.

I just saw this great guide and was kinda impressed how many hours played in max payne 3 you have and thought you're the guy for this kind job, maybe some day!

btw there's one mod on nexus i know, Realistic Payne i think it's called, it alters damage values, bullet time, removes ability to use painkillers and inscreases Max's health.

Sounds fun but it's more like a thing for someone who's bored with the game, not to have vanilla-like experience but with more challenge. But i might give it a try later.

Indeed, there appear to be settings to configure things such as the amount of damage received, but I've never been curious enough to experiment with it.

thanks, i like the idea of disabling last man standing. btw there are more setting in this file about how much damage you deal and receive, would be great to have some kind of a mod which makes the game more challenging
