About

This is a guide to Aquaria, a cute and wonderful indie game by Alec Holowka and Derek Yu. As usually I recommend playing the game with no guide at all to discover all its magic, and then using this help if you get stuck or to find any hidden stuff and secret that you missed.

Version 1.3
19feb2024: New table for achievements.
*dec 2023: Added new section for Aquarian Language and new secrets.
*jan 2024: Added info about modding and community.

I hope you like it, if so please rate it.
Basics: controls & the world
Basic Actions

  • Move (WASD): Just move around.

  • Swim (Space / Left mouse button): Pushes yourself forward. Useful to avoid projectiles and to go against some weak currents.

  • Look (E / Middle mouse button): Lets you look around with your mouse, useful to see incoming enemies and secret areas and where is the current taking you to.

  • Sing (Control / Right mouse button): Naija's main action when in her normal form lets her perform different actions and transform herself (See Songs section)

  • Song Shortcuts (0-9): You can change form and perform song actions by directly pressing numbers instead of singing. Faster but not so charming.

  • Map (Q): Check your surroundings. Explored map area will show white and not explored area in grey. You can't check your map in dark areas, and the minimap on the bottom-right corner stops working also.

  • Roll (R): Naija rolls in place. Might seem useless at the beginning, but it's quite usefull: it draws in the blue sparkles and ingredients, moves gears, throws away leeches, switches in Dual form...

  • Interaction (Space/right mouse button): You can interact with different objects in your world. You will know you can do it when you hover something and the mouse cursor shines.

  • Wall Climbing: If you swim against a wall you will grab it. Then you can swim again to jump from the wall in a fast move. This can be useful to avoid dangers, as well as to really climb when out of water.

The world around you

  • Song Plants: The plants look like bulbs and vibrate if you sing the note with the same color. Then they open and you can get stuff from inside, mainly ingredients and meals, learning the recipe when you get a meal for the first time.

  • Plant leaves: You can grab these plants with your Bind Song to get ingredients, recipes and sometimes even enemies.

  • Blue Healing Plants: These plants will heal you and recharge when you move out of an area. Enemies can also leave blue healing sparks behind when killed.

  • Currents: You can't go against a current at the beginning, but sometimes they are useful to move faster through a dangerous area.

  • Hot Currents: Burning barriers that hurt when touched.

  • Sea Horses: Faster movement. Interact to mount, then sing to give it directions. Not really useful if you ask me, specially after you get Beast or Fish forms.

  • Tadpoles: Some kind of greenish tadpoles with colores eyes can be found around. Sing the right color note for their eyes and they will stick to your body, healing you.

  • Ancient Turtles: Fast travelling checkpoints. Once you discover a new turtle you can use it to travel from one to another.

  • Blue Bulb Doors: Round strange bulbs that open when you shoot them with your Nature form's flower power. Useful for fast travel, but unless the Turtles, they are connected only in pairs.

  • Red Crystal: Red crystals are save points. You recover your health when using them and can also save the game. If you die, you start from your last save, losing all later progress. So, SAVE.

  • Blue Crystals: Always next to Hot Currents, can be used to teleport from one to another in Spirit form.

  • Light Blue Crystals: These are special and part of the story, and give you different powers.
Songs: Effects & Forms

Naija's main skill is singing. SONGS can have either EFFECTS, like moving stuff, or give her new FORMS, with many new powers. Plus, there are some songs used for specific purposes in the story. Here's the complete list.

Effects

Shield Song (Hotkey 9)
Protects Naija from many different projectile attacks, but not against physical contact with enemies or spikes. Learnt in the Secret Passage Cave.
Bind Song (Hotkey 0)
This is the way to grab things. Very useful to take special objects like Pearls, but also to move rocks, discovering hidden plants or opening paths. It's also usefull to take out the shell of armored enemies like snails, and to move some special enemies like the Poison Guys. Learnt in the Song Cave
Li's Song
On her journey, Naija will meet Li, a creature from the surface, similar to her. This song will call him to help and, if he's already there, it will change him to attack or passive mode. He's not as fast as some of Naija's forms. Learnt in Li's Cave (The Veil)

Forms

Normal (Hotkey 1 or X)
Naija's normal form has no special powers aside from swimming, rolling and the most important, singing. It's the only form capable of using different songs (see songs section).
Energy Song (Hotkey 2)
Naija goes wild in the main battle form. Capable of shooting powerful fireballs (right button) and even MORE powerful fireballs (hold and release right button for triple power-shot). Learnt by defeating the Fallen God in the Energy Temple.
Beast Song (Hotkey 3)
Beast form is faster and can go against the current, allowing you to go to new places. Plus she can ram enemies, eating them. Eating shooting enemies will give you a limited amount of shots of the same type. Learnt by defeating Mithala in Mithalas Cathedral
Nature Song (Hotkey 4)
Nature form is not harmed by natural spikes in Kelp, can open Blue Bulb Doors and Red Flowers with her flower power and also has a charged version that plants some kind of huge sea cucumber, hurting enemies. Learnt by defeating the Druniad Mother in Kelp Forest.
Sun Song (Hotkey 5)
Sun form shines like a star and lets you travel to dark places. Plus it throws a line of light in your moving direction and you can light all the screen for some seconds charging your powerwith the right mouse button. Learnt by defeating the Amerean Abomination in the Sun Temple.
Fish Song (Hotkey 6)
Fish form is the fastest of them all, useful for long distances and narro paths, and another important feature: some creatures will ignore Naija in this form, including Sea Dragons. Learnt by
solving the puzzle in the Fish Cave.
Spirit Song (Hotkey 7)
This form stops time and lets you move around out of your body. It is only really useful to cross Hot Currents, as you have to return to your body unless you use a Dark Blue Crystal, which teleports your body there. Essential to win in the Arnassi Challenge and to get the Walker Baby Treasure. Learnt by defeating the Mithalan Priests in Mithalas City.
Dual Song (Hotkey 8)
Dual form is powerful but complicated. You can change between Blue and Pink with the Roll movement. Blue can charge and shoot a powerful triple attack that absorbs energy from your enemies. Once you kill three this way, you can charge Pink's attack, which harms every enemy on screen.

