You can tightly place pillars on small tiles Gucky. Probably preferable to only use them where you want pillars though, since they take 9 tiles to fill a Utility tile slot, meaning filling in one Utility tile slot loses you 9 material instead of the 2 from a single Utility tile. Not to mention having less HP.
Of course, if you have enough storage boxes, it's largely irrelevant.

And just to add insult to injury, the pillars buff the health of all the floor tiles they connect to, top and bottom, on top of adding a ton of support. Why does this take so long to unlock?
