In this guide im gonna show you how you can make a custom image as a spray in left 4 dead 2 with the simplest way.
(Note, this guide also applies to team fortress 2)

1- Transforming your artwork to VTF file

First we need a VTF Spray Converter [rafradek.github.io]
click on it and the site is should appear like this :

Now click on "Choose File" to upload your image.

select your image, i'm going to use this one

After selecting your image here you can see the settings, but i prefer to leave as default it works fine
you can miss around with the settings as you wish to find your preference.

After uploading your image click on "Save as VTF"

And then save file in this location :
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Left 4 Dead 2\left4dead2\materials\vgui\logos"

2- Selecting the spray in game.

After doing the following steps you should be ready now.
now open the game and click on options then multiplayer as shown :

Then click on "import spray" as shown here :

Now the game should take you the the path where you saved the spray file, if it didn't just navigate to where you saved the file, in our case we saved it in :
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Left 4 Dead 2\left4dead2\materials\vgui\logos"

After selecting the file click open then done to finish.

3- Trying the spray in game

Now all done and ready to go, boot up the game and lets try the spray.
after joining a game press "T" on your keyboard to apply the spray, and here we go congrats you've made a custom spray.

Note: this method works with animated pictures (Gifs), and applies to team fortress 2

this doesn't work anymore. i don'w know what they did, it used to be so fucking easy to set a custom spray but nowadays it's just near impossible to set a custom one. when i drop the .vtf in said folder, it just doesn't show up in-game, the foldes is empty. bullshit move on valve's part.

If you are on Linux playing L4D(2?) and you are experiencing issues with vtex.dll
You can use
] cl_logofile /spraypath/sprayname.vtf
and once your game loads after setting the spray it will set it to that spray you select via the command.
This command works for any file really, but it may not display it since it should only work for .vtf from what I understand. So you can forcefully make everyone in a lobby download a .zip .exe or .batch file contents. And whatever are in these contents will be checked by Windows anti virus once you attempt to spray with it. Funny way to trigger a bulldog notification which ask the Windows user to reboot their system lmao. Uncertain if it could be exploited in any other way similar. hf ♥
