Combat Basics
GateTail Type Chart
Created based off of the information that the game gives you from the "Elemental Check" action.
Thankfully as of the latest update, elemental attacks are usable with every loadout instead of being exclusive to the Staff! The way to use specialty elemental attacks is to have an Elemental Asper of the coresponding type, apply it in battle, then use Elemental Surge for 50 MP and 50 TP. Each element has a set of 3 attacks that have a 10 TP, 25 TP, and 50 TP attack with various side effects.
The only elements you have access to at all times are Physical and Magic.

If the information seems off in a few places, ask Jofini why it works like that.

Good Items
DISCLAIMER!!
All of these choices are my personal prefrence as someone who doesn't like to sacrifice the Agility Stat. If you do not care for Agility, feel free to make your own list!

Weapons
Early Game: Wolferion Claws, Staff
Mid Game: Opal Bow, Aquamarine Ocarina
End Game: Flail of Heroes, Arrowstorm, Aquamarine Ocarina

Armor
Early Game: Adventures Clothing, Buckler, Cap
Mid Game: Shield, Helmet, Aventurine Necklace
End Game: Checkerboard Shield, Sorcerer's Cap, all of the below besides Cap

Accessories
Early Game: Warning Bell
Mid Game: Citrine Boots, Snake Ring, MP Keeper (!!), Florid Vines
End Game: Warding Bell

Consumables

Ashes: Great for saving time healing yourself out of battle
Pincher: Substitute for Piercing Strike early game
Elemental Aspers: ESSENTIAL for strategizing during Boss Fights
Ink: Disables enemy skills for a few turns
HP Restoring Items (in general): Great for stalling in case you get backed into a corner with no way to restore MP

Sudo-Upgrades

Prison: An infinite-use 75% MP heal that you get right before the Ultraplera. INSANELY good and basically invalidates every MP restoring item past the point you obtain it.

You Did It!: An item that does variable damage, but usually a decent amount. Obtained by getting all 10 Eggs in Peakland falls.
Josh
This is the tutorial boss, so it usually doesn't take too much skill to win as he is going easy in this fight. Josh can use many of the basic attacks you yourself learn, as well as heal you at various points in the fight. These are semi-random, and if they are scripted I don't want to bother to find out which turns they happen on.

Requirements
- Level 15
- Literally any gear. Just buy some. The game is teaching you to buy gear.

Oh, It's Jerry
The Octopus cursed to live longer than the rest of its kind. This also applies to his fight, as rather than healing you at various points in the fight, this bastard will heal stall you at around 33% HP with bubble recover, meaning this becomes more of a war of attrition and out damaging.
I would recommend using type advantages to help with damage, but this early on its nowhere close to required. Just out damage his healing and heal yourself when appropriate.

Requirements
- Level 20 - 25
- The best gear from Wulf's shop, just to make it easier
Jackson
Jackson, the hothead (lol) designed to burn you to a pile of ashes.
Here, we see the first actual use case for ASPERS. The elemental aspers change your elemental type and give you elemental attacks of that type if you use Elemental Surge and go to the Element tab of attacks. Simply using an Asper that the boss is weak to can completely counter bosses that lack a diverse set of attacks (such as jackson!). The hardest part is actually finding them, as they are a rare drop from specific enemies. Thankfully, if you buy the Crown item from Wulf's shop and equip it, it doubles item drops from enemies, making the search much less painful.
There is a convenient cheat sheet for the type chart at the top of this guide, but for convenience sake, use Water or Wind aspers against Jackson. After using the asper and Elemental Surge ability going to the newly revealed Element tab will have moves of that type that cost both MP and TP. Use these to melt through Jackson in record time.
You may also consider getting the Ruby Necklace from Susie Sniper in the desert, but this is not required in the slightest

Requirements
- Level 30 - 35
- Water/Wind Asper
- Better defensive gear from Lostside Village

YA BOI GARETH
GARETH THE SWAGGIEST IN THE LAND WOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Gareth is the first boss to pull a switcharoo on you by changing the battle system itself. It switches from purely turn based, to an ATB system.
SPEED IS EVERYTHING.
The higher your speed, the more times you can act before Gareth can. This fight is made even easier with a Life Asper, but really the main focus is SPEED, which you don't get from many magic items.
For defense, grind against Foozaps in the coastal area with the Crown for a Thunder Asper to make this fight even smoother.