Other Songs

Door Song
Written on the wall of the Song Cave along with somme drawings, this song opens a round door not war away from there, giving you access to the Bind Song.
Arnassi Song
Written on the walls of the Arnassi entrance, at the bottom right area of Open Waters, this song activates the Arnassi Challenge, a race against the clock and some... seahorse spirits?
Whale Song
Found at the bottom right area of Open Waters, in a dark cave behind a stone face on the wall, and accessible only in Fish form. The Whale Song lets you enter the Whale down in the Abyss.
Ghost Song
The game soundtrack repeats these notes in all the main themes, and it'sa lso sung by the little ghost's mother. That's the final hint to know how to play it once found in a wall in Sunken City
Cooking: Ingredients & Recipes
Besides singing, Naija's second great skill is Cooking. She has two dishes with her, so she can mix two Ingredients found around the world to create Recipes, three ingredients if she's in a Kitchen, where there's an extra dish (You can also get a third portable dish by beating Simon, an optional Boss). Note that you DON'T need to know a recipe to create it, you must actually find many of them by trial and error.

Ingredients

Can be found in the form of green leaves you can Bind and then grab, in Song Plants you open with the right color note, or after killing enemies. Most enemies always give the same ingredients, being a reliable source.

Recipes

There's a total of 50 Recipes, which lead actually to 47 items as two of the recipes are different ways to produce the same as others (veggie cake & poison loaf). You can find them all in the picture. The table below shows the effects of every item.

Walkthrough: Home & the Song Cave

Verse Cave

Naija starts her adventure in the Verse Cave, a place of relax. Just follow the tunnel to learn the basics, test your singing skill and use it to open your first Song Plants. If you have any doubt check the Basics section of this guide.

The dead end to the right hides a Treasure (check Treasures section), but you can't get it yet. This will happen a lot, as the game will let you open new paths as you acquire power. It would be wise to write down every thing that you find but can't open, move or cross yet, and the Map Markers come in handy.

Secret Cave Passage

Keep following the only possible path. At one point the game will teach you the Shield Song (check Songs section if needed) and you'll meet a strange visitor.

The Vision

You'll be someone else in a dark place full of dangers. You can try to get to the end of the passage or just die, it doesn't matter. You get back to reality and then you can proceed to the end of the Secret Cave Passage.

Home Waters

Explore the area and your home, where you will find a Red Crystal and a Kitchen (Check Basics and Cooking if you want more info). Outside, to the left, there's a big nautilus which you can't fight yet, so avoid it. Every path around is closed somehow except for one, leading to the Song Cave.

Song Cave
Exploring this cave is quite easy and you'll find two important places: some strange big door and some strange writings on the wall. (Am I the only one who thinks about Gandalf here? Melon! That didn't work... Let's try the song written on the wall then: Turquoise, Purple, Yellow, Orange. The door opens.

Inside you'll find a Light Blue Crystal and, when touching it, you'll learn the Bind Song. Now you can move stuff, remove shells and grab plants. Next to that Crystal there's a chasm closed by a rock that now youcan move. Open the way to find a Verse Egg. Sing the corresponding note to open it and permanently increase your life bar. Finish exploring the Song Cave and get the Jelly Lamp, a Treasure, at the top right. Get out of here.
Walkthrough: The Energy Temple
Home Waters

Now that you can move rocks, some new paths are open. Remember to move every rock you see, there are many hidden Song Plants everywhere.

To the southwest lies a new path, moving a rock, leading to the Energy Temple. Follow the red lamps.

The Energy Temple

Move northwest into the temple, saving game at the Red Crystal. Go west and soon you will meet your first and easiest Boss Battle.

Ugly Statue
The statue will create an energy spark, and the spark will sing a note.
Sing and hold the same note till it reacts and shoots you. Keep moving to avoid the shots and repeat the process till the spark is gone.
It is a good idea to use the Shield Song for protection. It's tempting to break the lamps but it's not needed or related to the fight.

Once you win the statue sings a song for you to repeat (see Songs section if needed), sing it and earn the Goth Energy Form. Now you can blow up stuff.

Your next goal is to find two pearls to open a big door, so continue exploring to get them. One is on the hands of a statue not far away, while the other one is more hidden but not hard to find.

During your exploration you will find some closed doors with a statue next to it, holding a pearl. Use your newly acquired Charged Blast against the pearl and the door will open.

You'll also find some light barriers, some blue and some orange, which can be passed through only on the right form: Normal for blue, Energy for orange.

When you get both Pearls to the big floor-door, charge them and it will open. Go deeper to meet the real boss of this place.

Fallen God
Kittyfish wants to eat you, he attacks with paws and bolts, so keep distance while you shoot him hard and make him retreat left.
Once he retreats enough, you will see a Pearl that you can grab and put in some statue on the right. Then you can charge it, activatind the kittyfryer ray.
Now just let the boss get in the way of the ray two times and give him pain. He'll learn and won't get there for a third time, so charge, lure him to attack you then shoot the ray to hit his arm.

After the fight, make sure you get the Tooth lying there, it's another Treasure.
Walkthrough: Mithalas City

Home Waters (Optional)

With the new shooting ability and the Bind Song, it's a good moment to explorer further around.

To the left from Naija's Home there was this big Nautilus that we can shoot and kill now.

Nautilus
Just your average shooting boss. It moves, it shoots, it can ram you. Keep moving to avoid damage and keep shooting till it dies.

That gives access to a little cave northeast of there with a Nautilus Egg, our first pet! Congrats! You just made your entrance into the mom-killing-baby-stealing business!

South from there, another passage east can be found, which needs to charge a Pearl to open a door. Follow the path up to get the Krotite Armor, a dressing option for the Normal form.

You can also go back to the Verse Cave, to that rightmost cave where, behind a rock, you can find the Big Seed, another Treasure.

