it takes a LOT of wood and iron though, and you are absolutely gonna be using your rangers to kite the first waves around on large spike pits, but if you dont lose any of your starting units you can also qualify for best general as well.
1. Received a free ballista from a mayor and placed it on the map in "ranger revenge" - NO ACHIEVEMENT
2. Recruited a ranger when attempting "sniper slaughter", then killed (retired) her - NO ACHIEVEMENT
3. Bought a soldier in the Inn when attempting "sniper slaughter", then killed (retired) him - NO ACHIEVEMENT
Finally I got all of these achievements, but it took me a couple of tries.
I only had one shot at verifying those conditions (buying "illegals" in the Inn, receiving "illegal" reward), so it might be possible that you "break the rules" and still get the achievement, but I don't think it's worth checking.
Also: if in doubt if you can do something that might break the achievement collection, you can back up your save files before that. It goes like this: zip the "C:\Users\<user>\Documents\My Games\They Are Billions\Saves". If you unzip that zip file in place, you can "load" your saves. I know it's rather cheesy and not like the game designers intended it to be, but it might save you a lot of time when working on those achievements.
