I just store the ressources and take them as needed. A Silo will always try to export from it's first slot proceeding downward, that's why you can't really hook up the storage system to it, because that would empty the slot completely making room for items that shouldnt be put in that silo.
You can have semi-automatic systems, where you input the ressources in Silos, which you'd want to refine/purify.
With the New Machines only the connected Inputs will get automatically fille by the exporting Silo. If you want to, for example, want to automate Rocket Ammo, you just hook up three Silos exporting only Ref. Iron, Ref. Silicon and Ref. Carbon, and only the connected slot will be filled with that item.
I hope this helped!
My goal was to find if there is an option to automate the process when you put raw resources in one silo, you have 10 refinators/purifiers and it is automaticaly clean resources with further putting them in the right place.
+ I still can't understand how to make silo and fabricator works together and taking only resources that needed for craft (now it is taking row by row).
