"What is the most optimized way to get the "Actual Art Degree" thought?"
Well, let me give you a comprehensive answer to this *remarkable* question!

Here is a summary of what the guide has to offer:
  • Allows the thought to be internalized at the very start of Day 1, so that it is as profitable as possible throughout your playthrough.
  • Uses as few Conceptualization checks as possible, so that the XP gained after obtaining the thought is optimal.
  • Takes into account the stats necessary to obtain the thought, while trying its best not to limit the customization of your stats in the process.
  • Does not require any orb-clicking, so that it is compatible with, and optimized for, the "Jamais Vu (Derealization)" thought.

Shall we?
Starting Character Builds
  • Two choices are available to you:

    1. The 2 INT build:

      2 INT # PSY # FYS # MOT and Conceptualization as your signature skill (+1).

    2. The 3 INT build:

      3 INT # PSY # FYS # MOT and # as your signature skill.

  • Put simply: You need to start the game with at least 3 Conceptualization.
    You can set your PSY FYS and MOT stats as low/high as you would like.
    However, your INT stat shall not be less than 2 (and only if you also take Conceptualization as your signature skill for the +1 bonus), but it can still be set as high as you would like.

  • Both builds allow you to get the "Torque Dork" thought (which requires having 3 or less Encyclopedia when you start a new game).
    However, if going for the "Torque Dork" thought with the 3 INT build, do not choose Encyclopedia as your signature skill (because that will make you start the game with 4 Encyclopedia, thus locking you out of acquiring the thought).
Reál
  • You will have to buy the book named "The Man From Hjelmdall" for 9 Reál. To obtain this amount, simply follow the guide and you will find screenshots of containers that can be safely looted during each step. This will give you enough Reál to buy the book.

  • If you have 4 Interfacing, you can also steal 5 Reál from the sleeping worker, which is not required for the guide. Doing so will, however, let you loot only the best containers (and skip the worst ones).

  • Likewise, if you have some Perception, more containers will be spotted along the way. There is one in particular (in the apartements) which is highly rewarding.
Jamais Vu (Derealization)
  • This guide is totally compatible with the "Jamais Vu (Derealization)" thought, as you will be asked only once to click an orb (in order to obtain the keys at the very start of the game). What this means is that you will be able to keep all other orbs for later, when the thought is internalized and ready to give free XP.
0. Starting Character Build Used, aka S.C.B.U.
  • This is the build I used:

    2 INT 1 PSY 1 FYS 1 MOT and Conceptualization as the signature skill (+1).

    I wanted to test if a build using the LOWEST possible starting stats could still succeed the speedrun, and it can.

    Again, as long as you start the game with at least 3 Conceptualization, then you'll be able to complete the speedrun.

    It also means that depending on your starting character build, some things will be easier than in the guide, such as passing checks (like Suggestion, Interfacing or Perception) and/or finding more money.

  • Enter the Pawnshop. Talk to Roy. Select any first dialogue option, then select: "Honestly, I think some of your selections are... more tasteful than others." (gives +1 art point). Exit the Pawnshop.

  • You need to have 9 Reál to be able to buy the book. If that's not the case yet, please refer to the various loot screenshots available throughout the guide.

  • Enter the Bookstore. Interact with the left shelf. Select "Storekeep, tell me about the muscleman books."

  • Select any dialogue option, then select "Sounds good. Which one should I start with?"

  • You need to have 5 Conceptualization before you go to the next step. If that's not the case yet, you either failed to invest enough points into it, or you haven't equiped both +1 items available to you.

  • A blue hovering orb has now appeared. Click on it to open the "Actual Art Degree" thought dialogue.

  • Don't discard the thought or you will be locked out of it. Select any dialogue options until you can select "Okay. If 50% art critic is what's needed to free me from rote repetition, so be it. (Opt in.)"

  • The "Actual Art Degree" thought has finally been unlocked and may now be internalized.
    Start researching it, then open the book "Hjelmdallermann: the Man from Hjelmdall".

  • Now, don't simply select any dialogue option available to you, as this will lock the book from further reading. Instead, select a specific sequence of dialogue options so that the book can be read over and over again:

    1. Select "Read the first couple of pages."
    2. Select "I'm too old for this..."
    3. Select "I've read enough. (Close the book.)"

  • Repeat steps 1-2-3 until the thought is internalized.