Open Waters

Back to the adventure. There's an opening on the right side of the Home Waters area with a lonely Pearl there, which you can grab and put into a statue, up from there in another passage. Charge the Pearl and leave west for new areas into Open Waters.

Feel free to explore, the game map is huge and a lot of places are accessible from here now. When you are ready, just go west across two areas of Open Waters to reach Mithalas City. Right before the entrance to the city you will see the Ekritt fish, which you can ride for an Achievement (check Achievements for more info).

Mithalas City (Outside)

Check this area and get inside the houses that have an open ceiling. Inside one of them you will find a Red Crystal and in another one, almost at the west exit, a Kitchen, which will unlock one of Naija's memories. Killing some of the moray releases small leeches that stick to you if you sing their color note and recover your health. When you are ready travel west.

Mithalas City (Inside)

Inside Mithalas there's a nice map full of dangers to explore, a Throne Room with an empty slot and a missing Coin to find. Find it in the depths, surrounded by Poison Guys (some Mithalarians that float and poison you) and Poison Traps. Notice that you can bind the Poison Guys and move them. Grab the Coin, put it back in its slot and take a seat with the royalty (interact with the throne) to open the door to the Mithalas Cathedral, the real challenge. There's also an upper part with hot waters, but you can't go through yet.

Mithalas Cathedral

This map is way bigger and you will find some areas closed by flesh barriers. There's a part where you will see some Mithalarians, the ones that crawl and swim towards you. Note that, when touching a Poison Trap, Mithalarians transform into Poison Guys. You'll find also some Poison Guys creating a barrier, and you'll have to move them with Bind. Take your time to kill enemies before going into an area to avoid getting surrounded. There are three bosses to kill, the Rotten Cores, and their deaths will release barriers and let you go forward.

Rotten Core
Ew! Disgusting meatball will shoot lasers if you hit its eyes.
The strategy is tricky: hit all its eyes at the same time. When all his lasers are on, he will do a 180º turn. Follow the turn to avoid damage! Then a new part will show, and that's where you have to hit with everything you got.
Beware, he will shoot lasers and spawn some rotten tadpoles, and if not killed, they will evolve stronger and shoot. Kill the meatball fast then get rid of them.

Mithalas Cathedral (Underground)

There are two entrances to the underground, and no matter which one you enter, Naija will warn you about not being ready and this being too dangerous. She suggests leaving, but WE DON'T DO THAT HERE.

The right entrance hides a Red Crystal and nothing ese, so not much of use. But the left entrance gets into a theme park of currents where you can go in but not back. There are some recipes here, but don't worry, you can explore later the ways that you miss, as soon you will be able to swim against the current. So chill and go down.

At the end of the ride, Mithala awaits.

Mithala
A tricky fight this one. Mithala shoots blue bolts and can hurt you with his hand if you get near, and you can make him go back by shooting his face.
If he retreats to a certain point, he will try to suck you into his mouth, so keep distance.
Notice a Poison Guy swimming down, next to some poison traps. Bind him and leave him next to Mithala's head, then make him suck it. You need to do this three times.
If Mithala gets next to the poison traps, he will create an enemy which you must lure into the traps. Then you can repeat the sucking process.
One you hit Mithala three times, he will lose his eye and shoot harder. Now just blast him to death.

Now you have the Beast Form. It's the best moment to redo the last part and in the opposite direction and uncover all its secrets. There's a also a shortcut, next to a Red Crystal, from the underground to Mithalas City. Get out for another misterious visit.
Walkthrough: The Kelp Forest
A whole world awaits to be discovered. Feel free to explore with your new powers. Swim against the currents, remove rocks from hidden paths... you can even go to the surface now, or down into the abyss for a certain death but for this guide I'll try to follow a natural order while not wandering in excess. That's why we go to the Kelp Forest now.

Open Waters
Once out of Mithalas City and into Open Waters, go left into a current and use Beast Form to take a path down, activating an Ancient Turtle.

From here, you can go left and up through the first Open Waters area, or you can go up and left through a new Open Waters area. Anyway, you'll get to the Kelp Forest, which has also many areas, and you will know you are there because everything is green.

Kelp Forest

If you get to Kelp Forest from the south, you'll soon meet a GIANT SPIDER. Don't worry, it's big but easy to deal with. It keeps weaving a silk line that slows you down, but just avoid it and shoot, it will leave Spider Eggs every time.

Going up you'll meet some Piranhas and a very much annoying enemy, beware of the Sea Dragon. It moves really fast, hits hard, shoost many bolts and takes some time to kill. Once killed it leaves three ingredients.

Once these two are dealt with, explore the area. There's also a Treasure hidden north of this area, to the right from a sunken ship, but it's better to get it later or you won't even know that you're finding in the dark. Go west to find a Red Crystal. South you can find a dead end in Open Waters with a... Roly Poly?. Have spare time? Kill Poly. Takes time but CAN BE DONE for a Recipe.
North of the Crystal there's a passage to the left that we'll take to the next area of the forest.

In the next area, find an Ancient Turtle north. Then go left following the bottom. At the end, it will go down, through an area with two more Giant Spiders. Just follow the way down till you find a cave and enter...

The Fish Cave

A cave with some cute and colorful fish, a Red Crystal and some Song symbols. Now what? Try singing next to the fish and you will know. Lure the fish to the stone with the symbol corresponding their color, and see how the stone glows. Repeat with all the stones, bringing some fish to each one, and you will learn a new song (see Songs section if needed) obtaining the Fish Form.
We are done here. Try your new skills leaving the place through the narrow path once you exit the Fish Cave.

Kelp Forest

Once out of the Cave, use your new fast form to go all the way north into a new area of the Kelp Forest. Explore while you continue north, fighting another two Giant Spiders and one more Sea Dragon. At some point you'll start seeing some spikey vines, new also spikey enemies, and some kind of spikey sea urchins which will block your way and hurt a lot if touched. Sing to lure them depending on their color and put them out of your way into an area with more of them and lots of currents. While you feel happy for having the Beast Form, make your way to the top of Kelp Forest and go left into a cave.