Requirements
- Level 40
- OPAL BOW (SPEED IS EVERYTHING)
- Any other gear that raises speed, or does not lower it (such as the warning bell from Wulf)
- A Life/Thunder Asper for defense

Pictured: Peak Character Design
Ultraplera
Oh hey, another water boss
Using the games CHECK option in the SPECIAL category, the game just straight up tells you that this boss is somewhat of a tutorial for magic attacks. My tip for that is to backtrack to Pretoria to buy the Staff from Wulf ASAP (if you haven't already). It's the cheapest you'll find this item (especially if you do his sidequest for the discount) and it's one of the only weapons that raises magic. Just spam Magic Pulse II and you'll be good.

Requirements
- Level 45 - 50
- Aquamarine Ocarina (see beginning of guide)
- Thunder Asper
- MP Keeper (optional)

This fight is also unique in that it's technically a gauntlet of multiple fights, as before fighting the Ultraplera you have to deal with two of Isa's sharks.
You can take advantage of this part of the fight by gaining around enough experience right before you level up. That way when you win the fight against the sharks, you level up and get fully healed.

First Phase

Second Phase (Triggers at Half Health, Attempts to Heal Stall, but takes EVEN MORE DAMAGE from Magic)

Elizabeth
Fight's kinda easy tbh
It's even funnier because I think she can run out of MP with no way to recover it, so she just kinda stares at you until you damage her into her 2nd phase. A Dark Asper is ESPECIALLY broken here because it's cheapest attack acts as a Magical Drain while dealing massive damage to Elizabeth. Its honestly hilarious how easily she goes down with this strat.

Requirements
- Level 50
- Dark Asper
- A Brain

Side Boss (and Friends)
BEFORE YOU CONTINUE AFTER ELIZABETH, there are a few optional bosses you can do before the point of no return.

Traciax
If you steal all the items and gold in the southern homes of the plants of Lostside Village, you spawn the Traciax, Entitlement's Ruin. While you can attempt to fight this thing anytime, It isn't recommended you do it the second you enter the village.
If you have magic drain, this is an excellent strategy.

Requirements
- Level 30+
- Fire Asper

Side Boss
In the shop before Elizabeth, you can buy a key to the riverside shed for 15k gold. This unlocks the random shed on the side of the river right before you fight Jerry.
This boss is dark type, so you need a Light Asper to deal with him easily. You can find them as a drop from a Garuda (or a Raah??? idk it looks like that weird ostrich with a face on its chest), which is found in Dryland Dunes (pictured below)
This is also one of the bosses that got massively buffed from the 2.0 update.
Also gives you the "Side Box" which is required for a secret ending.

Requirements
- Level 40 -50+
- Light Asper

Second Phase

Actor1_3

This fight is unlocked when you SPARE JERRY
After you spare Jerry and end the fight, he can be found in the last major room of Pretoria (the one with the key in the center of the pond) and he can be found by the pond to help unlock that key. This is the key that unlocks the tent at the beginning of the game. Entering it, you can fight Actor1_3.

This Boss changes up the battle system and the visuals. It uses the default battle system, which is from a third person perspective rather than a first person perspective. This also brings back the ATB system that Gareth uses. YOU NEED TONS OF SPEED LIKE GARETH. Lots of speed can mean you can act two or even three times before the boss can act once, and on Extreme difficulty this is required.
Aspers are pointless, so the strat revolves around managing his Double Attack. This does enough damage to ONE SHOT you on extreme difficulty. To survive this at full health, I would leveling up until around 2000 max hp, which may vary if you have used any HP Stat Souls in your playthrough. Speaking of which, Pretoria is the area you get these things, so grinding in the area outside the tent isn't pointless, as you will still be gaining hp with the acquired souls.
If you need a turn by turn run-down, Alternate between Damage/Healing on the first turn, and the Scream action on your second. Scream drastically lowers the enemy's attack for their next attack, meaning if you use it before a Double Attack, you will survive it no problem.

