I really hate how risky air travel is, I feel like something bad happens almost every time on top of the costs you mentioned. But it finally has its place a bit later in the game if you've got the shrieker from the dark council plus you bought the inflator from urgune
I did very well without even touching Hill Herb. And there were enough confiscations going around that I feel that was the right move. And, honestly, this game has a LOT of flaws. Like, a lot. I don't think it's unreasonable to think it might have been a design flaw.
Saving - Oh yes, it helps a lot to save but saving before buying goods will quickly take away the fun of risk and trail&error.
Sea/Air travel is great when you're on 3rd cart. Reason? TIME-SAVING. What is a thousand or two when you can save like 5-10 days. TIME IS MONEY! Big deal about opportunity cost when Im raking in tens of thousands (and there is no air bandits, is there?)
This is especially important when you have partnership with ships and airships.
Olive Oil - I made quite a bit on Olive oil when I was going with 2nd cart, low 40 is a good price to hunt for.
Spice - price changes all the time. Simply cant trust a city on having a generally high price or low on something.
Bribes - no, you should not ignore bribery, especially when it's on goods. It's true that the chance is low but when it succeeds, you can save thousands.