Inside you'll find a Red Crystal and, going up, a Boss Battle.

Druniad Mother
You woke up mom and she's going to test you, but it shouldn't be hard.
She has three attacks:
First, she randomly throws some spiky seeds quite easy to avoid.
The second attack is about some snake-game beast that follows you while growing and surrounding you. Destroy the head and it's done.
Finally, she sings a note and, when you repeat it, she opens her eyes and shoots some bolts. THAT is the moment when you strike back with energy shots.
After a couple of rounds, she will summon bigger seeds and more snakes, but you can now hurt her all the time, so just keep shooting and stay alive.

After the shortcut you get the Nature Form. Now yo ucan...grow flowers. I expected the vines to move away from my way, but they didn't. At least they don't hurt anymore.

Back to the Red Crystal, you will want to go left and, using flower power on it, go through the Bulb Door. Otherwise you can go all the way back but it is a REAL pain. Anyway, you end in the lower area of Kelp Forest, and the strange visitor will show one more time.

From here, there's one last Kelp Forest area to explore, and you can go there travelling right and up, BUT it's better to go left and up to get some nice stuff. So let's do it.

Back on the upper area of Kelp Forest, follow the right wall (there are some healing tadpoles behind the cavefish if you need them). You'll get to some big red flowers. Use flower power to open any of them, get a pearl, and go norteast to a cave closed by a Pearl Statue. Put the pearl in it, charge blast it and get in. Using yhe Fish Form you'll find a Verse Egg, sing and grab some energy.

Back to the Red Flowers, go right to the next area of Kelp Forest. After crossing a minefield of urchins, explore this area carefully, as you can find some Sea Dragons and you don't want to fight two of them at the same time.

Sprite Cave (Optional)

In the midle of the are there is an entrance to the Sprite Cave. There are the sprites, happily sunbathing just waiting for you to go into Energy form and bl...NO, YOU CAN'T YOU MONSTER. Just grab ingredients, go through a Blue Bulb for a Treasure, the Seed Bag, and save at the Red Crystal if you want. Then leave.

Mergog Cave (Optional)

Back in Kelp, swim northeast and use Fish Form at the top to find the Mergog Cave and, of course, fight the Mergog.

Mergog
Dr. Robotnik will shoot a LOT of bolts when he goes back to the right side. Use Shield and try to avoid a fast death. Then he will wander and you can shoot him. Target the creature, not the stone thing.
He will also charge a laser, but you can swim beneath him to avoid it easily. Keep shooting and it won't be a hard fight.
Trick: His body doesn't harm you but the stone does, so if you stick to the ceiling it can be a very safe place to shoot, except when he shoots loads of bolts, then move.

Wii, another pet! It's a Piranha!
Now we are done with Kelp Forest.
Walkthrough: The Veil & The Sun Temple
Open Waters

We're back in the first Kelp Forest area, where we arrived from south or east. This time we are going east to that one Open Waters area we didn't explore properly, because there's a Verse Egg to find. Just follow the ceiling till some wreckage and take a narrow path up, then move a rock, sing to the egg and leave again through the narrow path. We won't continue east as there are some Hot Currents blocking the way, so let's take a longer route south-left-up through the next Open Waters area. I hope you like crabs.

Once we are back in the upper Open Waters area, but at the other side of the Hot Currents, it's time to go up, UP INTO THE LIGHT! Oh, don't forget the Stone Head Treasure, explore the middle apth of this map. THEN go up!

The Veil

I'm sure you can't wait to reach the surface now, as it's one of the coolest moments in the game. But before you continue up, take a second to go into the narrow path (on Fish form) to get a very interesting recipe. Then you can continue your journey and, finally, cross the Veil in your best Free Willy style. Explore both veil areas and enjoy. There's some interesting stuff around. You can find the Golden Starfish, a Treasure, at the bottom right of the second Veil area, so as right as you can. Also, cimbing up a dry passage will take you to a Ruhk Nest. Shoot it for a Ruhk Egg. You can jump to the water from here for an Achievement.

Li's Cave

First Veil area, right side, there's a cave where you can find Li, A HUMAN! Use Bind to take out his helmet and discover his real face. Beware, Naija, humans are dang...hey, hey, take it easy Naija, what you doin? Ok, you are young and have been lonely for a long time, but...

You learn Li's Song to summon Li and to put him in attack mode. A nice wingman if you need.

On the left end of the veil there's a wall, on the top there's an island, and if you jump you can cross to the other side, finding a Red Crystal and an Ancient Turtle. Then, going down, there's a tunnel to the Turtle cave.

Turtle Cave (Optional)

A cave full of turtles, even a huge Morla-like one. No danger, just some strange floating bubbles that let you go up by jumping from one to another.
From the top big bubble, you can eat some +1 speed item and reach a small one even higher with the Urchin Armor. AND from that one, you can jump diagonally to the top-right to find a Ruhk Nest. If you manage to reach it, and i really mean IF, then you can grab a Ruhk Egg. If you can't, dont feel bad.

You can now leave. Don't worry, the egg is not that important.

Really, let it go. If you want an egg, go to the bottom left of Turtle Cave, move some rocks and take the Turtle Egg, a Treasure.

The Sun Temple

When you finish wandering around and jumping through the veil, find the Sun Temple in the middle of the Veil's right area.

Once inside just follow the path (beware of the shooting crab) and explore the area as much as you can, then the game will tell you where to Roll. Use you Roll ability next to a certain gear and the water level will go up (and down again if you repeat the process). With some more water you can explore the area and find a Crystal on a floating platform on the top right.

Well, now the objective is to take the Crystal to the top left, where some sunlight enters from the ceiling and a sunfish swims in the background. To do so, move the Crystal to the left as much as you can with Bind, lower the water level, move it more to the left, increase the water level, and repeat this process until the Crystal is under the sunlight. The Crystal will shine and fall into the water and now you can Bind it again and take it with you.

If you want, go to the top left again, where the Crystal was originally, and follow the right wall to find a secret passage, there's a Treasuer there, the Sun Key, and also a bulb with a great recipe hiding in the dark.