PRO TIP: The reward for this fight (Flail of Heros) has the HIGHEST BASE ATTACK FOR ANY WEAPON, baring the hand thing in snowtown

Requirements
- Level 50 OR 2000 Max HP
- Opal Bow
- Any gear that raises speed, or doesn't lower it.
- MP Keeper (optional, but very useful and unobtainable after entering snowtown)

A Special Guest
ITS ME
RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
EY LOUIS IM IN GATETAIL

To encounter, buy the Leek-Shaped Key from that random shop in Lostside.
Find the door in the first major room of Dryland Dunes

Requirements
- Level 45 - 50
- A diverse move set

Inconspicuous Waterfowl
In this first phase, it is simply a duck that quacks at you every turn.

However, at around 80% HP, the real fight begins.

Hackstr
With a leek in hand (bill), he gains a few new moves.
On preparation, he will hit you with Leek Peak, which does over half of your health on extreme mode.
However, the main move he will rely on is Playtest
This move has a variety of effects
It can
- Stun you
- Disable HP Regeneration
- Disable Magic
- Disable Physicals
- Disable Specials
- Increase MP cost
- Increase the amount of damage you take
- Enrage you (force you to attack for a few turns)
- Do nothing
- Say "Hi Youtube! You should play the hit game: 'GateTail'."

At around 30% HP, he goes to his final form
Nothing changes mechanically, but a modified audio byte from Hackstr's GateTail video plays during the transition.

Upon defeat you can Mercy him to gain his Leek, which gives you the moves Slash, Thrust, and Playtest (exactly how it works in the fight itself)

MY TEN METRE SMASH!!!!!
Its the Glitchy Tree.
Fun Fact: Every time this fight way playtested, it had to be nerfed.

The gimmick of this fight is that its a total RNG-fest.
Keep mashing your strongest, most MP-Efficient attack and eventually RNGesus will smile upon you.

YOU CAN GAIN (kill) THIS BOSS WITHOUT ANY EFFECT ON ANY ENDING, SO TAKE THE FREE XP

Requirements
- Level 60 - 65
- MP Keeper (at this point in the game it is impossible to backtrack and buy it, so while this isnt required to win, it is still very helpful)
- a nat20 in wisdom saving throws irl

Gea
The Mountain Queen.
The gimmick with this fight is that you lose heavy amounts of TP every turn, so if you were relying on that to attack (or recover MP) then you will be out of luck. It is a bit of a walk, but if you lack MP restoring items, backtrack to Snowtown and get some.
This fight is very clean and simple due to not having access to TP, so just get your highest DPS weapon and heal strategically.
You can also use Wind/Water Aspers for the defensive boost, but this is not required.

Requirements
- Level 70 - 75

Elijah
Elijah, the gold chaser.

FUN FACT, YOU CAN COMPLETELY SKIP THIS FIGHT IF YOU SPEND 15,000 GOLD AT KERMARVEL
(For the record, spending 10k on the key pieces to skip the minigames does not count towards this total)

This fight is fairly trivial with the right steps. The game gives you the choice between Kermarvel and the Dark Forest, and you can do them in any order. Both paths account for this and are a bit weaker as a result. I feel the ideal pathing is Kermarvel first and the Dark Forest second, as the forest has actual enemies you can gain to ready yourself for the fight at the end of that area.
Elijah is immune to Magic attacks, so using a Fire Asper would only be for the defensive boost.

Requirements
- Level 70 - 75
- High Physical Attack

Ghost Man
The polar opposite of Elijah, in the sense that he is a ghost, and is therefore immune to Physical Attacks.
Use a Light Asper if you have one leftover from grinding in Dryland Dunes.
Spam magic.
You may also choose to gain (kill) Ghost man once the fight is over, but the choice doesn't end up mattering as he dies no matter what.

Requirements
- Level 75 - 80
- Light Asper

Ariana
Another pretty basic boss. Please comment below if there is a gimmick I forgot to mention (my memory is a little hazy)
Magic isn't required, even if this guide make it seem like it is.

Requirements
- Level 75 - 80
- Life/Thunder Asper

Anthony
Y'wanna know whats funny?
This is the only boss in the whole game you can run from, and it basically has the same effect as sparing him. I personally don't think there's any point in killing him or engaging in his fight.

