This is a guide on playing Sonic Adventure on the Steam Deck and installing the Dreamcast Conversion Mod.
As of today, the developers behind the Dreamcast Conversion Mod did not provide a Linux-native installer yet.

Installing the files
  1. Install Sonic Adventure DX from the Steam Store;

  2. On your Deck, go into Desktop mode;

  3. Run Discover from the start menu, search for "Protontricks", and install it;

  4. Download the Dreamcast Conversion Mod installer from the developer website[sadxmodinstaller.unreliable.network];


  5. Extract the downloaded archive;


  6. Right click on the extracted `sadx_setup.exe`, press “Open with Protontricks Launcher”, then select Sonic Adventure DX from the list and press "OK";


  7. Start the installer and progress normally. When asked for the destination folder, input the directory where SADX is installed. By default this usually is
    Z:\home\deck\.steam\steam\steamapps\common\Sonic Adventure DX\
    Alternatively, you can verify your installation directory by selecting “Sonic Adventure DX”>“Properties...”>“Installed Files”>“Browse...” in your Steam library;
Configuring
  1. Start SADX and select “Configure Sonic Adventure DX”, then press on mods. This will launch the SADX Mod Loader;

  2. The SADX Mod Loader might ask you to install the .NET Desktop Runtime and take you to the website where you can download it. Once downloaded all you need to do to install it is right click on the downloaded .NET runtime installer, press “Open with Protontricks Launcher”, then select Sonic Adventure DX from the list and press "OK";


  3. In the SADX Mod Loader go to the Graphics tab and set “FMV Fill Mode” to “Fit”, then save.



  4. (Optional) In the Mods tab in the SADX Mod Loader enable “Steam Achievements Mod”.

  5. Right click SADX in your library and press “Properties...” in the textbox under LAUNCH OPTIONS insert this
    WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d8=n,b" %command%

I consistently get an error about installing .Net 8 Desktop Runtime even after installing it. Any help?

I’m getting a pop up that says “SADX lantern Engine will not function without d3d8to9 saved to your Sonic Adventure DX folder.
Download d3d8.dll from from https://github.com/ crosire/d3d8to9” and it’s not letting me play the game. I downloaded the file and I’m unsure where to put it in order for the game to work.

An update to the SADX Mod Loader had broken this guide, so I went and updated the guide.

@essayharper - as long as the game list shows up, you can ignore the error. I’m no expert in protontrick but found this guide on how to use it.

protontricks just gives me an error,installed through flathub