Now for the real path, go down to the bottom and into the darkness. The light from the Crystal will guide you, allowing you to see a door that shows music symbols. Follow the symbols five times to open it. Then into another dark woom with two exits on the left side. The bottom exit goes outside, to the Veil. We are taking the upper exit now, to a room with some kind of mechanic big... lobsters?

If you grab your Crystal and go through the left hole (where the lobsters come out), a Treasure, the Gear, awaits. Following the dark path takes you to an interactive gear. If you follow the lobsters instead you end at the same place. Roll to increase the water level.

Now there are two paths you can go. The upper right paths takes yo uto the Boss. But the upper left path takes you through a painfully frustrating area of gears that will award you with the second of Naija's memories. Tips: you can bounce on the ceiling too. Naija doesn't fall it she's attached to a surface less than 90º from the horizontal. It's easier in Beast form.
From the last gear at the top right corner, go up along a waterfall to the outside.

Once you get the memory, go back into the temple, grab a recipe from that room, jump through a hole and go through the right way to an area of caves. Be careful, those spikes HURT and the water level raises and drops. Just go on and suvive to the end.

Amerean Abomination
Classical worm boss. It will move around all the screen with a sucking attack (water down!) and a blowing attack (water up!), so just shoot like mad while you avoid it and the spikes.
After some shots it begins shooting, so just one more thing to avoid.
Special attention: when the worm blows you away it can throw you out of the temple through the broken window, forcing you to come back and start the fight again.

Once defeated, it gives you the Sun form, which allows you to travel in the dark. Now you can leave through the window and again into the veil to finish your exploration of the area. There's a Red Crystal on the left.
Walkthrough: Arnassi Ruins & Others
All right, now this is the moment when you have all the necessary forms to travel around Aquaria and explore its more hidden spots and even finish the game. I will not list here all the Treasures, Recipes or Achievements, as they have their own section in this guide, but if they are on the way they'll be mentioned. There are some areas worthy exploring, some Bosses and even a Form, that are not necessary to complete the game and will be explained here.

If you're on a speedrun you can just jump this whole section (and big part of the fun). But, if you really want to get all the best of this game, it's time to find every narrow path, every dark corner, every strong current, exploring the last places before going down into the Abyss.

Octopus Cave

Right after you leave the Sun Temple, at the newly discovered section of the Veil, there's a narrow tunnel. If you follow it (Sun form recommended) you'll get to a cave where you can find a nice new recipe and, even better, a boss.

Octomun
Giant octopus with some annying attacks. It can grab and repeatedly smash you Hulk-style. He can throw a ton of ink turning the screen black, he summons squids and he shoots huge energy balls, which are the real danger.
The only way to hurt him is to get near so he shows his... tongue? Let's just call it weak point. So the best trategy is to grab the ceiling, then swim in front of him while you shoot the weak point, and repeat. That way it won't do all of its attacks and you just have to avoid the balls and maybe a squid. If it uses ink turn into Sun form and use a charged attack to bring in the light.

Now you finally have a really cute pet :)

Back to Home Waters and the Energy Temple

Do you remember that first Red Flower in the Energy Temple? Time to go back there. Go to the left of Home Waters and enter the Energy Temple. If you take a narrow path on the floor, you'll get a Treasure and find a shortcut that's worth taking now. Once at the end of the temple (left and up from the Fallen God), use flower power on the Red Flower, take the Pearl, go left and up to a statue, charge it, face a boss.

Blaster Daddy
Easiest boss ever, not even really big. Just avoid shots and blast it to death. I don't know why they didn't do it like really big, considering what we have seen before.

You receive the last Pet, a Blaster.

If you want you can explore around Home Waters. There's a Treasure, probably the most well hidden thing in the whole game, in the Song Cave: go to the Red Crystal, then left to a giant anemona, then change to Nature form and swim up. I know, not fair at all.

Return to Mithalas

Now to Mithalas Ruins, take a ride on the Ancient Turtle (two stops) to Open Waters. Then get into the first area of Mithalas Ruins and go up all the way and then right to a Blue Blub Door. If you want, on your way, enter a house on the right wall when going up and grab a Trasure and a Recipe.

Go across the Bulb Door with some flower power and prepare for a fight.

Mithalan Priests
The priests who started all this Creator mess. They shoot A LOT of stuff and are vulnerable only when attacking, otherwise they are wandering in ghost mode and hurting you. If you can focus your attacks on one of them it can be easier as they have individual life limits, but they move fast. So not much to think, run around, avoid, shoot like mad and heal yourself.

You get the Spirit form, now you can go through Hot Currents and use Blue Crytals to transport your body. You can try it down there and get a Treasure.

Arnassi Challenge & Ruins

Get out ot Mithalas and, once back in Open Waters, it's time to go south to... more Open Waters! Explore a new area full of enemies while you follow the right wall. The first current takes you to a rock face hiding the Whale Song (enter on Fish, check on Sun). The second current get you to an area full of seahorses, the entrance to the Arnassi Ruins.

In this first area, still Open Waters, explore to find a Treasure in the upper room. Then find a song with some seahorses drawn at the bottom. Singing starts the Challenge, a race around this area with the Arnassi Armor for the prize.
To win, use your fastest form (Fish) and cut some seconds using Spirit form some meters before a Blue Crystal (time stops while in Spirit). Take your prize and go all right to the next area.

Past the Red Crystal and all the way to the bottom right room, go to the left for a Treasure (It's in a hidden passage but it shows in the map). Then go right to find an also hidden narrow path and follow it to an Ancient Turtle. Use it for a ride to a special area in Kelp Forest.

In this area, go left to find some special boss... it's not actually a boss, as there's no battle, it's more like a puzzle, a classic Simon game. Just follow the lights.

Simon the Beholder
Right click on him to activate the game. Then he opens an eye and you quickly sing the right note. Then he adds one note at a time and you must follow the game. Once you play enough notes you win.