Besides that, just use check to find the type is his, then use an asper that is effective against him.

Requirements
- Level 85 - 90

Jacob
Your FINAL TEST
This boss has a variety of things he can do to you, such as disabling abilities, reducing max HP, and more. Earth Aspers do help a bit.

IF YOU ARE DOING THE TRUE ENDING, MAKE SURE TO TURN BACK TO HAVE DINNER WITH JOSH AT THE DINE IN AT SNOWTOWN BEFORE YOU FIGHT JACOB

Requirements
- Level 90 - 100 (you can go over level 100 btw)

In the neutral ending version of this fight, he will attempt to hold onto life after dying for around 10 turns. Damage does nothing, just heal stall until he falls.
HER
MY NAME IS
ASHLYN RONZION
I don't have much to say at this point. You most likely know the gameplay loop to get through bosses, and with your level set so high it hardly matters at this point.
Light is weak to Physical moves, so the Mace you get from Actor1_3 is the most effective.

Requirements
- Playing through GateTail

True Ending Final Boss
FRED
yeah ofc its Fred who else would it be
This fight is unique because YOU HAVE A SECOND PARTY MEMBER WOOOOOOOOOOO
Fred will basically only go after Ashlyn, so it's up to you to keep both of you healed, as once Ashlyn goes down the fight is as good as lost.
You have a new menu option below Special, and that is the only way to progress the fight. After clicking this option enough times the true name of your main character, Rein, will now have a 100 TP move attached to that option, and Ashlyn will have the option to help fill your tp gauge by 50 at a cost. Manage TP, and your party's HP, and Fred is as good as defeated.

Requirements
- Doing the stuff from the Objective Notebook, if you got that at the start of your playthrough
- Keep Going

Fred Ending Exclusives
This ending doesn't change much, only really changing the beginning and ending of the game and not much else (especially when you get to SnowTown)

Gatersaur
A mockery of everything Josh has made, this stupidly OP dino was made to be a REWARD for you!
He can be found at the crossroads for Wulf's shop if you go north to the room simply called "Fred"
Defeating him does take a lot of grinding in the starting area of the game.
To make it easier, first start the sidequest with Wulf and defeat the Treespider Queen to get the Wolferion Claws. Then, go ahead a bit to get the Buckler from the end of the hay maze. After that, find a Life Asper from either a random drop or the freebie you get for clearing the Tutorial Temple.
You also don't need to spend turns attacking him at all with the right gear. The Buckler from Wulf's shop next door has a 10% counter chance. So, if you just heal stall the whole fight, you can kill the Gatersaur with recoil damage, and I think that's funny.

The most effective way to do this fight is as follows.
Turn 1: Life Asper
Turn 2: Clear Mind
Turn 3: Elemental Surge
Turn 4: Clear Mind
Turn 5+: Sweetgrass
Make sure to heal if you ever get to 50% HP inbetween these steps. Just simply use Sweetgrass every turn until the Gatersaur dies from recoil damage.

Requirements
- Level 20 - 25
- Life Asper
- Buckler
- Wolferion Claws (from Wulf's sidequest for the extra defense)

and for it to spawn at all
- Talk to Fred at every opprotunity
- DO NOT LEAVE THE SWAMP. HE WILL DESPAWN WITH A SOUND EFFECT IF YOU LEAVE

After defeating him,
Fred will give you a proposal.
To initiate this ending, you must accept.

Much, Much later

ULTRAFRED
With an entire journey's worth of experience in his hands shared by you, he now has the power to destroy GateTail in a matter of seconds. All you can do is helplessly watch and fend for yourself as he gives you a fight worth remembering.
He will spawn 4 clones of himself, take these out as soon as you can.

Requirements
- Defeat Gatersaur
- Accept the frog's proposition

Gain Ending Exclusives
!!! SPOILERS AHEAD !!!
This ending is pretty widely considered the most impactful one so only come back here if you need help once reaching a boss.

