That's a very nice workaround. This way some controllers will not work and you might have to use the keyboard. In my case it's a PS5 controller which drove me crazy, but found a way to incorporate the PS5 controller and also got rid of the acceleration and steering problems. Therefore you have to activate the Steam input and then unmap all bindings in-game for steering wheel and keyboard. One binding each has to be left. For the steering wheel choose the same button as the controller for accelaration and for the keyboard leave it on 'w'. Now everything works as intented.