You receive a third dish, so you don't need a Kitchen anymore. You can play again for minor prizes (recipes). Go back to the turtle and to the Arnassi Ruins. Then go all the way up to find another Boss, a real one.

Rock Crab
The crab shoots some balls and his arms move up and down. When his arms are down, shoot his eyes. Aftersome shooting he puts arms completely down and vulnerable, then you can shoot them.
Repeat until he loses his arms, then he will jump every time you swim over him. That's the moment to shoot from down, between his legs, to his weakpoint.

You got the Crab Armor, now get out and back to Open Waters.

There's one more map to explore if you go left from here, and it is called... yes, you guessed! Open Waters!. From the Arnassi entrance, go a bit up and left to find the way. This map has a creepy cave inside hiding a Treasure and not much more.

That's it. If you've been followin gthis guide you should've explored everything except for the maps beneath Open Waters, and that's the Abyss. So, last check. You may want to check the other sections of this guide to get as many Treasures or Recipes. Did you go back to that dark cave in Kelp Forest? Did you write down the Whale Song? Once you are completely ready, it's time to go down into the darkness.
Walkthrough: The Abyss & Sunken City
In case you skipped the last part of this walkthrough, you need to go the bottom right of Open Waters. This is one area down from the Open Waters Ancient Turtle. But don't go alone, you'll need Li and he can be found at Home (yours or his). Then, to Open.

Everyone there? Fine, we can move. The first current on the right, as you might know already, takes to a face you can cross in Fish form, then to a cave you can see in Sun form, with the Whale Song. Remember it. Then go all the way down to the next area: The Abyss.

The Abyss

We start at the right side of The Abyss. As always, explore the area and enjoy it. The Abyss is actually not such a big deal, the only problem is that you need to use Sun form a lot to avoid spikes. But there are also glowing creatures and plants around.

There's another Abyss area on the left, which you can access from Open Waters from the north or going left from here, your choice. But first, I think it's worthy to explore some optional areas here too and find the last memory.

Ice Cavern, The Frozen Veil & The Bubble Cave (Optional)

So go all the way right and down to the bottom to some Hot Current, Cross in Spirit Form (if you skipped that part and don't have it, why are you not skipping this one? SHOW SOME COHERENCE!). The path east takes you to the Ice Cavern. It's pretty, it's full of Ice chunks that break into smaller ones in a Pang style, and sometimes leaving an exclusive ingredient, which is also... an Ice Chunk. You'll find also two Ice Cream recipes. Just follow the cave up to the Frozen Veil.

Once in the Frozen Veil, keep exploring to find a Red Crystal on the right side and a cave on the left, out of water. Yep, climbing time. It's hard, but possible, and I found it easier using the mouse to target where I wanted to land. Try to jump from the top of the leftmost crystal to the leftwall, then right to the ceiling crystal. Once there, left-right a bit to go up nd it's done. Then careful on the bubbles, and into the Bubble Cave.

Only one way in the Bubble Cave, and it's up. And at the top, a Boss.

Shrimp Mommy
Not hard but tricky. The shrimp will throw you some bombs that get red and then explode, and has no weak points.
Use Normal form to Bind a bomb, then quickly change to Nature form and put a cucumber up the shrimp's ass. Drop the bomb and move aside as the boss fall sinto your bubble and eats its own bomb medicine. Do it three times to win.

Grab your Verse Egg and leave back to the Abyss.

The Whale (Optional)

If you go to the bottom of the center of the Abyss area, you may find a Lantern. If you see an ugly fish with a lantern, nope, it's not that one, but you are near. Once you find it, you can light it with Sun power (and find an Ancient Turtle on your right). It will open a door and there you'll meet the Whale. You can explore around for a Recipe and a hidden narrow path on the top left of this cave with a funny secret area. When you are ready, sing the Whale Song and you can go in.

Inside the whale you can enter one hose full of tadpoles and another one with a friendly octopus. There are also four lanters lying around and , under the tadpoles house, a Verse Egg.
If you light the lantern by the octopus it will teach you a song. Play that song on the lanters outside of the house and the wall behing the octopus will open, so you can grab a Pearl.

Take the pearl out of the whale, right through the Hot Current (you can change to Spirit, ue the Blue Crystal, and still keep the Pearl), go through the lantern door (open it with another lantern on this side) and up into a curvy tunnel in the middle of this map, to a statue here you put the Pearl and find Naija's last memory.

If you finished exploring, thats it for this first part of the Abyss, so go to the left area to continue.

The Abyss - Left

This second area of The Abyss has also some optional stuff but the main goal is going down to the final part, through a Blue Bulb Door and then through the bottom exit. But, if you want to explore a bit first, there are two Treasures around, one in a hidden cave (unmapped), right between the two entrances to this area from the right one. The cave has two entries so just hit the wall following it from where you enter. There' another hidden cave with a new Recipe (see section if you don't find it).

Left from the bottom-right entrance there's also a cave with a Boss. A big one.

King Jelly
OMG that's a Big Jellyfish. Jellofish brings death from above and traps you soon, so make sure you are ready before it's late to run away. The weak point to blast it is a part of the eye that is not protected, but it is always turning, so shoot like hell and try to create a line of fire.
Jello will drop pink jellyfishes that are quite annoying, as they distract your blasts from the main target. Jello will also shoot three electric rays and turn them in both directions.
A good way to do this is to shoot as much as you can in Energy form, but then change to Beast form to eat some pinkies and clean the area, plus they heal you! Keep switching and shooting till it's done.

Get the Jellyfish Armor and leave. That's all for this area, so find the Blue Bulb Door and go through. You'll find that the bottom path is blocked, but there's a path left going to a strange modern device and the symbol on Li's sub and home. Finally the man is useful! So good that you followed the guide ad brought him! If yo udidn't, you can go to the nearest Turtle or, even cooler, go up two areas through the Snail Cave and one left to Home Waters. One way or another, bring Li to this place, I'll wait.

Once the way is open, you arrive to Sunken City.