SAVE THE LAND
Elizabeth is fighting back against your tyranny to SAVE THE LA- you get it
Very similar to her base fight, just with more damage. Just spam dark moves against her new form and it'll bleed all the same

Requirements
- Level 50+
- Dark Asper
- The Ability To Press The [Z] Key On Your Keyboard Multiple Times In Succession

Ariana
Yep, every other boss goes down pretty fast huh
For the forseeable future, fights are no longer about dealing enough damage to win and rather lasting enough turns to win. Just heal stall Ariana until her will breaks.

Requirements
- Gain EXP

Jacob
Outlast him

Requirements
- Gain EXP

Josh
FINALLY
A WORTHY OPPONENT
OUR BATTLE WILL BE LEGENDARY

This fight is unique as you cannot damage Josh at all.
Instead, he summons hoards of dinosaurs of his own creation at you, and it is your job to take them out in an order that keeps you from dying. All your moves to attack multiple enemies at once have been disabled due to Josh's poison.
Try to take out the dinos that inflict status conditions like bleed, poison, or burn first, as that damage is calculated as a percentage, not a flat number.

Eventually, he will run out of dinos, and that is when you will strike.
Keep going.

The Freak Squad
Each of these little guys all have increased stats compared to the areas they spawn in, so lets rapid fire each one of them.

Scrynosar
A 1% encounter in the first big room of Pretoria (the one with the locked tent with Actor1_3 inside).
Increased stats across the board.
Drops the Scrynosar Jaw, which sells for quite a lot.

Butterflie
Random butterfly you can encounter in the room in lostside where you first get on a boat.
Heavily increased stats as per usual
USE A DARK ASPER TURN ONE.
it will outspeed you and spam Energy Burst, so doing this first is a must.
This thing will also drain all of your MP at once and drain your HP, however I found the strongest dark type move you have will one shot him.
Drops "The Butterfly" which fully restores MP, buffs MP, and increases recovery.

Randy
1% encounter found in Mount Vulcan.
Little guy that does so much damage the number bounces across the screen.
Kills you instantly.
Drops "Randy's Gun" which drastically lowers every stat but drastically increases attack.

Best ways to take him on is to equip the Warning Bell found in Wulf's shop, then using Ink to permanently disable his one attack. He does die in one attack, but he has a 75% evasion chance, so using ink to give yourself as many chances to attack as possible is required.
or you could just attack him turn 1 and win like a chad

Kermit the Log
Rare (and exclusive) encounter on the Isle of Kermate.
Barely does any damage, but has astronomically high defense, magic defense, and HP.
Drops his Log, which heavily increases defense and HP but not much else.

Use status effects like the poison from the Venom item or bleed from the moves Claw Cut and Deep Cut usable with the Wolfiron Claws. Once he's at 1hp from re-applying status, finish him off with Piercing Strike, or an item that goes through defense.

Bob
1% encounter found in Oceania.
Crazy High Defenses, use piercing strike and bring an Ice/Thunder asper for defense
Has the move "Counter Spikes" which means if you chose to attack on the turn he uses it, you take damage instead.
Drops Puffer Spikes, which lets you counter all attacks for 5 turns.

2HAT
2 HAT
2 HAT
2 HAT
2 HAT

Found in the cellar in SnowTown, which you unlock by going to the south most shed in the west room of the town. It should place you in a black void for lore reasons, then spit you out, in which case you can go pick up the key and use it on the grate in the center of town.
You move pretty slow down there, but just keep moving and eventually he'll find you.
There are 2 of them, one is weak to Physical attacks, and one is weak to Magic.
If you use the item "Ink" on both of them, it completely shuts them down and trivializes the fight.
Defeating them gives you 2 "2hat" headgear.

Mr. Noun
1% encounter found in the Dark Forest.
Dark type, although at this point in the game, if you go ahead one area (the Serrageti) there are a few light type enemies that can occasionally drop a light asper.
I also found some success using Ink on him to shut down his stronger attack, but I am unsure if this is correlation or causation.
Drops the item " Mr. Noun's Language Arts: 63rd Edition" which buffs all stats for 10 turns.

Zebra
1% encounter found in the Serrageti
Super tanky, and the attack they have "Zebra Kick" does a stupid amount of damage.
Is earth type, so use a wind or water asper alongside elemental attacks to have an easier time.
I recommend using both aspers and spamming Windnado, which lowers enemy attack to keep his kick in check.
Drops the "Zebra Tail"