Sunken City & Boiler Room

Follow the way and explore. Find a Red Crystal, a Costume through a Hot Current (Use Spirit form), and... a ghost? Follow the kid to a dead end, where he will follow you. Take him out of there in Sun form and listen to the singing woman. Isn't that one of the game's themes?

Continue to find the child being harrassed by three bald ghosts who just turn into ugly beasts, yeah kill them and continue. One more time you find the child and a song written on the wall. Well, it's not. It's just the notes in a shape. If you ever lpayed the game song, the one sung by the woman some seconds ago, that symbol appeared. Now play it to continue. Save at the Red Crystal and get into the Boiler Room.

Now you need to explore and take three balls of... clay? and give them to thild, who will make a statue. On your way there will be some pink jellyfish that can't be shot (BUT can be eaten). Great, you woke up a Boss.

Mom & Dad
Some kinda big Frankenstein and a flying Priestess, nice combo. He's armored and every three attacks (rams or jumps) she goes to his head and drops out a pink jelly. Eat the jelly, then avoid her to touch him by shooting her when she goes to the head again, she'll move aside temporarily. THEN you can shoot him with your energy shots.
Important: If you ate the other jellys you might have different shots that will NOT work. So use all of them, then use only the red shots you get from the jelly in the fight.
AFter some shooting he will become vulnerable all the time and she will start shooting at you like hell. Keep shooting and survive. It's tricky.

Finally, ready for a reward after this fi...oh. Well that was unexpected.

Go all the way back through the Sunken City, followed by Ghosty, again into the Abyss, and now to that bottom path that was closed before. It won't be anymore. There we go. It's payback time.
Walkthrough: The Body
The Body

Yes, thats a spine. Yes, red cells. Yes, that too. Welcome inside.

The first path left takes you to a Red Crystal. After that just go on through the right current. You will find Li, trapped, and Ghosty next to him. Continue your trip to a big room with viruses. From this room you can go left, right or down.

On the left side, no matter which exit you take (the lower path is darker and the enemies are more horrible), there's another area to explore where you fill find two Light Blue Crystals, keeping inside the spirits of the Prince of Mithalas and a Krotite Warrior. Grab them both and come back here.

On the right side there are also two exits but they take you to different areas, holding one spirit each. The upper area has a really funny corridor where I recommend using Fish form and RUN, then you release the Druniad Spirit. In the lower area you'll find the spirit of an Erulean Messenger and a nice Recipe.

Back to the central room, go up to where Li is trapped and sing the notes you hear to free him and earn Dual form. This form has two modes that you can switch between with the Roll button (R), and two special attacks, one for each mode. Greeny mode can charge a powerful triple shot, which will absorb energy from enemies on death. That energy charges the other attack on Pinky mode. Ater three kills with Greeny, charge with Pinky to unleash a screaming attack that affects all the enemies around. Time to go to the bottom exit, kill that dark...organ? with the screaming attack, and go even deeper into the Body.

The next area is still The Body, my bet is the digestive system, an is a long, long corridor full of enemies. Along the corridor you will find three more of those organs blocking your path, and you need the screaming attack to kill them, so charge Dual form even if you prefer Energy. Beware of a room full of nautilus, and I mean FULL.

At the end of this you will reach the last area of Aquaria. Yep. A Red Crystal on one side, and Blue Bulb Door on the other that will take you to some ingredients and the last Ancient Turtle, a chance to move out of here and get full of healing stuff. It would seem the game is telling you something.

This is that moment when you decide if you want to collect everything in th egame, if you are missing Recipes, Pets, Treasures, if there's something you didn't explore and would like to. This is the last chance to do everything you ever wanted to do in Aquaria before the final confrontation. So check the other sections of this guide if you want to, ride that Turtle to get everythin you need, and once you are ready, come back here.

The Creator

I assume you are really, really charged with healing stuff, poison-curing stuff, a well-working mouse, hotkeys ready and phasers on kill mode. You will go through a series of hard battles with no save option, so If you think you could get some more tasty cakes and healing poultices, go back and grab them. Once ready go right through the bosses gallery to meet...

The Creator (Original Form)
There he is, throwing those annoying jellyfish we saw in the Big Jellyfigh fight, and also some big nautilus and a deadly blast-rain.
Just shoot his face as much as you can, don't be afraid of short distances. Avoid the enemies and, when the blast rain, keep moving and dashing next to him to avoid as many hits as possible. He'll fall faster than you think, or at least his face will...

The Creator (Faceless)
This one gets harder, now the Creator will follow you around trying to grab you with his arms, while shooting poisoning balls. But his worst attack is a laser that REALLY hurts.
Dash to avoid the poisoning balls while you continuously shoot his face and move around to avoid being grabbed (if that happens, roll!). If he shoots his laser, you need to go to the other side of him, as he can´t shoot vertically. Keep your health safe with Leeching Poultrices and Tasty Cakes untill he falls down.

The Creator (Ugly Bug)
I don't know what he is now but I don't really wanna know. Follow him through the tunnel and use Sun form to continue into the darkness. When he stops, shoot him and he'll move.
Once in the dark, big area, keep throwing light charges to find him. Then use Energy form to shoot him while you approach, he'll open his mouth and get hit in the eye. Be careful, once hurt he will move and can ram you. Follow him three times and he will run into the right small room. Shoot him a bit more while approaching to hit his eye.

The Creator (Reborn)
Now with the bug dead, itseems another small creator comes out of it. And this is not even his final form! He'll sing notes, which will transform into energy balls thrown towards you.
Sing the notes to make the balls disappear, play them in order and in good timing to avoid getting damage. Singing before the ball is shot will not work. If you sing three notes in order, making the three balls disappear without taking any damage, the Creator will be hurt. Repeat the process. You can even touch the Creator and take the center of the room.

The Creator (God Mode)
Finally a godly battle in the middle of nowhere, with a humongous foe and lots of stuff flying around. He'll throw energy balls and summon enemies.
First shoot his face to uncover his hidden weird eye. Then use Sun power and the eye will shine, making it vulnerable. Shoot it with Energy form until it becomes black, and finally go in normal mode and use Bind on the eye. GROSS!

Not over yet? Now you should check the Creator's torso to find... THAT. The fight changes. Now he shoots energy balls from his hand as before, but also a HUGE RAY OF DEATH from that mouth you discovered. Luckyly Li is back with us, and that means we can use Dual form.

When the torso mouth opens, quickly shoot a Dual (Blue) charge to the head inside and MOVE AWAY! Timing is important. If you hit the head, the mouth will soon release three nautilus. Kill them with Dual (Blue)form to get energy and then roll into Dual (Pink) form, go up to his head and release all your power to really hurt the boss. Repeat this process three times and, finally, victory is yours!

Somewhere in the future
After the ending sequence, if you are patient enough AND you got all three memories (See next section for more info), you will continue playing in an unknown spiral-shaped map. Just follow the way to see the last part of the real, enigmatic and weird real ending.

Sadly we can be sure that there won't be a second part for Aquaria, so we don't really know how the story would have continued... but there are some Community Mods to help with that that I invite you to try.

Congrats, you finished Aquaria!
Treasures, Pets, Verse Eggs & Memories
The world of Aquaria hides four different optional collectible things you can find. TREASURES are totally useless but cool to have. PETS will follow and help during the game, VERSE EGGS increase your health and MEMORIES will change the ending of your adventure.

Mithalas City
First area of Mithalas, the one with round houses. One of the houses (hanging, right area) has a Kitchen in it and a Memory.

The Abyss
Get inside the Whale (need the Whale Song), solve the lanterns puzzle (check the octopus for the song), then grab the pearl next to the octopus and bring it to a Pearl door not far away in that area of the Abyss. Then use Energy form.
Aquarian Language
When travelling through Aquaria, you'll find many unreadable texts written on the walls. You have no need of them for the game, but they are actually real texts making sense if you discover how to decypher them.

It's actually simple: If you pay attention to the Main Menu, the buttons are first in this language and then they change, but you can realiza the symbols repeat for the same letters. So, it's just a substitution code. If you feel like it you can write down the symbols and translate every text... of you can just check some the solutions here.

I'm not putting every carved text in the game as there are lots of them (but i might keep adding them if there's still space for more content), and many are irrelevant for the lore (like inscriptions on different subjects of a library), but you should be able to get all of the alphabet from the examples and discover the rest by yourself when you find them.

Home Waters

"Home"

Open Waters

"Mithalas beckons you"

"Does
absolution
lie above
the waves?"

"Beware"

"My dearest
rest in peace."

Mithalas City (Outside)

"Mithalas" (this one is actually translated by Naija, who seems able to understand the language but is too lazy to read the other stuff for us).

Mithalas Cathedral

"Eternal", "Heretics"

"His wrath"

"As he creates
so will he destroy.
Watching us from every shadow
he is the Abyss taken form.
To new waves we must escape. - Sauguin"

"You have failed me.
Your hunger will consume you.
Feast on the flesh of your own children."

"Fear the Creator."
Secrets & Curiosities
Meet your Creators!

Down in the Abyss, after meeting the Whale, you can go all left and then up in Fish form to find an unmapped and hidden narrow path. Take it to a screen with... Alec Holowka and Derek Yu! Well, some developers-resembling fish, at least.

The Coward!
It's quite a funny thing that the developers included a unique fish that has absolutely nothing to do with the story, whose existence you don't even know and whose particular skill is to run away at ful speed as soon as he sees you. It would be not important except for the fact that it's the key to a Steam Achievement. So if you want to hunt him, visit the second area of Kelp Forest (the one with the Ancient Turtle) and wander in Fish form, the only way to keep the Coward on screen, and then BLAST HIM!

Free Hugs!
One thing that not everyone discovers is that, if Li is with you and you just stay next to him, Naija and Li hug each other (JUST HUG). Then you might find difficulties to move, because in this "hug mode" they move by singing like when riding a Seahorse. Not really useful and you might have to change form to get out of there, but still cute.

Not-so-hidden Files
If you open your aquaria folder, you will discover that every art in the game is right there, in the gfx folder, for you to be seen. If you look carefully you can even find unused stuff, like one more of the Creator's forms (form3) that didn't make it into the game. You can also find other unused creatures and even the art shown in the ending credits.

Translating Aquarian
In the section above this one in the walkthrough you can find everything about the Aquarian Language, but there's even one more trick to translate everything into English. If you go into the gfx folder you will find two files for the Aquarian Alphabet (aquarian.png) and its english counterpart (aquarian_alt.png). Swap both names and the game will show every carving in English!

Modding & Community
This is not exactly a secret but it's something i wanted to include. Even though there is no possibility of an official sequel to Aquaria, due to many reasons like the desaparition of Bit Blot and the deceasing of Alec Holowka, there is however a community that keeps the game alive and creates new content, offering different mods and even an unofficial sequel in chapters. You can create your own mods or play the available ones, and everyone will be glad to help you.

You can find more about this open community here:

in the sunken city, between the woman singing and boy getting bullied by ghosts, you have to guide a ghost girl with flowers of the nature form, was stuck on that

Happy to read that, it also took me a long way to complete the game after a first try years ago, and this time I decided to write the guide while i played.
I hope you can finish it now!

it wasnt until reaching the bottom of this guide and seeing the comments that i realized how recently this was posted. i played aquaria as a kid soon after its release, around '08, but never beat it because the abyss scared me too much.
incredible that 16 years later someone made the walkthrough i wish i had with me back then, maybe now ill get around to finishing this game <3

Man, I started playing the game a few months ago and I quit because I found everything too obtuse. This guide really helped put some stuff together so I can continue enjoying the game. Thanks!

I'm glad you found it useful, it's a great little game worth every minute. Once you finish it you might want to try the mods and meet the community behind them :)

Going through this game without much of a real guide was a nightmare when I played it on stream just a few months ago. You are a hero & a godsend for if/when I grab the last couple of achievements and anyone else going to play this game. Thank you so much from me & anyone in the future wanting to play this.
